This place should remain a secret. It has only 12 villas, all over 100 years old, originally located near Tokyo but moved here recently. It is western style with spacious, modern rooms with high ceilings, full amenities and your own onsen. Service was excellent in the Japanese tradition. When we arrived in our little Toyota, were were greeted by about...

Visited June 2015. The hot spring resort is located slightly outside the town center, but the resort provides with transport to the town if the guest requires and they will pick you up from the station if you arrive by train. The whole resort is like a piece of art, so tastefully built with nice texture from the very old...

We were able to stay at Sanso Murata for one night. We were able to get the Showa Besso. Basically, it was a huge Showa-era built house that was brought from Tohoku region. It really did seem like a waste for us since this house could have fit easily 5-6 guest, but there were only two of us. Once we...

Mortgage your home and spend one night to experience the best onsen ever. The room, service and food are without doubt the best I have ever experienced. This is not a cheap Ryokan but if you can justify the expense treat yourself to real luxury. All the villas have a private onsen and offer either western beds or Japanese tatami...

Ryokan is built inside the mountain. We only stay one night. 3 persons staying at a 8 pax guest house - the house is converted from a 100 years+ farm house. Very luxury but it was the only one left for that night. Has its own Japanese coal burning fire place and also own private hot spring. Delicious diner and...

This ryokan is one of the most beautiful I've been to (I've been to just 3 in all) nestled in a little village in the mountains. We stayed in a traditional cottage with all the modern amenities including a Bose player and heated toilet seats. The cottage was beautifully appointed with high ceilings and polished beams. The staff was professional...

Sanso Murata is one of the best Onsen Ryokan in Japan. They have a number of villas, from traditional Japanese to modern design. Kaiseki served is generous, and the selection of Sake to go with the meal is superb. Lots of local food being used. All onsens are private, and one can choose from sleeping in the traditional Japanese tatami...

The service, room, food and ambiance were all outstanding. We have been to Japan a number of times and this may be the best ryokan we have stayed in. There is a short hike down the hill to the local lake and shopping areas. Very easy access by train.

My friend stayed here twice and highly recommended this ryokan, so I went out of my way to travel to Fukuoka and transit to Oita, then Yufuin. This ryokan makes Yufuin worth traveling to. The hospitality, service, food, and accommodation have all exceeded my expectations. I have stayed in a few ryokans across Japan and must say Sanso Murata is...

We were a group of 12 (all adults) so we took one of their largest villas, Meiji, and a smaller one, Showa, right across the street. Both villas were close to the main building. We were there only two nights, which I felt too brief. The villas, all over 100 years old, were transported from north Tokyo and meticulously reconstructed,...
