Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

The hotel seemed very quiet on arrival, the room was interesting, a very large dining/sitting area with a dining table set for 10 and a separate bedroom with 4 poster bed .It was freezing not pre heated and the radiators weren't on, there were two small plug in heaters for the two rooms. The one in the bedroom stunk of paraffin? I think, so we had to change it for the other one and close the door between the rooms, the bedroom soon warmed up but the living room where the only TV was was useless too cold to sit in. Dinner was served in the bar with the few other guests and was well cooked and tasty but felt like you were having a bar meal. Sadly due to Covid the full benefits of the hotel weren't used pre dinner drinks etc. They did temp checks on arrival with plenty of Covid procedure inc. cutlery in sealed plastic bags.

What a lovely find. The food was delicious and served in perfect timescales. (We wanted desserts so asked for a gap between courses) polite and friendly waitress and the owner is an absolute gem, really made us laugh with his tales. Lovely surroundings. What else can I say apart from, when we can, we need to support these lovely places to keep them going in these different times. A big 5 stars from us. Thank you.

Food was delicious but was (only slightly) disappointed by lack of info available regarding breakfast times, breakfast menu, checkout etc. Bar closed at 10pm and place was plunged into darkness. No signage obvious to state this. Went down from the room to get a drink at just back of 10:00pm and everywhere was pitch black and was obvious that was our night away over. Had there been a warning, we would have taken 2 drinks when we went to the room after dinner but there wasn’t. Wasn’t looking for bottles of whiskey, wine or any such, just a glass of gin and a single dram. So that was our night away was over at 10pm. A little disappointing. But, this didn’t take away from the truly beautiful place, lovely kind and accommodating staff and stunning place. Would still absolutely recommend and enjoyed stay. Just wish our night didn’t have to end so early. (I’d like to stress we’re not big drinkers, just when you’re away, it’s nice to have a drink or 2, or at least the option. We had 3 drinks total and went down to bar to get last just after 10pm, but couldn’t, only complaint on that was the no info from staff that this was case, and no signage to inform us either. I understand opening the hotel in these unprecedented times means making a lot of changes, and we know you did all you could to protect guest safety etc and there simply may be a reason why you had to close or couldn’t put up a sign, this is just me wondering why?) PS - we visited on their very first night open since lockdown. Lovely people. Very likely simple reason for no warning re bar. DO VISIT. This place is truly beautiful with stunning grounds and the nicest, most accommodating staff with the loveliest food I’ve ever tasted.

Couldn't fault the room, staff, buffet/carvery or the log fires in the hall and breakfast area. We had a super night at the Crees/Turner event and when most were in fancy dress were delighted at the staff's reaction to this. Well done all staff for your professionalism.

Booked a suite double for one night as a birthday treat and we were allocated the honeymoon suite. Check in was friendly & straight forward, simply handed us the room keys without signing or taking any bank card details ! Room was spotless, very spacious and suitably decorated & furnished for the period of the building. A small decanter of sherry is provided in the room which is an unusual but nice touch. Had a couple of pre dinner drinks in the bar which was cosy & comfortable in lovely surroundings. The 3 course dinner was absolutely delicious in the restaurant served by the very friendly & professional Julia. We found ourselves playing 'name that tune' over dinner to the well received background music. Julia appeared with a small cake with a candle in it as a wee surprise at the end of our meal so many thanks & well done for that Julie. After a very peaceful & comfortable nights sleep the breakfast was once again delicious. Then it was time to simply check out, so tremendous thanks to Julia and indeed the whole team at the Castle Hotel for making this a memorable occasion. Highly recommended.

We spent 3 nights in this superbly managed high quality hotel which echoes days of gracious living. Cannot praise the staff highly enough, who go out of their way to ensure your stay is 1st class. Wonderful food, especially the amazing scrambled eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast! Excellent set lunch menu, al a carte or bar food. The choice is yours. All of the bedrooms, and public rooms, are beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. Log fires and fresh flowers throughout the hotel create a peaceful homely ambiance. Can thoroughly recommend this little gem, either for a relaxing stay, a special event in the glorious dining room, or just a simple drink or meal in the bar area.
