Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This review is for food only - we didn't stay at the hotel. Visited The Board Inn while on holiday nearby and really enjoyed both of our visits for meals. The welcome from Alistair, Karen and all their staff was wonderful. The food on both evenings (barbecue on Saturday and pizza on Friday) was super, freshly cooked to order and great value.

We booked in here for an early evening meal before an event at the Moors National Park Centre in Danby. The pub was cosy and welcoming. I was told at the time of booking that it would only be pizza on offer, which suited us. There was a list of about ten toppings and we could choose any combination of three for a fixed price. Our pizzas arrived promptly and were obviously freshly made. We all agreed they were delicious but, with the cheesy garlic bread we ordered as well, it was more than we could manage. No problem, the friendly lady behind the bar (really should have asked her name!) was only too happy to box up the leftovers which warmed up beautifully for lunch the next day. If you're in the area, I heartily recommend dropping in.

One of the best Sunday Roasts we've had in a long time. There was a good choice of meats to chose from off the menu and it came with a large yorkie, separate delicious fresh veg and proper meaty gravy. The lamb was fabulous and plenty of it but the goat was something else. Never had roast goat before and was very impressed with the information from where all animal and produce were from locally.

Good service, friendly staff and reasonable prices. Would highly recommend you book yourself a table!

We booked our stay a few months ago & requested that we have use of both of the hot tubs, for which the payment is separate. When we arrived we were told that neither hot tub was working. We were initially told it was the previous occupants that had broken them both, however on the day we left a different member of staff told us they had been very temperamental & 1 hadn’t been working properly for some time. We enquired if there was any chance of even 1 being repaired before we left & we were just given a shrug & told there were no engineers available. We understood that things do happen but a little notice would have been appreciated, we could have packed accordingly, leaving out bulky towels & bathrobes & putting in extra games, dvds etc.
The lay out of the property is unusual but there was plenty of space & character. The living room had loads of seating & was very comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped, had its own bar & a high table that was perfect to eat & play games at all together. The cleanliness downstairs left something to be desired. all the window sills had dead flies on them & there was cobwebs in all the corners of the rooms & especially on the candelabras. In an attempt to make the rooms more homely with ornaments & accessories they had managed to make it much more difficult to clean & that showed!!
On the decking the view was lovely & there was a table & several chairs however there was also evidence of rats with droppings on the bannister rails, this is to be expected when you’re that close to the river but a little disconcerting none the less.
Upstairs the bedrooms were comfortable with plenty of room & storage, but the bathrooms were unusual sizes & shapes. The taller guests in our party had several bumps to the head because of it. The fact that the entrance to the pub was the same as the entrance to the bedrooms & kitchen was a little unusual & made us a little concerned when we crossed paths with pub customers in our nightclothes, especially as there’s no downstairs toilet. One morning we came downstairs to find several people in the pub meeting for breakfast, even though we had been told the pub didn’t open until 4pm. Because of this we felt uneasy about putting the children to bed, a baby monitor may have helped ease our concerns.
On the plus side it’s in a lovely location & the stations is very close by. We went to Whitby by train, it only took about 40 mins & was very cheap. We had a nice break away but I feel it’s more ‘in-spite’ of the accommodation , as opposed to ‘because of it’

Room 6 is supposedly a small double. It would be a small single at a stretch. No where to put your case.no drawer space and hardly any hanging space. The small fridge and kettle etc is in a cupboard that I'm not certain would pass fire regs. The water tank is in a different cupboard making the room a extremely hot. There is fan but not sure where you are expected to stand it. Thank goodness we weren't there during the heat wave! Moving around the room needs negotiation with your room mate.
The bathroom has a spa bath but is dirty down the side as only twizzle could reach down the side to clean it. The dispenser bottle for soap was dirty.
They no longer do food in the evenings and breakfast is pre cooked and kept warm until your alloted breakfast time.
We tried to discuss these problems but the management wouldn't come out from the back to talk to us. We paid for 3 nights but could only stay 1 it was so uncomfortable.

A good price and great location. Picturesque yet close to Whitby. The staff were all lovely and friendly. Our room had lovely views of the river but was so tiny it was awkward manoeuvring around the room. The bathroom door was terrible and was a sort of folding one that was hard to shut but was the only type they could use in that small room I guess. The breakfast in the morning had been waiting for us under a grill - hard eggs , but it was plentiful and and tasty. Would be good to be given a choice of egg options too though. Lovely bar full of friendly locals and great priced beer too!

We had a pleasant stay for 3 nights as explored Whitby and surrounding areas. Our room and bathroom was very clean. The breakfast was very nice and the lady that served us each morning was lovely. Dog friendly but unfortunately there was no evening meal we could pay for that was available which said there was when booked so having days out was hoping for even a bar snack when we got back so went without or had to drive a few miles to bring something back. Thought slightly overpriced.

We had a friendly welcome and were given a double room with a smaller room attached with a settee and wardrobe. There was plenty of tea and coffee with fresh milk in a small fridge. Room was clean and comfortable. Plenty of parking outside or in the local car park. The inn doesn't do food everyday but we were there for pizza night and the food was lovely and reasonably priced. The inn is a 20 min drive from Whitby. Staff were all very friendly and our included cooked breakfast was plentiful. Would definitely recommend.

Me and my partner stayed at the board inn for a night away. We were greeted by really friendly staff and shown to our room and explained what was happening. We had the home made pizzas which were nice and definitely worth the money. Breakfast was also nice and there was plenty of it. The owner made us feel very welcome and included with the locals.

Would highly recommend The Board Inn for anyone looking for somewhere quiet to stay and would definitely return again.

P.S. the gin selection is amazing!!!
