A one night away special treat for two and dog. Reception were very friendly, the whole set up was covid secure, the room was comfortable and clean. The TV in the bathroom didn’t tune in properly but to be honest I wasn’t expecting one and don’t particularly care! What was more important was the staff were really helpful when I needed a hose and outside tap to clean the dog off. A nice surprise when entering the room was a dog bowl, poo bags and dog biscuits.

We used the spa and had a massage which was absolutely brilliant, the facilities were in full working order and left nothing to be desired. The massage was just what was needed.

In the evening sadly the dog had to stay in the room for an hour for a nap while we went to the bar for a relatively reasonably priced cocktail served by friendly and attentive staff. The meal was great I had lamb with gnocchi perfectly cooked, my wife went for the veggie option of field mushrooms. Pudding was fruit crumble and sticky toffee pudding.

Monday morning started with a full breakfast big enough to feed me and keep me full for the day. We a were directed to a table but preferred another that was not made up, not a problem one minute and it was set.

In summary not inexpensive but a taste of quality. Great facilities, friendly helpful staff and wonderful food. Dog friendly with some understandable restrictions about where and when the dog can go but all very fair. Will be happy to return another day. Great place, beautiful location, lovely food, attentive staff what more do you need?

Visited for Sunday lunch with the better half. The 3x course Sunday lunch was beautiful and absolutely superb. Would definately recommend a visit. There's hand sanitizer at the door of each room and staff wear masks. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and aware of restrictions.

One nights stay (£165) including two 25 minute upper body massages (£90) and a poor meal, including two courses each and a bottle of wine (£70)

The place itself is lovely building initially built in the 1500s with later renovations being made to a poorer quality.

The hotel itself and it's facilities are ultimately outdated, the taps wouldn't run cold and there aren't even any fridges in the room if you want to drink cold water.

The brasserie restaurant was average AT BEST, we did not try the more expensive restaurant however we should have, the menu at the brasserie seemed to use quality ingredients but it was poorly executed? and too expensive for what it was.

The breakfast held in the nicer restaurant was very nice with great staff.

The "spa" itself offers really only one thing of value, the outdoor jacuzzi, which, to be honest wasn't as hot as it should have been, a redemption of this was that you could push an intercom and get drinks delivered. The massages are expensive and there didn't seem to be a steam room or indoor jacuzzi?

A trip that wasn't so disappointing because of , the good company, breakfast and building with a high price point. If you can get the stay on a offer this would be a good night away.

£250 all in would have been a more acceptable price point.

First visited this wonderful hotel in 2011 with my then new boyfriend as our first trip away as a couple. We have just returned from our stay with our 4 year old daughter as a wedding anniversary celebration.

We had club room 168 which was lovely, clean, well decorated and the bed was extremely comfortable. With 3 of us in the room it didn’t feel too small for us at all.

We booked the spa access for 90 mins (£20 each for adults and £10 for children) and this was thoroughly enjoyed, the spa was incredibly clean and social distancing was observed throughout. I felt despite the time limitation this represented good value for money. The outdoor hot tub is just incredible.

Dinner and breakfast were both first rate. A special mention must go to Vassi (apologies for misspelling) who cooed over our baby girl at dinner and made her day. We didn’t catch the names of the other staff but all the servers at dinner and breakfast were incredible attentive, polite and really friendly despite not being able to see their full faces!

The next morning we enjoyed a picturesque walk around the grounds and to the lake. The scenery is amazing.

We will definitely return, maybe without a child next time :)

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

This is the fifth time I have stayed at the the hotel. I booked last minute as a surprise birthday treat for my husband. As it was a Sunday and the hotel would be quiet this time of year ( on line promotional offers confirm this) I contacted the hotel prior to arrival asking for a nice room and a possible complimentary upgrade as a returning customer.
On check in I was informed that I could upgrade to a better room for £25.00 I declined thinking that on my previous visits the rooms had all been of a good standard.
We were given room 142 on the ground floor. The doors leading to the gravel patio would not open and I had to search for house keeping staff to come and assist, he even struggled to open the door without using a lot of force. The latch on the window was also badly worn and appeared insecure to me and a possible security issue.
The shower door was also jammed and again I had to seek assistance to work this out without breaking it. There was a plastic piece of the shower casing hanging loose from the unit, it was all rather shabby and poor.
The room was very noisy due to the intergrated fridge and neither my husband or I slept well.
As it was my husbands birthday I requested a table by the window in the Lake restaurant and I was slightly taken back when we were placed by the wall next to the partition which was cold with a draft....I did not make a fuss as the restaurant was busy and I did't want to make a scene with it being my husbands birthday.
On a positive note the food we experienced on this occasion was excellent, the food was obviously cooked by someone who knows what they are doing, the lamb loin was exceptional.
Breakfast the following day was also of a very high standard,I enjoyed the avocado on sough dough bread, thank you chef.
On check out once my husband was not around I shared my observations on both the very poor quality of the room and the fabulous food.
The lady on the desk explained that the hotel was doing some refurbishments on the rooms and that the room I stayed in was due to be upgraded.
Imagine my disappointment to hear that, as I returning customer I would off expected some better customer service as a returning customer.
We travelled a long way and paid a lot of money for a sub standard room.
Very sad as I always promote this hotel to family and friends.
Would like to return but not sure I would take the risk.
Regards

We feel relaxed as soon as we go up the drive. The Hotel and Spa are of good quality with a hard working team. The Spa has a fabulous huge hot tub outside with views of the grounds as well as a pool and steam/sauna and a beauty, wellness and massage floor above. The Hotel has a fantastic Lake View restaurant. I am a fussy eater but everything they serve is great.
Its not an over fussy hotel so staff dont rush to carry your bags etc but they all care and want you to have a great time. The hotel is going through constant refurbs. Last year the Cocktail Bar and Lounge was done up to a very high stanard. This year the main lounge where afternoon tea is served has been done up.
Covid was being well handled and we felt safe. It meant that a few of the nicer things had gone. The spa had limited access to 2 hours so they can clean and the super comfy cushions on the loungers had been put away. We missed two of the courses in the Restaurant also.

This is an impressive looking building and lovely grounds but the rooms are a bit dated and when you look closely, run down. The heating is on a centrally controller timer so too bad if you in your room when it has been centrally switched off. For grown ups this is quite something and in February doesn’t make for the most pleasant of stays.

The temperature in thermal pool in the spa was tepid both days and the treatments only adequate. My therapist coughed throughout the massage and the ‘shape and paint’ manicure didn’t shape and the paint is patchy. I had the strong feeling the therapist was on a timer so even if the nails weren’t done in time, too bad cos time was up. It looks like it should be so much better, nice decor, friendly therapists but what really counts is the quality and that’s middle grade.

We visited to celebrate an anniversary and paid a little extra for a room with a view over the lake and the room, 130, was fabulous.

The public rooms have a mix of modern and classic, with a roaring open fire in the lounge.

Although the grounds were quite wet, there were nice walks in the woods.

So what could possibly spoil this lovely place, well the menu actually! We had booked dinner B&B for two nights. What we were not told on booking, or arrival is that the menu would be exactly the same on both nights; our anniversary was on the second day. When we complained to the duty manger, Simon, he did apologise that we hadn't been told but said they only change the menu every three months. We also pointed out that on the second night the dining room was cold.

So would I go back, yes I think so but for B&B.

This is a magnificent building overlooking Lake Bassenthwaite in wonderful grounds. I stayed before with my family some years ago at Christmas and was looking forward to coming back. The front of house staff worked hard to please and the dining room staff and spa team were all very good. However I think Covid, and Brexit may have contributed to staff shortages or maybe cut backs. This was an expensive stay and you could see where corners were cut. Firstly one does not expect nouvelle cuisine to fill a plate but you needed a microscope to spot some items. For sexample, baked beans at breakfast are served in a tiny pot on the plate. Why not save money on the pot and the washing up and offer more than a soup spoon full of beans? In the bedroom we had to ask a cleaner to come in and polish the wardrobes both inside and out which had a layer of dust on them . Seems like the manager does not run his/her finger and a beady eye around the bedrooms to check on throroughness. The drapes were dusty too and could jave doine with a good vacuuming. The room was pretty dingy and had a musty smell. We had room 122 which was up 57 stairs . We went to the lakes to do some fell walking but usually came back pretty tired and had to find the energy to get up to the room which was on the second floor. The windows and door onto the balcony rattled in the night breeze. Again a sign of putting off anything that is not urgent. Can't really blame the staff as they all tried so very hard but guessing that corners are being cut to reduce cost. Interesting that we were recently in Liverpool a tough city with high unemployment and apparently economically depressed. We found the best hotels and restaurants full and were even turned away by some. The best run places are making it work even in difficult times.

The hotel is in a great location for a relaxing stay at the Northern end of the Lake District. The lake view from the terrace and the restaurant is very tranquil - you pay extra for a lake view room, which we considered good value.

Our room was large and well-furnished, although the decor was rather old fashioned. The bathroom was excellent. We visited the Spa most days, which has a good pool, jacuzzis, sauna and steam rooms. The restaurant food is excellent - wide selection of breakfast dishes, cooked to order, interesting menus for dinner.

The restaurant and cleaning staff are very friendly and helpful.

There are a variety of deals and offers. The 5 day stay for the cost of 4 days is a good discount.

Nevertheless, some things can be improved. There is no information about the history of the hotel, no maps, no advice about local walks, nothing about the easiest route to the lake. A coffee making machine in the room would have been appreciated. A 13.5 tog duvet in the summer is crazy and we moved it to the wardrobe! The main staircase looks tired and needs more hoovering.

The hotel was used every day for weddings and wedding guests booked many of the rooms. These guests had a good time and sometimes went to bed noisily in the middle of the night! They also tended to ignore the request to wear masks indoors.

You would be best to ring the hotel when they re-open. We have stayed there several times now but don’t know the answer. We know they have ground floor rooms opening onto the gardens but we do not know if they offer full disabled facilities. There is a lift serving some upstairs rooms.
