The sign at the entrance to this inn says "welcome" in four different languages. This set the tone for the whole of our stay. The staff here seem genuinely kind and welcoming. Everywhere you go they wave and smile and call a cheery greeting. This inn is sited in the middle of a national park. The Forrest surrounding it was...

The onsen hotel is surprisingly modern with large, clean rooms and ensuite bathroom. The hot springs are very close to the hotel, resulting in a egg-like smell being present everywhere. However, you get used to it pretty fast. The baths are really nice and there is even one with naked mixed-sex bathing. The dinner and breakfast are nice and plentiful.

Kuroyu is traditional onsen with lovely river and woodland views. It consists of a series of small buildings, some with thatched roofs, which gives it a certain rustic charm. However it also means going outside to get from one place to another which was quite chilly, even in June. The room was a standard tatami room with the usual facilities...

The review of our experience in Kuroyu just has to start with the excellent fall foilage/scenic drive up Nyuto. It should be highlighted that upon arrival at the carpark, one has to walk down a tiny uneven path so large suitcases are better off left in the car boot. The rustic charm of the thatched roof wooden blocks sits well...
