The hotel was originally built as a country residence for the Hon. Rollo Russell, Whose father, Lord John Russell was England’s first Liberal Prime Minister. Sometime during the early 1900’s, The house known then as Thorshill was leased to a part time minister of the local congregational church, he and his wife, ran Thorshill as a private guesthouse up until 1949. The building has been a hotel ever since. Nowadays set in picturesque and peaceful location, right opposite The Devil’s Punchbowl itself, The hotel is the best place to relax in a truly rural setting. We can meet all private and business needs with 32 spacious bedrooms, The superb Thorshill Restaurant offering excellent cuisine & wine, our traditional pub and a conference and function room, all equipped to the highest standard.

Lovely location across the road from all the walks and the common. This hotel could be something really special. Beautiful old building but the decor is really tired, it lacks cosy lighting, sports channel on in the bar etc.), mould on some of the fittings in the bathroom. The staff were friendly, but the organisation was haphazard and odd. But it was the food that really let this place down. Main evening meals were cold. Had to wait 15 minutes for my son’s meal after we’d all had ours. His burger was the only decent thing we ordered and was hot but his chips were hard and undercooked. I ordered fajitas which was really bad and not fajitas at all. Fajitas should be served sizzling hot with sliced onions and peppers with a few tortilla wraps and guacamole, sour cream and cheese. What I got was cold chicken in a curry like sauce served in a cold, stale wholemeal wrap covered in mayonnaise (!!) and not a slice of pepper in sight as promised on the menu! On top was a spoonful of guacamole and sour cream. I sent it back to be reheated and asked for the mayonnaise to be removed. When it came back heated up there was no guacamole or sour cream anymore and I was told that the peppers were mixed into the sauce! Clearly the owners have never had fajitas in a restaurant because this is not it. The waiter (who was also the barman) was brusque and was very defensive when I questioned the fajitas. He could not tell us the flavour of the beef pie other than that it had beef in it! When I saw the pie served on another table it was evident that it was pre bought. When clearing the table the waiter didn’t offer us dessert or coffee but just went back to the bar to sit down where he even smiled at us when we had to get up to get our own dessert menus, so he clearly did not know that it would be normal in a restaurant to offer desserts at the table. When I went to the bar to pay there was no itemised bill presented. I had to pay first and then look at the bill to make sure it was correct. We ordered two lemonades for our children and they brought whole pints of lemonade without asking us what size we wanted. He could see they were for children! Then charged us £3.50 for a pint of lemonade! Breakfast was no better and all the full English breakfasts were lukewarm. My eggs had clearly been cooked well in advance and were dripping with grease. I hat eto think where the meat and eggs came from at £6 a head for a full English. Really disappointing. If the owners knew how to run a hotel and restaurant, for a realtively small amount of money this could be turned into a really cosy country pub.

We enjoyed our brief stay at The Devil’s Punchbowl Hotel. As many have observed the decor was rather tired but the room was clean, the twin beds comfortable and the breakfast quite acceptable. Parking was straightforward and all the staff were pleasant and helpful. Our room was quiet and there was no traffic noise as the hotel is situated at the end of a no-through road just opposite the entrance to the punchbowl itself (National Trust).

Hotel is on the old A3 at Hindhead and since the bypass tunnel opened the area is now a bit of a backwater. A group of us booked for “Elvis Night” and meals were selected in advance from the menu options. Meals took a while to get served but have to say we all agreed the food was above expectation in quality (most of us made the same choice of lamb for main). Tribute act (Scott Elvis) was superb and got almost everyone up onto the dance area. If I had one comment to make it would be the gap between the two sets was overlong. We didn’t stay overnight and so can’t comment on accommodation. Large car park is a bonus and hotel is convenient for the Devil’s Punchbowl if you want a stroll through the woodland.

Pros: Location, hosepipe.

Cons: Cleanliness, “Secure bike storage”, Outrageous cost!

To be fair I had my doubts about booking this place but it’s location seemed, and is perfect, if you are riding the ‘King Alfred’s Way’.

We transferred our luggage by courier between hotels but the manager initially rejected the bags, despite us arranging this weeks in advance. All items were clearly labelled with the party name as instructed.

On arrival we were given use of a hosepipe which was much appreciated. Unfortunately the connection being dodgy needs an extra pair of hands to hold it on. No biggie for a group of 4, but in hindsight this was the first indication of the standard of housekeeping we observerd throughout the hotel.

We weren’t allowed to keep the bikes in our room despite them being cleaned and dried and us carrying polythene for that purpose. We were told that we could keep them in a secure room that would be locked at all times.. In actuality this was a conference room that was never locked because the lock had actually been removed (see pic). With £14k worth of bikes I was glad that we had plenty of heavy duty locks in our luggage.

If we had kept the bikes in the room they would have been the cleanest thing in there!

Amazingly the Crowne Plaza in Reading had no such issues with our request to keep bikes in the room. Even more amazing is it was way cheaper, even the breakfast was cheaper and it had a swimming pool!!!

This place needs major investment, or failing that a good scrub, a makeover and a reality check!

The worst hotel ever. Greeted with mid decor reception, electric wires poking out the wall, stained carpets, dirty bathroom, old blackened grouting and scummy hand wash bottles. No light above the mirror but left with the old casing. Dusty, broken, wobbly lampshades, security light hanging off the ceiling, broken arm rest for the old single glazed window, wall paper hanging off.
Later greeted by reception staff smoking and on his mobile at the front door.
Broken floor tiles in the bar being dug out + plastered during breakfast and my daughter was served burnt toast.
On our return to the room at 4pm no housekeeping or cleaning evident= only one bin had been changed, leaving the bathroom bin with female sanitary products still full, carpet not hoovered, the towel used to mop up the leaking shower still on the floor, and bed not made or even turned back.
No heating controls on the radiator so we were cold in the afternoon + evening as the heating went off.
The only slight redeeming feature was one male receptionist + one female bar staff were friendly and helpful when I asked for fresh toast for my daughter.
This hotel is under refurbishment and in some places looks ok = they've decorated the walls but not bothered to update the ceiling fitments in the dining room next to the bar.
I suggested to the Duty Manager that warning customers ahead of arrival of refurbishment or making the standard of hotel transparent on their website was a basic requirement. They clearly didn't agree.
I was given a full refund but would have preferred not to be there at all, especially as it was supposed to be a treat for my autistic daughter.
My advice= don't bother wasting your money, it's so grim I didn't even really want to give it one star.

What a great place. Friendly welcome staff including the manager Ivan.
Went above and beyond accommodating two weary cyclists, bikes and their damp muddy kit.
Everyone was helpful and polite but seeing the manager at nearly midnight washing and drying some kit and then repeating the drying process himself early the next morning make me want to call him - Ivan the Wonderful!

When we went to the hotel to check in the staff were sultry and unfriendly & we were clearly a nuisance. I took my bag to my room - 314. It had no working lights. When I mentioned this I was asked 'well, do you need the lights now?' to which I replied in the negative but did point out that I would need them when I returned at past midnight. Of course when I returned at 1.30am the lights still didn't work. A very grumpy man told me he would look into it. I said I was too tired. He then knocked on my room door to say that he would connect the lights but that I was to be sure not to switch on several appliances at once! Clearly some bad wiring in this hotel and that means one thing - DANGER. All the fire doors were propped open when I checked in at lunch time. I am sure if the fire brigade ran a random check here there would be concerns. My friend paid for several rooms for her guests and was devastated at the dreadful attitude. Another room had a door that didn't lock. These things are BASIC to the running of an hotel - i.e. a door that locks and lights that work!

Do not reccomend. Management has no hospitality experience or consideration for their customers.

We stayed at the hotel on a quiet Friday night and we were very disappointed.

From the moment we arrived we felt like we were not greeted professionally. More of an inconvenience that we were there.

We chose this hotel due to its location and name. The quirky photos on booking.com, however these are not accurate in the slightest.

We only saw two members of staff throughout our stay. Both were not pleasant nor showed any enthusiasm of working in the place. Moaning that we asked for butter for our toast, sarcastically replying when we thought they had run out of tea/ coffee.
The breakfast was cold. The feeling  of being an inconvenience throughout the whole stay. The rudeness of staff. The tiredness and depreciation of the hotel.
When we returned at 11.30pm from a local wedding, we asked if we could get a drink from the bar, only to be told straight away that they have shut. We accepted this, and then asked if we could buy a bottle of wine, this too was a no. No thought on residents for the hotel.

The room was very very dated. Fixtures broken or missing, bed was a double not a king. Shower was mouldy. Very cheap toilet paper.
Overall the room felt dirty and not comfy. Kept all clothes in suitcase instead of using the uninviting waredrob.

I have contacted the hotel on several occasions through booking.com first and then directly. After finally receiving recognition of my complaint, they have refused to refund my night stay.

For a hotel that doesn't take pride in its appearance or management, the thought of not solving my issue says it all about the place and the management.

All that's good about this place is the poor receptionist/ bar/ waiting staff that did their best to put things right.
The Hotel is in dire need of updating and decorating as it looks very old and tired and looks like nothing has been done in the accommodation rooms for many, many years.
1st room we were given was so small and of very poor decoration. Water stains on the walls and ceiling aTiny tv that my laptop has a bigger screen and the room was ice cold as it was -4 outside and no heating on. The bathroom was in a very poor state.
The receptionist came and climbed under and behind the drawers to turn the radiator on.
You could hear EVERYTHING from rooms above people walking and flushing the toilet sounded like a waterfall in the room. There was a
Broken electric plug socket, cracks in ceiling.. pictures hanging off of walls.
We were moved to another room after being shown a few others.. We chose a
Much nicer room..a decent size, tv a watchable size, bathroom bareable all though the floor tiles were cracked and a water stain on the sink work top which turned out to be condensation dripping out of the extractor fan which also ran down the shaver point.
Hairdryer didn't work..
We settled for the room as it was far better than the other rooms we were shown and settled down for the night . The breakfast was fine ,(although overpriced if you were paying£16 for it) The young lady serving was pleasant and made us feel welcome. We went out for the day , came back after a meal and settled down for the night, watching tv... until bed bugs appeared ... So at 11.20pm we went down to reception with the 1st of many bed bugs in a glass and said we will be leaving and want a refund which the man on reception arranged after calling the manager. So we were on the Internet at 11.30 on a Saturday night trying to find a room. The only room we could find was 11 miles away on a night that was -4 °.
The Pictures of the rooms on the website do not reflect what we were offered.
The poor receptionist was very apologetic.
Needless to say we won't be back.
very overpriced for condition of rooms.
photos should represent whats on offer...

We had a new member of staff working his first shift attending to our table, he was insufficiently supervised. He did his best, was polite and when mistakes were made he apologised genuinely. We were provided with the new / reduced menu after placing our order (slightly annoying), then were informed they had run out of burgers after again choosing and ordering (frustrating as this was the only meal that one of our party wanted). One of the meals served was incorrect (mistakes do happen), but the quality of food was shocking. We ate some of it, mostly because this meal was following a long gym session and we were all extremely hungry. Excuses were made about the kitchen not being fully operational due to upgrades etc, but this definitely doesn't excuse the terrible food. The staff handled everything politely and with grace and reduced our bill accordingly without an issue, but the management of this establishment need to have a serious think about the food they are serving and training / supervision they are providing.
The young lad who was serving us finished his shift before we finished our meals, he came out to apologise to us before leaving, and we were very impressed by this, and grateful for his honesty.
Overall I would not recommend this place as somewhere to eat.
