The hotel is dirty and run down. The whole place was freezing cold I had to put the hairdryer on to warm my bedroom as the radiator wasn't good enough. The bar area had no heating other than the log fire which only had 2 smouldering logs on the go and no other logs to available to relight it. Everyone was sitting in the bar area wearing coats complaining about how cold it was but the staff thought it was funny and just agreed that it was cold. The response was you want to try working here. The restaurant was empty but we still had to book a table we were the only ones in there just our table so why we had to book is beyond me. The food was tepid warm and quite tasteless, not made within the restaurant but I suspect brought in and warmed up. This certainly is no chef.
The breakfast was the same affair, only 2 off us in the freezing restaurant. The lights werent even turned on looked shut, no food on display just 2 cereals, no fruit no pastrys, no healthy options etc. Literally just to cereals and only the dregs left in the decanter. No menus on the tables just a young girl who said sit where you like and what breakfast do you want. we just said full english as that is what your option is. It came out luke warm 1 egg 2 bacon 1 sausage 1 toast beans and tinned mushrooms. I was never asked if the food is ok , never saw the girl/waitress again ( who was also the receptionist). The tea is from a flask. This place is the awful!!
I have stayed here a few years back when it was much better. This place has no atmosphere and there is certainly no love for it from the owners and staff and this shows due to the lack of care and quality of staff.
Terrible place to stay will never return but will book into other hotels in the area.
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL

Definitely a place priced high but with bland pub grub and in need of improvement.
Waited an hour for meals to arrive to which were bland, dry and pasta claggy. All meals topped with a couple of handfuls of spring onions- trying to achieve the fancy look but it was very over the top and tasted awful.
Staff attention was focused on customers buying prosecco and share boards, despite only 3 tables in service.
When given honest review on how the meals were, no apologies or discount were offered.
Wouldn’t recommend, doesn’t come out looking like the pictures on their website!

Booked a 2 night break for Valentines. We also booking the special Valentine meal.
Nothing special about it. Meal very poor value for money, definitely not worth £70
Room freezing cold for majority of our stay as heating cutting off all the time, too cold to shower in the morning. All in all very dissapointing

My partner and I recently enjoyed a delightful one night stay at this lovely hotel.

The hotel is entered from the rear of the building and presents a magnificent impression befitting it's long history, dating from before the great fire of London.

We were greeted by friendly staff who advised that our room was in the annex, a beautifully converted stable block with plenty of parking right outside.

The quality of the conversion of this stable block was immediately evident as soon as we got to our room on the first floor.

The room was well appointed and spotlessly clean as was the en-suite bathroom.

The fanlight window was open for ventilation but once closed the small radiator soon had the room toasty warm even on a cold March day.

We had booked dinner, bed and breakfast so made our way to the dining room.

The dining room was bright and fresh although on this Sunday evening there was only one other table seated.

I had very tasty chicken wings to start followed by a very nice plate of slow roasted pork with assorted vegetables.

My partner chose the lasagne as her main course and strawberry and black pepper pavlova for desert, both deemed very tasty.

Drinks were very reasonably priced.

We found our bed to be extremely comfortable with fresh crisp linen sheets and a comfortable duvet. A very good nights sleep was had.

Breakfast was excellent. We were able to choose from a selection of juices, cereals, tea, coffee etc on a self serve basis. We both ordered the full English breakfast from our waiter and were not disappointed. All the usuals, piping hot and very tasty, the sausage being particularly good.

Overall a very enjoyable stay and good value for money.

On arrival and asking about breakfast, we were told it had to be paid 'upfront' for the entire stay. We later noted that we had been charged at a higher rate than shown in the hotel documentation in the room. Charges incurred each day for drinks/evening meal were taken from our bank account each night, but no bill was given to check & sign off as being correct prior to the money being taken. On departure an itemised bill could not be produced for us to check the amount taken each night was correct. The room in the stable block was of a poor standard with cobwebs, a stained toilet, ripped bed throw, electric socket not secured to the wall, cable trucking hanging from a wall, frayed room carpet made up of two pieces, tv remote did not work, poor daily room cleaning, not enough hangers for two peoples clothes and an empty soap dispenser. On a positive note, the staff we met in the bar and lounge area were pleasant and the food was of an acceptable standard.

Was travelling and staying 4 nights due to work.

Upon arrival thr Hotel looks beautiful was extremely impressed. The staff was lovely and welcoming.

However, we are working 15 hour days. Due to an issue with the room it meant it took 'pure graft' to simply run and empty a bath adding 3 additional hours to our work day. There was also no drain hole on the bath alongside a toiletry shelf, said shelf was wonky throwing all of our personal items for higene literally down the toilet.

Following this I finally complained. God bless the staff so apologetic for the errors of management of which they was clearly always blamed for. Upon inspecting the room he made a personal call to the owner.

He stated. "They can have a complimentary bottle of wine" staying here for four nights adding hours to a work day per person.

What a selfish guy. It has to be a guy because no woman would ever throw their work team under a bus. Only a man dead set on his money would not care for adding 4 additional hours onto that work day.

We had an alternative option of changing rooms for 1 night. However we would have to go back tomorrow as their fully booked.

Personally I would avoid at all costs. Treated this way on a work stay is horrendous adding long hours to a work day.

This treatment on a personal holiday I would be mortified.

Also the food. Absolutely awful. However, personal preference. Personally I feel the standard of food represents the owner. Its cheap. The meat is beyond bad. A stu served with mash and veg was so dry to the point it was left.

I'd give 0 stars if not for the lovely staff.

Where do I start when we went up intos my room we went down a narrow corridor which I nearly fell over because there was like lumps and bumps in the carpet and thien we went into our room and it smelt of piss there was stains on the carpet no towels in the bathroom and it was not a very nice r oom. I did go downstairs and say where is mry fourposter bedside paid for and the gentleman said that is the only room available, and I said that I had booked a month before and the lady said to me that that was the only room available so I took it for £149. I had said to him that I’d nearly fell over as I was going to my room because there was a step which wasn’t noticed, and then when I walked out my room, I feel flat on my face. There should be a caution sign up, and it was not a very nice day. The bed was hard, we didn’t have any towels, stains on the carpet and none of the plug sockets worked. Will not be returning I am a manager from another pub restaurant and ours is a 5* rating and the rooms are a lot better than them. I was told by someone of the party that it was good that I didn’t stay for breakfast it was terrible. I think you should look at your building and make changes urgently.
No thanks Mrs BYFORD. I will not be recommending this place to anyone.

The room was clean the bedding and towels lovely, the show could have been better, not a lot of pressure from the electric shower.

Breakfast was very basic, if you had just gone for the continental at almost £8.00 you would have had just some toast, cereal boxes and fresh fruit - steep price for just that no other choices like cheese or meats or fruit salad, breads or croissants or yoghurts. Cooked breakfast was ok nothing special.

Building refurbished in places and nicely done, more could be made of a beer garden and some TLC outside too.

The food in the restaurant was mixed, the steak and ale pie was scrummy, but there was a very limited menu. Staff need hospitality training badly, very polite but did not know what they were doing and the place was deathly quiet with only 4 of us dining in a Saturday night.

This place needs good knowledgeable management as could be so much better, and the restaurant the menu is very poor indeed. Great receptionist, multiskilling as waiting and bar, but other staff just need a guiding hand and some training. Get a better menu with quality ingredients, and a chef who knows what they are doing, and this place will sing!

Hotel is lovely, historic and interesting.
We were told breakfast was 7.30 to 10.00 but when we arrived at 9.45 nobody in kitchen. Another couple arrived and finally found a member of staff. Chef had gone early.Breakfast till 9 only.
We asked for our money back and the young man on desk told me I was mistaken about the time we arrived. In other words I was lying.

We had food here for a work get together. I was really impressed with the service. The staff were very polite and came out calling each person's name to make sure they got the correct food. They even listened to my request for no BBQ sauce, which never happens at large gatherings, so thank you! The food was lovely - well cooked and tasty. My only criticism is more chips! I will definitely come again!
