I just finished a three night stay at Hotel El Mono Feliz, managed by Mikey and Diana. I stayed in Room 8 with a friend, as part of a trip for my birding club. There were 14 of us staying at the hotel, with a guide, to explore birds in the area.

Breakfast was superb at the hotel. It was vegetarian based with three choices per day including gallo pinto, avocado toast , or a rotating daily special. The one morning we would not be around for breakfast, they packed muffins and fruit for the group to go. The muffins were incredible. My fav breakfast was the overnight oats. There is also a little kitchen area where guests can take things from the mini bar and charge your room.

My room was super nice. Two bedrooms with a bathroom and kitchen, three beds. It had fans and ac and a nice deck. It also backed up to a river that was super relaxing. Shower water was hot and had good pressure.

The property has beautiful plants and flowers and is a bird haven. It backs up to a river that has many birds and wildlife. There are feeders near the dining area so you can watch the birds while you eat or relax. The pool is the perfect temperature and super nice as well.

The nearby road is beautiful for walking and viewing birds as well. Nearby restaurants are all fabulous, but my fav by far was the bamboo room.

Go here and relax with the managers, mikey and diana. They treat everyone like family and go out of there way to make sure you are happy.

Pura vida.

We just came back from El Mono Feliz and it was one of the best hotel we had during our 12 days stay in Costa Rica.
Diana and Mike are wonderful hosts and their hotel (more like a bed and Breakfast) is very welcoming in a beautiful sitting.
We stayed in a family room which has a separate room for the kids (2 double beds), a very well equipped kitchenette (even if we didn't use it), a private bath (with toilet, sink and shower) a dinning table for 4 and, in a separate area closed by a curtain, a queen bed for the parents. There is also AC and fan to keep us cool. Outside you can enjoy a deck with tables, shared with 2 others room.
The room was spotless clean and I'm very picky.
You can also enjoy a deck overlooking the river (perfect for Yoga), a small pool and parking.
In the morning we can enjoy a delicious breakfast but it could be a little repetitive after 3 or 4 days because it's always the choice between every day Avocado Toasts (a favorite among our teens) or pinto gallo (the only thing we didn't try) and every other day Banana pancakes or Banana French Toasts with strawberries on top. You also have choice between tea or coffee. Every thing was delicious but maybe a little more choices will be appreciated....
The owners can also arrange tours for you if needed and help you with bats if needed ;-)!
Overall for us it was a perfect match between quality and price and if we are in the area again we will certainly stay here.

Ojochal is a very tiny community but with a lot of very good restaurants and 2 french bakeries!!!. So the fact that El Mono Feliz doesn't have an in-site restaurant didn't bother us.
Thank you again Mike and Diana!
Sophie, Jerome, Jules and Clara.

My husband and I stopped at Hotel el Mono Feliz during a road trip to Drakes Bay. It was late, raining, and we knew we had to find a place to stay. Because of the good reviews, we decided to stay here.

We arrived late, unannounced, with no reservation. Diana and Mickey couldn't have been more accomodating. They took us to our room with had a small kitchenette, dining table, and two very comfortable beds. The pillows felt new and the linens were soft.

But the best part was the next day when Diana brought breakfast to my room! It was delicious and even included banana bread. We then had some time to spare so we checked out the grounds.

People are often quick to stay at big resorts, but usually those resorts don't have mature plants or are in the best locations. Hotel el Mono Feliz has a mature garden in the back with royal palms adjacent to a river. There is a rancho where you can swing on a hammock and watch white face monkeys overhead! A cute coati even passed us by. It was so relaxing there, I took a nap.

There are a few important things that make a stay average to excellent. And that is a clean room, soft bedding, and people who are just flat out nice running the place. Nothing is ever perfect when traveling, but a smiling face upon your arrival can change everything.

Next time I plan another road trip, I will certainly stay there again.

What a gem of a hotel in Ojochal! We stayed three nights at El Mono Feliz and it was a wonderful experience. Mikey and Diana are fantastic. They were not only excellent hosts, but also helped us with gaining reservations to zip lining and the Bamboo Room. The rooms were crisp, clean and had available air conditioning. The breakfasts were made to order and had favorites such as gallo pinto, avocado toast or the daily special. The day that we headed out early for zip lining Mikey and Diana made us a breakfast to go containing fruit, muffins and even a little chocolate cake! The pool area was immaculate. We also partook of the honor system Imperials in the fridge by the kitchen. We would highly recommend Hotel El Mono Feliz and will plan on returning ourselves to stay even longer!

Mike and Diana couldn't have been better hosts, and they really are the main reason you should stay here. They went out of their way to help us make the most of our limited time in Costa Rica. The facilities are not luxurious, but they are comfortable and clean. The morning breakfasts were fantastic. I especially enjoyed the yoga pavilion, a "hidden" spot by the river which was a great place to relax with a good book. One word of caution however, if you have mobility issues I would recommend staying in the main building rather than one of the bungalows, as there are numerous steps you and your luggage must traverse to get to them. We will definitely stay there again if we are in Ojochal.

My husband and I moved to this area and we were a few days early to move into our rental in Ojochal. We booked three nights at El Mono Feliz, recommended by our future landlady. Beautiful B&B, the setting is very special, in the jungle and next to a river. Lots of wildlife, so many different birds and butterflies, and of course monkeys! Mikey and Diana are the managers and they are one of a kind! They make this place so awesome, they are the best hostesses one could ask for. Everything was perfect, I highly recommend El Mono Felliz.

We enjoyed our two night stay at Hotel El Mono Feliz. The property is absolutely beautiful with trees, flowers, hummingbirds, other birds, a lovely pool & a sweet yoga shala by the river. Accommodations include rooms & cabins. We were in a small room with a comfortable bed, nice sheets, good towels, including pool or beach towels. Breakfast is included & is delicious! Lisa, the hostess during our stay, was super friendly, helpful & had great suggestions as to where to go/where to eat.

Just stayed here with some friends for a few days and it was an amazing experience. Mickey and Diana are the best hosts anyone could ask for. They bend over backwards to make everyone feel at home and well cared for. The place is spotlessly clean, beautiful pool, beautiful grounds and lots of fabulous birds. I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a romantic getaway or just a place to hang out with friends or family.

We have been to Ojochal many times and find that Mikey and Diana are a true asset to this property. They really go out of their way to meet your needs and make your visit the best possible experience. We will return just to gain more local knowledge from them. The breakfasts are outstanding - healthy and beautifully presented.

Hi, we don't have a room that will accommodate five people... unfortunately! And we don't have beds that can be rolled in. We can accommodate in two rooms close by, or we can recommend hotels nearby. There is zip lining very close - and wildlife is all over. :-)

Hi guys, I am allergic to dogs. Is that a problem? regards schliek. the Netherlands
Answer from Jeff

Both dogs are old and have one eye between them. One is a very short haired dog and the other one is totally blind and is only around when being attended to. So I don't think it would be a problem.
