Encouraged by the reviews I read on TripAdvisor , I picked this ryokan as a stopover after visiting Yunomine Onsen . Travelling in winter when the sun sets at 4.45pm, I was worried about transport back on the dark mountainous roads. For me, it wasn't a pleasant experience at all. To be fair, the proprietress tried to be helpful when...

The "Outdoor Osen" is actually part of the river sitting next to the ryokan Just by surrounding a pool of water by river stones, then the underground heat would then heat up your pool of water - forming the "Osen" There are 1 -2 pool ready for you to jump in, but otherwise, the Ryokan got shovel for you to...

The Kameya Ryokan is very much a bit of history, an old-style ryokan that seems to be sitting somewhere between the 15th century and late 1960s Japan. The building is older, a little worn and in need of some repair, but the grace and charm are so very old school. The service is superb, exactly how you might imagine the...

Slightly over 2 hrs drive from Wakayama city. Lovely traditional ryokan by the river. Enjoy hot baths within or public bath at the river. Owner offers a warm welcome and no issue for English speaking foreigners. Would definitely recommend for a relaxed getaway.

We had two wonderful nights at this ryokan. The people here know some english and are very helpful. They explain the food and traditions as good as they can. I really can recommend this ryokan to foreigners. In the night you sleep traditionally on a futon, a thin mattrress on the floor which you pack away everey morning in a...

We were probably the only guest in the ryokan that night. While we were still parking our car, the landlady came out to receive us and help with our luggage. She didn't speak much English but tried to explain things - she even looked for the names of the fish served at the dinner and wrote them down on a...

We stayed here for 1 night after finishing a few days' hike of the Kumano Kodo. It was perfect for relaxing after a long day's walk. We had tea in our lovely tatami room on arrival, and headed out to the outdoor onsen in the river which is just outside the ryokan. The dinner to which we returned was a...

We didn't actually stay at this Ryoken but we went in a couple of times to relax in the dining area. It was a lovely place, the owner was very friendly and we enjoyed chatting to him! We would like to thank him for helping to make our stay even more enjoyable. Thank you!

We (2 adults, a 4 year old and a 7 year old) stayed here for three nights and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The location is beautiful, right next to the river and outdoor "bath"s (google Kawayu Onsen to see how these outdoor "bath"s work!). The ryokan has a nice old feeling about it and is very characterful. I don't think...
