We enjoyed a wonderful eight nights at this lovely small bed and breakfast in a beautifully renovated old farmhouse on the outskirts of the village of Gais, with views across the Appenzell to the Alpstein mountains.
Originally operated as a restaurant, the owners have recently converted their farmhouse to a bed and breakfast with just seven lovely rooms, demolishing the adjoining barn and building a well designed block of private apartments. Everything is immaculate and the original old Stubli is retained for guests to enjoy their breakfasts (with Vreni's delicious Bircher Muesli and local cheese) and also serves as a place to relax over a drink from the honour bar.
The owners, Vreni and Heinz, are a charming couple who made us feel extremely welcome and worked hard to converse with us in English. We stayed in the Stobete suite, a huge first floor room with traditional wood panelled walls and ceiling and simple, modern granite lined washroom, toilet and shower. There is another slightly smaller suite, plus five rooms - the only two with balconies being in the section linking the farmhouse to the private apartments.
The Appenzell is a very attractive area to explore with a wonderfully frequent and efficient public transport system of trains and buses. Virtually every town and village is reachable by local electric train services which connect with St Gallen, so a car is not essential. Since we were staying longer than 2 nights, on arrival our hosts presented us each with an Appenzell Gold Card. This entitled us to free use of public transport throughout the region, free journeys on three local cable cars, free entry to a number of museums, swimming pools and even electrical bicycle rental! This was a great gift, particularly since the cable cars can be quite expensive. One day, we even travelled by train all the way to the German border town of Konstanz on the Bodensee and back using our passes.
Vreni and Heinz suggested a number of good mountain restaurants and we would particularly recommend a trip by cable car up to Ebenalp and then a fifteen minute walk that passes through a huge prehistoric cave to the Wildkirchli (cave church) and Aescher Inn, precipitously perched on a ledge half way down a sheer cliff face. Fantastic!
We loved every moment of our holiday here, from watching Vreni feed her horse and pony, goats and ducks from our windows each evening, to the easy walks available from right outside our door. There was a little low level noise in the early morning from milk tankers delivering to the small cheese maker located adjacent to the Baren, but we happily accepted this a part of life in a real working village. Can't wait to return.

Perfectly located this small family hotel was our home for the past 5 days. the room was perfect - we had everything we needed and more, the breakfast was great and the host was super friendly and tremendously helpful. the atmosphere in the place was more of a home than of an hotel. with just short drives to all nearby attractions we were enchanted by the snow covered meadows and the surroundings that offered tranquility and charm.
A great place to spend your winter vacation.

We booked this last minute stay just the night before and stayed one one night but we highly recommend it. The town is just minutes out of Appenzell. The B&B is on the edge of the town of Gais so surrounded by meadows with horses and cows. I have to say we got the last, and smallest, room but that was OK for us and our short stay as it still was cute, spotless, had a big modern bathroom and was quiet. I'd definitely as for a room with a terrace area or situated upstairs if possible for a more comfortable, bigger area. The owner was very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was great.

The owner of this establishment, Vreni, cancelled my 4 August, 2020 three room reservation 6 days before our stay, without my knowledge. The reservation was made in January 2020. It was for a family trip to celebrate two 50 year, and one 80 year birthday. When I made the reservation, I did receive the emails for each of the rooms, including reservation confirmation numbers. So I knew the reservation was valid. I still have those emails.
Fortunately, I called the night before the stay, to request a room upgrade on one of the reservations. That is when I found out about the cancellation. At that point, the three rooms were already re-booked. Vreni told me that she had send an email 6 days before our stay, supposedly asking to confirm the reservation. I did not receive the email. I asked them to re-send that email, for me to see why I had not received it, and to validate what I was told by Vreni. As of today, I still don’t have that email. They also have my cell phone number, but have failed to ever call me, to notify me of the cancellation, nor have they followed up with me on anything since.
They did end up coordinating with a different hotel in Gais, at a cheaper rate. That hotel is substandard, so I declined. Vreni stated that there was nothing else they could do.
I am not sure why Vreni was not able to make contact with me before she cancelled my reservation, and how she would cancel my reservation without hearing from me personally. I am still waiting on any sort of follow up.
Luckily, I was able to book three rooms at a different hotel, last minute, the night before the stay.

As far as the email issue, I have been in email contact with an Appenzell Restaurant and a local Taxi service, since January, and have not missed a single email from the two businesses. Those plans came through. I have also been sending emails back and forth with the new Hotel (Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten) that I had to book rooms with last minute. No issues!!

Well, because of the issue described above, I ended up finding a Gem, the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten:
I highly recommend this Hotel, and I am now glad that the above described incident happened, otherwise I would have missed out on the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten. The Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten accommodated everything I needed, again, last minute. It was around 22:30/10:30PM at night when I called there, the night before my stay. They let me check in early the day of the stay, all rooms were on the same floor, the rooms had the traditional Appenzeller wooden look, everything was very clean, and newly remodeled. All staff was very friendly. They even welcomed us with an arrival reception, drinks and a local snack. At check out, Hotel management came down to thank us personally for the stay. On future visits to the Appenzell region, it will be at the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten.

Excellent place with outstanding facilities, clean, comfortable, modern yet in a traditional environment.

The room was flawless and cosy with a nice view on the lovely nature outside. The lightning system created such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Very comfortable bed and spacious shower cabine. Breakfast was very complete with fresh products and very diverse.

The owners are genuinely welcoming and service- minded, always available to help with a smile, they make sure you can enjoy not only the house but also the amazing natural environment in the surroundings.

If you are in doubt, don’t hesitate, this place will give you the perfect choice. Definitely to return.

Ok I’m
A hotel snob. I need nice sheets and most importantly cleanliness! I was recommended to this lovely guest house when I went for my “ Swiss tune up” at the Alpstein Clinic in Gais. This is a beautiful part of the Swiss Alps. I was not expecting much but I was so thrilled when I arrived at this lovely location . It sits next to a beautiful stream and meadow with cows and horse near by. The rooms are all wood with large windows. You sink into the fresh sheets and down comforters at bedtime. The bathroom is all beautiful stone with an infinity drain and nice shampoo and lotion. They even put a local Appenzell cake in your room each evening.
Breakfast is a spread of fresh fruits, granola wonderful baked goods and they will make you eggs! The owner Matthias is warm friendly and a great host. He lent me his bicycle so I wouldn’t have to walk to the clinic each day. It’s a 5 minute walk to a lovely town and 30 min train ride to St Gallen and 20 mins to Appenzell. Both great towns. Zurich is an hour away on the train. Lastly this place is really moderately
priced! You will love it.More

We really enjoyed our short stay here. The BnB was spotless and well appointed. Every detail in our room and bathroom was excellent. Beautifully decorated too! Our view of the country farm was very quite and pleasing. Matthias was a superb host and gave us suggestions for lunch in the area.
We went to Ebenalp. It was a short distance from the Inn. Appenzell is nearby also.
I totally recommend this BnB.

We only had time to stay for one night but having had a look around and seeing the incredible hikes we will return sometime for longer. The Guesthouse itself is absolutely immaculate. The welcome was honest and helpful (and with no fuss, you are in your room in a flash which is what we all love), the room gorgeous, beautiful interior and exterior, spotlessly clean, the breakfast was utterly delicious. The bread! Oh how I love great bread and this was some of the best I've had anywhere. The bircher muesli was made that morning and a complete delight. Along with abundant fresh berries, cheeses, preserves. Everything was of fine quality.
Gais is pretty and the countryside of the Appenzell spectacular. If you are looking at booking check out their own website. You can see every room in 360degrees up down around, inside each bathroom and you can go outside each room. So you really do know what you are getting and which room to select that is best for you. It is one of the best websites I've come across in decades of travel. Additionally, I can say the place is even prettier than any pictures I saw. It really is a beautiful, discreet, understated, relaxing place. It also happens to lie in some of the most picturesque countryside imaginable. Faultless.

We arrived during an unusually early snowfall, which we aren't used to, and were so warmly greeted and welcomed that we were immediately at ease and relaxed after a long drive from Germany. The owners were more than accommodating, in less than 1/2 hour we were settled in our beautiful, clean and cozy rooms with reservations for dinner and transportation through the snow. Their recommendation was wonderful and so appreciated. We woke the next morning, very rested, to the gorgeous Swiss countryside and snow covered fields, like a Christmas card. Breakfast was phenomenal, everything you could want and the highest quality, served by Vreni Willi, owner and chef. She and her husband truly went out of their way to be kind and accommodating and we cannot wait to return for another visit.

I am sure that there would be trains and busses to the town of Gais. However, I only ever use public transport in major cities, all other places I hire a car. Therefore, I have not used public transport in this area.
