We had a very pleasant tript o Ko Lipe, love it and will definitely go back.
Stayed at Castaway and love it too, professional friendly staffs (both foreign and local staffs).

What we find in Ko Lipe is that the Thai people aren't that ready to rip you off as much as the people in Phuket. Food is not cheap as the island is far away from civilisation but the Thai people still have some authenticity and are as genuine as they can be.

A long walk to find the Jack's Jungle restaurant which was much recommended from a friend who frequent to Lipe was a disappointment. Starting from the food itself, i felt it was a bit westernised. The food tastes like it was cooked from the thai cook book, lacking originality. The spiciness described by the host was not as what I had expected. I am an Asian and the "very spicy" described by the "British" (?) host was not spicy at all to my standard. I think I have had much better food at the Hantale or the Mountain Resort restaurant with a more reasonable price.

What makes this review extremely difficult to write was the difference between the Thai crew and the foreign person in this restaurant. I feel the Thai crew being so friendly and personal that I could/should not write anything bad about this place but the one and only foreign person in this restaurant spoilt the whole experience.

He rudely told us that the premises selling wine and therefore we are not allowed to drink our own wine (brought from Langkawi) and that it's their business to sell wine while we were happy to pay corkage because the only wine they supply do not meet our need. I felt it could be dealt more professionally. After all it was only 200baht for the corkage. We felt being scrutinised maybe because we had some Asian friends among us.

Set aside the food quality, I feel compelled for the Thai (including Jack) behind the kitchen. They were really apologetic to the situation but could not do much. Personally i feel this is the most racist experience on this island where Thai people had no say of their own and had to be in controlled by a foreign person.

I hope this place continues to have enough business to support the local community but at the same time, i wish this specific "foreign" fellow disappears from the scene as soon as possible.

While we thoroughly enjoyed the food and the ambiance, we can't say our experience was complete.

We didn't realise that a reservation was required (6 adults, 1 child) and the restaurant was full when we arrived. Although we were willing to wait, the Caucasian "co-owner" made great effort to tell us that we would not get a table. Lucky for us, another table left and we were reluctantly taken to our table. To add to the disappointing start, when we asked him to make a recommendation on the food, the reply was prompt and cold - "everything is recommended".

There were 4 more similar incidences throughout the night with this feller and we were not impressed by this attitude. Very unprofessional.

On the flip side, Jack and his staff were terrific.

We have just left jacks and are a bit tearful. We had a wonderful time. The jungle is 5mins walk from everything but is slightly hidden in the trees up a slight hill for privacy. The cabins are first class: comfortable and clean. The outdoor bathroom is clean and so much fun. Jack and his wife (her name is pronounced Di) are wonderful hosts and Di's food is pheonominal and by far the best on the island. There is no reason to stay at any other place on Koh Lipe. We will be back for sure. Thank you for making our stay so truly special. We miss you all already!

Although Jack's Jungle is less than a 10 min walk from the main trawl, it might as well be an hour away. When you arrive by boat at Pattaya beach, speak to the staff at the travel shop on Walking Street. They'll call Jack's for you and transport will arrive in a couple of minutes. We stayed in a bamboo bungalow for 3 nights which was perfect for our needs and had, quite possibly, the best mosquito net we have ever encountered (closely woven soft cotton which covered the bed completely, leaving no possibility of gaps appearing when the fan was on during the night ). Mosquitoes are a problem here but they are large (so easily spotted) and a bit dozy. However, they are around 24h a day - so deet is essential. The partially-covered outdoor bathroom was lovely but, as we learnt to our cost, if you leave anything in there during a tropical thunderstorm it will be soaked through. Breakfast was really good (try the pad thai) and, although we only ate one lunch and one dinner here, the food was excellent and cooked exactly as requested.Spicy. Portions were also generous. There is no WiFi or Broadband access at Jack's, but there are plenty of cafes and bars on Walking Street with hotspots. (The mother of all thunderstorms we experienced had been preceeded by an incredible electrical storm - so internet connections were a bit hit and miss during our stay). Laundry was also very reasonable, at 60 Baht per kilo.
We also have to say many thanks to the very kind and helpful Anna (who hails from our part of the world). Her first-aid skills proved extremely useful when my husband was bitten by a stray dog on our first evening there (discussed on the Koh Lipe Forum). A visit to "Home Bar" close to Jack's Jungle is a must as well. The owner is a very pleasant and unbelievably laid back individual (but don't be fooled - he's completely on the ball) and is assisted by a delightful girl called June. It's a complete chill-out experience and, as with much of Southern Thailand, Bob Marley is an obsession. Sunrise beach is a short walk away with a long stretch of white coral sand plus beautifully clear and warm water (quite strong currents too in places - be aware if you have small children). A number of resorts back onto the beach so it's easy to pick up lunch or a cold drink. The restaurants in town serve a really good range of the freshest seafood each evening which you choose yourself before it's cooked on the bbq. All things considered, Koh Lipe was not as developed as we had feared it might be - possibly helped by a very limited number of paved roads (only built about 3 years ago). So, would we go back and would we stay at Jack's Jungle? Absolutely yes!!

We did not stay at Jack's however discovered the restaurant by accident walking to the beach so decided to eat there. Setting was lovely and staff friendly. We were surprised and a little refreshed to see english speaking staff. However our hopes were dashed within minutes. My partner and i ordered the Jack's "famous" chicken. The restaurant is quite dark and very hard to see what you are eating. 3/4 way through eating a drumstick my partner comments on the chicken tasting strange and looking funny. I shine my torch on the chicken and to our horror it was completely raw inside. Not mildly undercooked - completely raw! My partner nearly vomited on the spot however dashed to the toilet to try and get it out of his system. Staff were embarrassed when we addressed this. By this time we no longer wanted to eat there and just wanted to leave. They even had the gall to try and charge us for the 2 small drinks we had. Needless to say we did not pay. Luckily neither of us got sick in the end but the following 24 hours were very stressful worrying if we would especially on an island with limited medical facilities. Do not eat here. It was obvious our waitress was embarrassed but they could have done more to assist and sort the situation which they did not. Not recommended at all. Please note i can only rate the restaurant - my review is not for the accommodation at all.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights, having just staying in nearby accommodation Serendipity resort. A night there cost £142 a night, compared to Jacks Jungle at £32. Our Serendipity taxi driver jested with the staff at Jacks Jungle regarding our change of scenery, however, our experience at Jacks Jungle was far superior.

Staff at Jacks Jungle have the ambience spot on. Although mainly a sand island, the accommodation sits centrally near to a dense area of tree’s and plants. The huts are dotted throughout the wooded area to the rear of the restaurant/bar area. The huts are basic but clean and comfortable. The bedroom area is equipped with mosquito net and a small fan, although the fan is pretty useless as it’s fitted up high to the wall. The toilet and shower are located outside to the rear, so expect an alfresco lavatory/showing experience with cold water only. The hut also has a hammock to the front of the property, however, during our stay, a new bungalow complex was being built over the fence and the noise was unbearable throughout the day but we spent most of the day on the stunning beaches and understand that this problem was out of Jack’s Jungles hands.

The food in the restaurant is also very good and priced reasonably.

On our last day, they taxied us to the ferry port for free as we were guests. Serendipity charged us 100bht during our departure from their accommodation…says it all.

Just because it was more expensive, doesn’t mean the experience was superior. You cant put a price on ambience, character and charm.

If you’re on a budget and not expecting luxury, Jack’s jungle is a good option.

Jack's Jungle is fantastic. Bungalows spotted throughout jungle in central Koh Lipe. I spent three nights there in The White Room, bungalow number 1. The room was clean, comfortable and relaxing. The bathroom is attached outdoor but clean and fine - watch out for frogs in the shower bamboo tube and toilet. It is a short walk to each of the three main beaches of the island. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Jack himself is a very friendly bloke so take the chance to have a chat. The restaurant food is very tasty. I'd easily stay again.

Cosy bungalows, restaurant and a friendly welcoming staff. The bungalow was comfortable with a small porch without a reiling, something for families with small children to be aware of but it didn't bother us. We travelled with our 3 year old son and there were never any problems. Lots of caterpillars, frogs and snails for him to explore. Mosquitos were ever present but they provide you with both mosquito net over the bed and mosquito-spirals (or whatever they're called). Bring or buy repellent though.

If your're travelling with small children don't bother taking a stroller with you. The roads on the island are not stroller friendly, specially after it's been raining. But Sunset beach is only a few minutes away and everything on the island is within walking distance. In fact one og the great things about Jack's jungle is that you get a sense of privacy and relaxation. It was great for our little family but would also be wonderful for a romantic couples vacation.

We started our 3 week Thailand trip in Koh Lipe in early Feb 2012 and despite staying in more expensive and more luxurious accommodation later on during the trip, Jacks was without a doubt our favourite.

Part of me wants to keep Jacks a secret - the other part of me wants to tell the world, seeing as I'm not a selfish guy the latter won (this is the first review I've ever written) and even whilst travelling around Thailand we highly recommended Jacks to everyone we met.

Why is Jacks special - the service is exceptional, Jack and all the staff were warm, friendly and helpful and the bungalows (we had a standard bamboo one) although a little more back to basics had a wonderful charm, comfy bed and great mosquito net. Something has to be said for shooting the frogs off the loo with the bum gun - haven't laughed that much ever - classic!!

Although not on the beach this is actually one of the benefits as the bungalows are quieter, being away from the noisy longboats and you're within an easy 5-15 mins walk of some of the best parts of the island - whether the funky Boom Boom Bar on Sunset Beach, Walking Street or even Mia Luna for those that like a late night party.

The food at Jacks, needs to be mentioned separately as this was quite simply out of this world!! Despite eating A LOT of good Thai food throughout out trip, nothing ever compared again to the way they did it - I'm salivating just at the thought.

A special mention and thank you to the lovely lady at Jacks (my life saver!) who gave us the cooling powder after I stupidly got SO burnt my back started to blister - for those that go on a snorkelling trip or decide to spend half the day in the water with your back facing the sun - wear a t-shirt/rash vest it will save weeks of pain! If you do find yourself in my situation use Aloe Vera (100% and with as little fragrance as possible) or if you can find it cooling powder with menthol even better - I'm never going on holiday again without some.

Anyway thank you, thank you, thank you to you all - We'll be definitely back.

Toby & Aggy

As we wanted to stay a bit long in Koh Lipe as my boyfriend wanted to take a scuba diving course and that we wanted to have a variety in the island besides beaches, Jack's Jungle is the right answer for us. We, especially me, love this place because:

1. Jack and his staff are devoted and have warm serviced-mind. Jack often chats with us and all guests like friends gather together.
2. Kluay, a male staff with long hair and dark skin, always goes around with smiles and offers us a free ride with a golf car to anywhere on Koh Lipe.
3. Music played at the restaurant is well-picked by staff, not random or from certain albums or hits.
4. Food is great though not all the menu is real authentic Thai food.
5. A well-designed platform made by woods, decorated by green plants and shells, and 3 dogs really give us a warm atmosphere.
6. We stayed at Bamboo House and White House. Though there were plenty of mosquitoes in Bamboo House, later on we figured out that we should lit the mosquitoes coil right after entering the room and release the mosquito net over the bed just before sleeping.

But it is about 5-10 minutes walking to the closet beach (Sunset Beach), so it might not be an option for those who want to wake up with wave sound.
