We had a fantastic stay in one of the "Japanese + Western with Outdoor Bath" rooms in the annex building. The room had both an indoor cypress bath and a beautiful outdoor rock bath (which was the main highlight). The room was huge.

The staff were excellent, helpful and friendly. The kaiseki meal was served in a private dining room and was exceptional.

We were warmly greeted by staff who helped us with our bags and checked us into the hotel room .
We had booked into the twin room . Wow it was huge with a bedroom , dining room as well as a wash basin and toilet . Only letdown was that there was no shower nor bathtub . Another friend had booked the one with private indoor and outdoor onsens and they were beautiful .
This hotel had two private onsens that one could use anytime . You hang a “in use” sign on the door each time you use and it was very beautiful .
The public bath was also unique and picturesque .
Kaiseiki dinner was delicious with wagyu beef .
Breakfast was Japanese style and was also delicious .
What made the stay special was the Nepalese staff Pathak with his good explanation and his ability to communicate English with us . That made a difference to the stay .

Everything about our stay was wonderful - although I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much in my life! The service was friendly and helpful. The rooms were elegant and beautiful. The public areas were stylish and magnificent. The onsen was beautifully presented with the volcano looking above it. And the food! A glorious showcase of Kyushu cuisine for both breakfasts and dinners. Very highly recommended!
PS, we arrived by bicycle and the staff were cool about that.

Stayed in a suite with two single beds which have our own open air bath and an indoor bath as well. The open air bath was just great, very large and beautiful. So relaxing to enjoy after almost three years not being able to visit the country and use onsen. Suite itself is very spacious and the amenities are new. There were however two small windows, one at the living area and the other near the suite's entrance which did not have curtains or blinds, and could be seen from the outside. Otherwise everything was perfect. The ryokan's public bath has an excellent view of Mt. Yufu. Food quality of the Kaiseki dinner was high. There were ample parking spaces for guests' use.

I would like to thank Mr. Pralhad Pathak at the front desk who helped me make calls and spoke on my behalf to the staff of the hotel where I stayed the night before to help me look for my watch which somehow got lost. He was very caring and assisted me to follow up even upon my check-out. Very nice of him. Really appreciate it.

My stay at Baien was a wonderful experience. I stayed at three different ryokans and some other hotels during my 8-day trip to Kyushu this time, and I ranked Baien no.1. I would definitely stay there again next time when I visit Yufuin.

My husband and I did enjoy the stay at this ryokan in Dec. It was our first time in yufuin and it was quite hard when we were deciding where to stay among many great onsen ryokans there. Baien didnt disappoint us. The surrounding of the outdoor onsen is beautiful and the size of the onsen is great. The whole setting of the onsen area, from the walkway through beautiful trees to the entrance of the onsen, the locker area, restroom etc, is wonderful. For the meal, each dish of the dinner and breakfast is nicely presented and most are very delectable, especially the grilled wagyu. There is also happy hour after dinner where different wines are proivded in the lobby. Staff are friendly and promptly offered help when you need them.
Overall, it was a very nice and relaxing time staying at Baien and we do recommend this ryokan if you come to yufuin.

is a modern Ryokan so it could fit or not what are you looking for. The room with private bath is amazing. The food is good and the restaurant is nice and you cam reserve a private cell. The only little problem is the language barrier, because except front desk, no other staff's members speak English. Don't provide pick up at station, but you can easily find a taxi or delivery luggages with a specific service at yufuin info center.

This review is mostly for non-japanese speakers. My wife and I spent one night at Baien ryoken in April. It was booked on their website by my step daughter who speaks japanese, which made it easier to book. The website has limited english although google translate helps, and I am sure that they can correspond in engish via email or fax. The website does have photos of the various units.

The resort stay was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed our suite. We booked one of the chalet/lodge suites with western beds and a private hot springs pool in the back. Baien calls these Annex Rooms and I think they have about five of these units, ours was 302. I would highly recommend booking a similar suite.

The chalet was quite large and had western twin beds that were quite comfortable (although very firm). There was a living room with a low table, a heated carpet to sit on, and a small sitting desk. The bathroom was standard size and the private hot tub was out the back of the unit.

The lady who showed us to our room spoke good english and explained the various room features. The room also had a decent English guide printed out for the amenities. The lady sat us down and made us some tea, which was nice, and we told her we wanted dinner at 7pm and breakfast at 8am. When its time for your meal, you walk to the lobby and they bring you to your private tatami room beside the restaurant for your meal, which is already set up on the table. Very easy to do…

The room rate seemed expensive to us, at about $500, but when you factor in two great meals for two people and the privacy of the room and hot tub it actually was pretty reasonable.
Dinner was fabulous, one of the better meals I had in Japan. Probably at least ten courses with some of the usual japanese dishes like sashimi, grilled fish, miso soup, vegetables, plus a small cooker we used to cook some beef and mushrooms. Also included was three small glasses of sake. The same lady was our server and it was a great meal with excellent service. Just push the button when you want the server.

Breakfast was also excellent, you could choose between japanese and western breakfast, we had both and both were very good. Again, several courses.

Regarding the hot springs, Baien has several. Our suite had its own pool, which was quite big (could fit 6-8 people). It was completely private so clothing is optional. It was crystal clear and very hot and we used it at least three times and loved it. The shower is right beside it (outdoor, and maybe a bit chilly in winter).
If you don’t book a room with its own private pool, you have two options. They have two private pool rooms that are for all guests. If one is free, it has a “vacant” sign that you turn over when using it. Both pools have changing room and large pools. If they are both in use, you can wait, or you can use the public bath, one for ladies only, and one for men. These are communal baths and very large, and have great views of the mountains. Again, the website has pics.
Baien is a fair ways from the train station so take a taxi when you arrive. It’s only a five minute drive but would be a 20+ minute walk or more. Taxis are easy to get from the station.

A nice walk is to leave Baien, walk past the parking lot, and turn right and walk along that road, past a nice temple, and then end up at Kinrinko Lake. Only 10-15 minutes away. Then you can walk the main shopping streets towards the train station, which is 1.4 kilometers away.
We liked Yufuin a lot. We took the Yufuin No Mori train from Hakata Station and it was a pleasant, scenic trip. The town is pretty and has lots of interesting shops to visit, as well as a decent Chagall gallery, a museum of old cars, and a museum of Japan life in the 1960’s. Definitely worth an overnight stay.

My wife and I stayed here one night and feel it was the most exclusive and customer oriented place we have stayed. The hotel is close to the base of the mountains, tucked against the forest and was very quiet and relaxing. We stayed in one of the separate three-room cottages with private hot spring which far surpassed our expectations as our reservation was for a "western style room with outdoor shower". As described, there was no indoor shower, only the outdoor shower next to the private hot spring. We were shown to our room by an English speaking host who served us tea in the cottage and scheduled the hotel meal times and explained services to us. Our dinner was in a private room next to the main dining room with the same host serving and explaining what each course contained.

The grounds and buildings are well maintained and feel newer. The open air family hot springs and male/female hot springs were large with a good view of Mt Yufu and the surrounding hills on a clear day (June is the rainy season so we had mixed results). The staff was extremely courteous and English was not an issue for the two of us who do not speak Japanese. We would highly recommend Baien.

Building: As I said in the title, this is traditional Japanese-style but not old. Its cleanness and excellent hotel facilities make you comfortable.

Shop: This has a gift shop. There are many kinds of Yufuin and traditional Japanese souvenirs.

Room: large and neat. Its welcome confectionery is delicious!
Bath: So nice! I could see Mt. Yufu from the open-air bath and the view makes me moved.

Meal: Of course, both breakfast and supper are Japanese dishes. They includes Sashimi (raw fish), grilled beef and chicken, local vegetables and so on. Especially, grilled beef called "Bungogyu", is tender and good. The meals are big enough.

Location: little bit far from the streets of Yufuin but no problem, 2o minutes walk takes you there.

From the moment we arrived, the attentive staff was flawlessly gracious and professional. Our room was very large and nicely appointed. The private baths were available on both occasions that we visited them. The separate male and female baths offer excellent views of the surrounding hills. The meals are very generous and interesting. The property's gardens are beautiful. The walk into town is easy. We were not inconvenienced by not having a shower or bath in our room, though it would have been a nice option.
