Family of 4 visit to Herdwick Farm Lodges in August 2023. On arrival we were greeted by a lady who kindly directed us to our lodge by the riverside. The lodge itself was of a high standard and had all the amenities you’d need for a midweek break. The site is lovely, quiet, clean and well maintained. The restaurant serves beautiful pizzas and a few other dishes, having said that it was closed for 2 days out of the 4 we were there. 😬 The frustration for us as a family was the lad from maintenance who was pretty rude with our family about the hot tub, we used it for 2 hours on arrival and it was a strange colour and smelt the following morning, when carrying out his checks he said we’d probably not washed and was an issue with hygiene!! How rude……… We’ve been to lots of holiday lodges with hot tubs and never had any issues but did at this park, the holiday was as nice and we had a lovely time in the lakes but wouldn’t return to this park.

Lovely located site right by Bassenthwaite Lake. Our party was about 14 of us. Met by Dave, who was brilliant from initial booking, contact throughout and meeting us when we arrived. Yes, the SITE is dog friendly but NOT the Bistro, which has put some of our group off as they couldn't leave their dogs so this forced us to go elsewhere. This has put us off re booking. Toilet block, 2 toilets, 2 showers, 2 sinks, plug sockets, heater. This was quite a walk as we were in the top field.

We booked this site for a 3 night break in mid September in our camper van. We had to pay the overly priced pitch fee up front of arrival . The site looked appealing and seemed to offer good facilities. A poor choice …as the dilapidated toilet and shower block situated a 5 minute walk from the pitch was something out of the 1970 s . There were 2 poorly lit toilet cubicles and 2 shower cubicles. It needs demolishing and rebuilding to be fit for purpose for campers and camper vans campers . Seems to be geared up to the static caravan users. Furthermore Herdwick Willy s bar and bistro which features heavily in the website was not open on a Wednesday or Thursday .- no mention of that when booking . There was no one at reception to greet us just an email with pitch details . We have since e mailed the site and to date have had no response.

Great Monday to Friday stay in one of the luxury lodges with a hot tub. The lodges are well equipped and very clean as was the hot- tub. Great base for exploring the local area and with Bassenthwaite Lake on tge doorstep it is ideal if you like paddleboarding or other water sports. This is our second time here and will nit be our last.

Another fab camping stay! We love this site as it’s so close to the lake and whinlatter. Really dog friendly and great facilities. Really love the added new bistro we had a lovely evening last night. If a few play things for The kids could be added like a swing and slide this site would be amazing

We stayed over a long weekend for our anniversary, in the large pod onsite. It has a hot tub inside an outer area, inside has an open plan kitchen/lounge area with a breakfast island, through to the double bed room and en-suite bathroom/shower. It has really nice matching decor throughout, with curved wooden sides. You get towels provided, hairdryer, the ironing board is a mini one which goes either on a table or the bed or dressing table? Small hanging area for clothes, dressing table with drawers and storage. The kitchen has a cooker, fridge, wine chiller, dishwasher, utensils and plenty of baking equipment (🤷🏼‍♂️). There’s a kettle, toaster as well. There’s a tv and a small sofa for two people. There are skylights around you can open to air the place. Outside the big glass doors there’s a seating area with two low down chairs then of course the hot tub. Further outside is a slate path that leads down to a bench in front of a fire pit. All in all it’s a lovely place to stay short term. HOWEVER, I have gripes which I feel would provide a better experience, and also some things which desperately need addressing… My major one is that there are no blinds or curtains on the windows where the hot tub is, and also none on the glass to the lounge/kitchen area! This meant there was no privacy due to the house at the back over looking it, during the day seemed ok as the people were probably out walking, however during the evening we found on each night people were staring over at us!! Also, the maintenance lad comes round in the mornings to check on the hot tub, so with no blinds on the windows, there’s no privacy there either. I did mention this when we were being given the keys, and she said they were going to address the issue, but it should have been dealt with when the place was built! Now I understand it’s self catering, but theres also no welcome basket of food to start you off, it doesn’t have to be much, fruit, local biscuits, tea/coffee/sugar, but there’s literally nothing at all, not even a pint of milk in the fridge. I’ve been places before where people have left tin foil or clingfilm in the drawers, nothing here. So you must make sure you take everything you’re going to need for your stay, including foil or clingfilm, not forgetting if you’re going hiking as well. There’s also no surface cleaner, so you have to just wipe surfaces with the cloth and water. There’s no soap in the bathroom/shower, again I would have thought a small soap or shower gel to start you off. Theres no shelf in the shower to put toiletries or soap once you get some. There’s a radiator in the bathroom you can hang towels on, but it’s not enough, it could do with being longer really, maybe twice the size. You can’t have the shower on full because the water doesn’t drain away quick enough and fills the bottom up quickly then starts to overflow round the bathroom floor! We were also getting a smell of cat urine in the bathroom, and/or bedroom, perhaps outside that window is a spot where the local cat marks it’s territory? Also bear in mind most people will go hiking, a better clothes maiden or some thought into other places to hang clothes, perhaps also to dry out boots in the outer area? (We stayed at a place in Scotland to go up Ben Nevis and found it frustrating to not be able to dry stuff out properly.) I’d still recommend this as a good base to stay for access to nearby walks, but the above issues need addressing and missing nice touches adding to make it 100%.

When we arrived we called the number as requested to do so, on a text message we’d received that morning. We were directed to our lodge and asked to wait there. Within a couple of minutes and friendly gentleman arrived with the key and told us to settle in and someone would be along to collect the security deposit. A few minutes later a lady arrived and took the deposit and told us about the area and check out procedures. The lodge itself (Buttermere) was clean and spacious for what we needed. Having done these sort of stays before I was surprised there was no soap in the bathrooms. Luckily we had some mini shower gels we could use. A long handled dustpan and brush would have been useful to clear up in the doorway, but apart from that it had everything we needed. The location of the park is fantastic, the best location we have stayed in all of our Lakes trips. The site has the bonus of the on site Bistro, which serves great food and drink and is reasonably priced when you look at prices of any pub in the LD. We had a great stay and would definitely return.

Visited Herdwick Croft for 1 night during a camping trip. Stayed in a non-electric pitch in our campervan paying £20 per night. On arrival spoke to the extremely friendly warden, Dave, who allocated our pitch. Pitches were spacious and flat. The site has mostly static caravans but has a couple of lovely fields for tents and tourers. Facilities were average, toilets, sinks and showers by the entrance to the site - no issues noted (as stated in some of the previous reviews the facility block may be further away for some of the campers in the far, top field, but as we were in the lower field we didnt find this an issue). Toilet block also had a couple of plug sockets available which is always helpful for people using hairdryers etc. There was also a small utility room for dishwashing, washing machine/dryer / ironing etc. We chose this site mainly for its lovely location right on Lake Bassenwaite, close to Keswick and in walking distance of the Lakes Distillery. It also has a lovely bistro on site which does a range of drinks and delicious pizzas! Would recommend.

We stayed in the large pod on this site which had a double bed and a dressing table as well storage for your clothes. This pod has also has a toilet, sink, and walk in shower and they also provided towels. The kitchen was quite big and had a complicated oven/microwave and electric hob, kettle and toaster. This pod also has a large fridge and a wine cooler fridge. The hot tub was nice and hot with excellent jets on it. I could not really fault the pod really it had its own garden area too. Infact my only concern was on the inside doors there were no curtains or blinds which ment you had NO privacy due to the cottage facing the pod and they could see us in the sitting room area and also getting in and out of the hot tub. I would maybe recommend some sort of reflective glass so you can still see out but no one can see you in hot tub and also curtains or blinds on inside doors to give your customers privacy. We had guests at the cottage staring at us when we were in the pod and felt uneasy. The site itself was really nice and in a lovely area and was clean and well kept. But the bar was only open certain days and only open till 6.30pm. The site is near lake bassenthwaite unfortunately we did not find any walking routes close to the lake but you can take a canoe or kayak onto the lake.

Visited this caravan site as it ststed it was dog friendly. The onsite bar/bistro did supply water for our dog but they do not allow them inside. There is a very small dog walk area but nothing else. I could hardly find any dog waste bins. The site itself was just ok, no reception so struggled to find anyone to assist in finding my poorly marked pitch. The toilet / shower block is not close to any of the touring pitches and is in need of refurbishment.the owners need to address this if they want to continue charging the current nightly rate.
