Onsen is overall nice, but can do with more amenities namely additional towels, drinking water for the private onsens. Only the main onsens have such facilities... Rooms facilities is average and expensive for the price we paid... compared with other hotels we stayed and paying less.. The kaiseki dinner was a flop... service was slow... have to ask staff several...

Had a blast at Sankoen. First time experience with onsen. Love the fact they have a lot of private onsen and also public onsen. The dinner and breakfast was excellent. Such a great time and wished we should've planned a longer stay. Took one star away because the of pest infestation. We noticed on 3rd and 4th floor, the rooms...

Location and transportation - Located about 15 mins drive away from the main train station on top of hill, Sankoen takes advantage of this, offering some nice view from guest rooms, as well as the numerous private outdoor onsens. However, the downside is you cannot walk (must be over an hour if you do) to the main town. They only...

This ryokan provides transport transfer from the train station to the hotel. The room is ample size for four, and kids love dressing up in kimono. Dinner was Kaiseki which was pretty full when we finished. We headed to the hot baths after dinner, there are male and female public baths, and four individual private baths which is on first...

Was very disappointed with the hotel. Staff were friendly and generally helpful. Room had mildew on the walls and ceiling. We made a cup of tea out of the plastic urn provided but it was not drinkable as tasted like plastic. The lovely staff who made our beds for us asked if we had made tea, we mentioned the awful...

We decided to walk from the train station to the hotel on the evening we arrived at this lovely town. It took us 45 minutes, including all photo taking time. It's worthwhile. We walked past local houses or cottages. Massive area of paddy fields is connected with the sky which turned golden brown as the sun came down behind the...

This hotel is not close to the station, but they sent a staff to greet us at the station and drive us to the hotel in 5 minutes. This hotel is not big but they have a common onsen and 5 private onsen. Therefore, I can occupy the onsen with my wife, especially good when there was snow falling! Their...

Spent 2 glorious nights here in Oct 2014 but wished it had been five! Nice, clean premises and rooms, impeccable, helpful staff, wonderful private hotsprings open 24/7. Twice we ran into problems with our booking but both times the General Manager, Mr. Sasawaga-san, sorted us out promptly. Our first stay here, but certainly won't be our last. Keep it up,...

This was our second trip to Yufuin in one year, so we decided to try another ryokan and picked Sankoen. It is quite far to Yufuin town area, so the hotel has to give you a lift there or you can drive there yourself. The hotel staff are really nice and will drop you right downtown and meet you at...

“All rooms seem to face the same side so you should be able to get a room with a balcony and a view over the valley. For the private baths it's just first in first served and it's not easy to secure the one on the floor as that's shared amongst all the rooms on the same floor. You may have take a bath at odd hours like 5pm or 6:30am.”
