We had a wonderful two night stay here at Balmacara Mains. Host Dougie was very knowledgeable about the area and happy to assist with our hiking plans. He and Jennie prepared us a wonderful breakfast both days. The rooms are accessed from the outside which I appreciated. Modern clean rooms and the views of the Loch and hills beyond and incredible.
I often do a lot of research before booking a room but in this case I did not. Balmacara Mains just happened to be in the ideal place close to Skye and Eilean Donan Castle, well what and incredible surprise it turned out to be! We were greeted by Jenny, who was super friendly and welcoming, the rooms are spotlessly clean and very well appointed, we have just spent 15 days on a trip around the lochs, the NC500 and the Isle of Skye and this was by far the most comfortable bed of the 14 different hotels we stayed at. As a guest house there is no evening food option but there are many local places to eat either nice restaurants or simple takeaway (which we went for) Jenny was able to provide a large folder full of menus from different options for guests to look through. The guest house has a homely, comfortable feel with a lovely lounge area where you can play games or watch TV (we played cards) The breakfast was epic! The best French toast I have ever had. Genuinely cannot recommend this place enough it was really lovely, comfortable and very, very peacful.…
We spent quite a bit of time trying to decide where to stay for a short foray to this part of Scotland. Flying into Inverness from the States around midafternoon, we did not want to drive all the way to Skye on our first day yet wanted to be within easy distance of some of the hiking trails. Balmacara Mains was in the right place at the right time. It took a little less than two hours to drive from INV, and we went through some beautiful territory along the A890. The staff had made a reservation in Plockton for dinner, which was lovely, and the next day we spent exploring Kilt rock, the Quirang, and Old Storr. Rested at the guesthouse, then had an easy drive back to Inverness and on to Speyside. The guesthouse is somewhere in between a boutique hotel and a B & B - the rooms are a bit creaky in places but the bed is comfy and the bathrooms are modern with plenty of hot water. The setting is just wonderful - some of the rooms look out over the moody Loch Alsch, and the shoreline and woods surrounding the house are open for exploration. It's wonderfully peaceful and picturesque. The room temperature was a bit difficult to adjust and the decor was maybe slapdash but not outdated, but for the price point, all was acceptable. It fit our needs, but if you are not rushing, consider Portree.…
My home away from home. I have a wonderful experience each time I have been here. Please come down to Balmacara Mains Guesthouse to spend some quality time with yourself or your family. Prefect, pristine and peaceful ♥️ . Best breakfast spread you could ask for.
My wife and I were travelling through the Scottish Highlands as our "Staycation" this year and looked forward to our short stay at Balmacara Mains Guesthouse. Due to the Covid19 restrictions we were not met by any of the staff on arrival and did a "self check-in" the room was lovely as was the bathroom and sitting room attached, we stayed in Room 3 with a nice view over the loch. The bed was very comfortable as was the whole accommodation. Breakfast was average enough - the bacon seemed to have no taste at all and the 2 girls serving were kept quite busy attending all the guests. We missed the personal touch but would stay again if we are in the area.
