The staff were excellent, helpful and friendly. The kaiseki meal was served in a private dining room and was exceptional.
We had booked into the twin room . Wow it was huge with a bedroom , dining room as well as a wash basin and toilet . Only letdown was that there was no shower nor bathtub . Another friend had booked the one with private indoor and outdoor onsens and they were beautiful .
This hotel had two private onsens that one could use anytime . You hang a “in use” sign on the door each time you use and it was very beautiful .
The public bath was also unique and picturesque .
Kaiseiki dinner was delicious with wagyu beef .
Breakfast was Japanese style and was also delicious .
What made the stay special was the Nepalese staff Pathak with his good explanation and his ability to communicate English with us . That made a difference to the stay .
PS, we arrived by bicycle and the staff were cool about that.
I would like to thank Mr. Pralhad Pathak at the front desk who helped me make calls and spoke on my behalf to the staff of the hotel where I stayed the night before to help me look for my watch which somehow got lost. He was very caring and assisted me to follow up even upon my check-out. Very nice of him. Really appreciate it.
My stay at Baien was a wonderful experience. I stayed at three different ryokans and some other hotels during my 8-day trip to Kyushu this time, and I ranked Baien no.1. I would definitely stay there again next time when I visit Yufuin.
Overall, it was a very nice and relaxing time staying at Baien and we do recommend this ryokan if you come to yufuin.
The resort stay was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed our suite. We booked one of the chalet/lodge suites with western beds and a private hot springs pool in the back. Baien calls these Annex Rooms and I think they have about five of these units, ours was 302. I would highly recommend booking a similar suite.
The chalet was quite large and had western twin beds that were quite comfortable (although very firm). There was a living room with a low table, a heated carpet to sit on, and a small sitting desk. The bathroom was standard size and the private hot tub was out the back of the unit.
The lady who showed us to our room spoke good english and explained the various room features. The room also had a decent English guide printed out for the amenities. The lady sat us down and made us some tea, which was nice, and we told her we wanted dinner at 7pm and breakfast at 8am. When its time for your meal, you walk to the lobby and they bring you to your private tatami room beside the restaurant for your meal, which is already set up on the table. Very easy to do…
The room rate seemed expensive to us, at about $500, but when you factor in two great meals for two people and the privacy of the room and hot tub it actually was pretty reasonable.
Dinner was fabulous, one of the better meals I had in Japan. Probably at least ten courses with some of the usual japanese dishes like sashimi, grilled fish, miso soup, vegetables, plus a small cooker we used to cook some beef and mushrooms. Also included was three small glasses of sake. The same lady was our server and it was a great meal with excellent service. Just push the button when you want the server.
Breakfast was also excellent, you could choose between japanese and western breakfast, we had both and both were very good. Again, several courses.
Regarding the hot springs, Baien has several. Our suite had its own pool, which was quite big (could fit 6-8 people). It was completely private so clothing is optional. It was crystal clear and very hot and we used it at least three times and loved it. The shower is right beside it (outdoor, and maybe a bit chilly in winter).
If you don’t book a room with its own private pool, you have two options. They have two private pool rooms that are for all guests. If one is free, it has a “vacant” sign that you turn over when using it. Both pools have changing room and large pools. If they are both in use, you can wait, or you can use the public bath, one for ladies only, and one for men. These are communal baths and very large, and have great views of the mountains. Again, the website has pics.
Baien is a fair ways from the train station so take a taxi when you arrive. It’s only a five minute drive but would be a 20+ minute walk or more. Taxis are easy to get from the station.
A nice walk is to leave Baien, walk past the parking lot, and turn right and walk along that road, past a nice temple, and then end up at Kinrinko Lake. Only 10-15 minutes away. Then you can walk the main shopping streets towards the train station, which is 1.4 kilometers away.
We liked Yufuin a lot. We took the Yufuin No Mori train from Hakata Station and it was a pleasant, scenic trip. The town is pretty and has lots of interesting shops to visit, as well as a decent Chagall gallery, a museum of old cars, and a museum of Japan life in the 1960’s. Definitely worth an overnight stay.
The grounds and buildings are well maintained and feel newer. The open air family hot springs and male/female hot springs were large with a good view of Mt Yufu and the surrounding hills on a clear day (June is the rainy season so we had mixed results). The staff was extremely courteous and English was not an issue for the two of us who do not speak Japanese. We would highly recommend Baien.
Shop: This has a gift shop. There are many kinds of Yufuin and traditional Japanese souvenirs.
Room: large and neat. Its welcome confectionery is delicious!
Bath: So nice! I could see Mt. Yufu from the open-air bath and the view makes me moved.
Meal: Of course, both breakfast and supper are Japanese dishes. They includes Sashimi (raw fish), grilled beef and chicken, local vegetables and so on. Especially, grilled beef called "Bungogyu", is tender and good. The meals are big enough.
Location: little bit far from the streets of Yufuin but no problem, 2o minutes walk takes you there.
