We stayed here two nights and dearly wanted to stay longer; we would have gone out of our way to do so if we hadn't already booked reservations further up the coast. It really isn't too hard to reach the property - no vertiginous climbs, and the roads aren't too bad. The property is just stunning, a steep, sweeping, beautifully landscaped sort of valley culminating in a surrounding of lush rainforest and mountains. The owners, Enzo and his lovely wife Jeanette, are such gracious hosts, obviously very proud of their property, and Enzo was delighted to show us around the grounds, pointing out vanilla bean vines, pineapple plants, guanacaste trees and ylang ylang. The grounds are beautifully fragrant with the scent of ylang ylang flowers.
Be prepared to descend quite a few steps built into the hillside to get to the cabanas, which each have their own hammocks and are breezy, lovely, and so clean you could eat off the floors. I don't know what it took to get such amenities into the Costa Rican rainforest, but the owners obviously care very much about the comfort of their guests.
After checking in and relaxing, we walked back up the hill and dined by candle light in the open air restaurant on the side of the main hotel property. Do yourself a favor and order the fresh pasta. My pasta-loving husband was on cloud nine! Gorgeous ribbons of tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms, or clam sauce, or carbonara...I salivate at the memory. Not even the gorgeous-looking pizzas could tempt us away from having pasta both nights. Breakfast is equally delicious, served in the same area, overlooking that magnificent vista of rainforest and mountains.
It's also a spectacular place to bird watch - many species come to visit from the forest and their calls are as varied as the fauna. Surrounding the properties base, if you are willing to venture a bit further, is a stream that runs back through the rainforest, ripe for exploring.

When it was time to pack up and go, the husband got a bit misty-eyed. The only negative thing about our experience at Mamma e Papa is that it's 2500 miles from our home!

We spent two evenings at Mamma e Papa and they were both incredible. The service is outstanding and the food is equally as amazing. Made to feel at home instantly and was family friendly. Will make this a regular stop on ALL future visits.

This is a fantastic quiet hotel. It's off the beaten path just south of Uvita in Ojochal but easy to find. We were greeted by Enzo, the owner/operator, who saw to our every need. The bungalow rooms were spotless, clean and comfortable. The grounds were absolutely beautiful, manicured and luxurious. We saw toucans and macaws in the trees surrounding the property. The pool was refreshing and clean. There is an honor "bar" next to the pool with cerveza, water, and non alcoholic drinks. There is an outdoor TV lounge complete with a pool table. There are other games that you can play in this covered lounge area. Enzo will call you on one of the phones located around the small grounds when your food is ready! The parking area is secure behind a locked gate.
The food was excellent: pizza (Enzo is Italian and serves up savory Italian fare.), local desserts and a wine list. The breakfast was great as well: gallo pinto (CR rice and beans) with eggs or pancakes, etc.
We would return in a heartbeat. It was like staying with a friend. Enzo and his wife were most attentive to our needs.

Mamma e papa' is a little paradise on earth!
Enzo and Ginette are really nice. The restaurant is really good and really Italian. Nice and clean room. Fantastic pool in a beautiful garden. What else to say?....don't miss it if you travel in the area.
We really hope to get back one day.
Grazie Enzo and Ginette

My hubby and I stopped at ma'amI e papa's for a single night but I ish we could have stayed longer. The place is wonderful, independent private cottages dot the hill of the property. Everything is very clean and modern Inside. The pool is lovely, the billiards and bar are a fun unexpected addition. I loved the wooden swings at the top of the hill near the al fresco restaurant. The wine and food are impeccable, but the true star is Enzo our host. He is so welcoming and genuinely helpful. He helped carry our oversized suitcases to our room, he conversed with us at length about Costa Rica and his experiences while answering our questions. He offered tips in the best beaches, the best views of the area, the wildlife. He also checked in with us to make sure everything was well with the room and our stay. And when we were checking out he again helped with bags and sent us off with a warm goodbye. Such a beautiful experience! Go!

This is the best of the places I visited in Costa Rica. I booked for 1 night and extended to FOUR it was so nice. The owners, Enzo (Italian) and Jinet (Costa Rican) take clear pride in their beautiful little cabins, their Italian restaurant, and in being perfect hosts. Enzo is very knowledgeable about the area, sent me to the BEST beach ever (Playa Ventana, 10 minutes from the hotel), and helped me to set up excursions to Corcovado and for snorkeling. At night sometimes I heard howler monkeys in the trees, and there was a bird festival every morning. The room was extremely quiet and comfortable, and each cabin is quite private from the others. I wish I could go back every year... maybe I will!

OK, as others have noted, these cabinas are SPOTLESS, and clearly the owner takes pride in maintaining them (thus the many signs about what one can and cannot bring into them). And the breakfast we had was fantastic esp the coffee.

However, the property is in town and backs onto a creek/wooded area, and Ojochal is full of loose dogs, and the result is that we didn't get a wink of sleep all night and moved elsewhere. By Enzo's reaction to our complaint, I don't think it was a one-time event. (And let me distinguish this disturbance from cicadas, frogs, and the other nighttime wildlife noises that are quite enjoyable to drift off to. Even being woken up at 5:30 by monkeys is fine with me -- at least it's dawn. My point is that we aren't over-sensitive to noise as a rule.)

Also the pool is in the middle of the property, completely unshaded and therefore super-hot (as well as in full view of restaurant terrace).

We stayed in this small hotel for 5 days in March 2013 with our six year old daughter and her grandparents. On previous trips to the area, we had eaten at the Mamma e Papa restaurant on a few occasions and our experience was always exceptional - terrific food, terrific service, terrific atmosphere. Enzo, the owner/host, is always friendly and attentive and upon discovering that there was a hotel on the property, we decided to try it out. They have four private cabinas/chalets and we booked two; the family room, which had a queen bed and a single bed, for us and a chalet with a king size bed for the grandparents. The rooms were exceptionally clean and well maintained and had very comfortable beds. There is a lovely pool with a common area including a self-serve beverage fridge, as well as an outdoor entertainment room with a television and a pool table. The grounds are immaculate and beautiful (be aware that there is a set of steps to get down to the hotel that would not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues). We even had the opportunity to see toucans in the trees surrounding the pool during an evening swim - beats high end luxury any day! Our experience was excellent and we will stay here again in August and on any return trips to the area.

We arrived tired, hot, dirty and discouraged after our original plans didn't work out. I booked this room because it was available immediately and the price was right. We were not sure what to expect. Imagine our relief when we were greeted by our kind hosts and offered a cold drink. We were then shown to our room, which was clean, comfortable, and brand new. The rooms are little cabins complete with a hammock on the front porch. The shower was very nice. They have a pool and a rancho for guest use with a pool table and tv area. The restaurant is affordable and the food is spectacular. Everything was delicious. Breakfast was included and it was very nice. We felt pampered and cared for throughout our four day stay. Enzo even drove us into town one morning for one of our tours. They arranged tours and taxis for us. A few things could probably be added that would make the place a little more convenient. There was no hair dryer, iron, TV, or coffee maker in the room, pretty standard items for most folks. There is no vent fan in the bathroom so it gets kind of steamy. There is a posted sign in the room "no food or drink in the room". I can't recall ever having this restriction in a hotel before. Also the rooms are located at the bottom of a pretty big hill, so if you had any sort of limited mobility this would not be a good spot. But we loved this place and we will take away great memories. Thank you Enzo and Janette we had a great time.

We spent a long weekend in one of Mamma e Papa's "Cabinas" during our trip in Costa Rica. Clean ( recently built ) really relaxed atmosphere, we enjoyed fresh and authentic Italian food ( Enzo, the owner, is actually Italian ) being surrounded by the stunning green landscape that only Costa Rica can offer. The swimming pool was just outside our cabina. Really pleasant place to stay.
