Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'm writing this following a second visit to the Pheasant Inn, the previous being just a few weeks ago. On our first outing, we had a gift voucher, which included a generous amount towards food plus a bottle of wine. The meal went down a treat, and the service was great. Deciding to return soon after, this time with my girlfriend's mother, we again enjoyed some nice food and pleasant service. What was slightly less enjoyable was the bill at the end, which stung pretty hard without the benefit of a voucher. I'm not stingy and am pretty happy to pay for good food, but their prices are stretched to the limit. For example, I had the 'Glazed Pigs in Blankets' starter, which turned out to be two moderately sized sausages wrapped in wafer-thin bacon glazed with what seemed to be cranberry sauce (not sure what happened to the Dijon mustard). It tasted fine but for £7 I couldn't help but feel a bit ripped off. You'd get a whole meal and a drink for that in Wetherspoons! (No, I'm not trying to compare the quality of their food to Spoons, but you get where I'm coming from). The main courses weren't quite as bad: £18 for fish and chips is pricey but it was a decent-sized piece of fish. However, I've paid £13-14 for similar elsewhere, which soon adds up. Our bill totalled just over £100 for three two-course meals and three alcoholic drinks. Some might say that's reasonable in the current economic climate, but I'm just not sure the quality and quantity quite merit it, and it has put me off going back. I suspect they've got something of a captive market with their overnight guests as there's not much else nearby.

In a single sentence, excellent, but my goodness the staff are flat out! I’ve known The Pheasant since around 1970 and the refurbishment carried out by The Inn Collection is to be commended, it’s good and the traditional bar remains unchanged, retaining all its aged character, with one omission which I will cover later. My wife and I stayed for two nights and our room - indeed the whole Inn - was spotless. The staff are to be commended for their diligence and attention to detail. Supper on both nights was very good, our choices included gambas prawns, beet starter, Cumberland sausage, pheasant, pie of the week and venison. All very good. Take a bow kitchen staff! We were looked after by front of house team members including Alison, Michelle, Enya, Richard and Bryn. If their pay was based on friendly, professional service and customer focus they would be very wealthy folk indeed. Thank you all and jolly well done! All of you were constantly working absolutely flat out and your commitment is recognised and appreciated. Thank you. Now then Sean, not only do you have some folk to recognise and thank, but from a customer view point you also have one more important task. The most iconic room in the inn, (and possibly the one which generates a sizeable income) is the John Peel bar. Without a bar tender it is little more than a room with chairs and tables in it, having enough staff to place someone behind the bar would transform the room and the whole Inn. Get recruiting………..

Can’t fault it, lovely place to stay, staff fabulous. Clean, comfortable and warm in the middle of a November storm. Just would have liked more vegetarian options for breakfast and main meals. Cauliflower curry with rice as a main meal didn’t cut it for me but that’s purely a personal opinion. Vegetarian Sunday lunch was fabulous!

We had a really relaxing stay (3 nights) The staff were friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble. The one issue we had was dealt with straight away to our satisfaction. Lovely breakfasts clean comfortable room. Very dog friendly we have a big dog but this was not an issue. Only negative the evening menu is quite limited especially when you eat in more than once. Would recommend it especially to those of you with dogs

The hotel is very old and traditional but has been modernised sympathetically with its character. We had a beautiful room and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The food was great and very reasonably priced. The drink was good, too but a little more pricey. The deal we got - a winter one night break, with £26 pp dinner allowance and b and b was great value, at £99, especially as we got a free pass to use the spa at Armathwaite Hall, which was a wonderful expereince.

Called in for fish and chips Friday night, I had pre booked earlier in the day and everything was fine, the food was average nothing to write home about which at £18 was a bit of a let down , having said that I did eat the lot, good pint of ale , overall I liked the place and would return , I make my comparison with the pub we use every Friday night at home , same drinks and food costs £46 at the Pheasant £66 , 20 quid more for a lower quality dish.

We stayed for 1 night and really enjoyed it, had a lovely spacious room, comfy and all the bits and bobs you'd expect/need. Very clean, lots of staff who were mostly very attentive. We ate dinner, we did have to send a Burger back as it was burnt but it was replaced really quickly. Lovely location and nice garden, we saw a red squirrel before breakfast which was fab!
