Detailed Reviews
My wife and I went to Costa Rica to get married and we stayed we chose La Mansion based on the reviews from this website. The property is amazing and their staff made our stay memorable. Even their lowest priced rooms are gorgeous, while their upscale rooms (we got upgraded for our wedding night to Royal Cottage) are breathtaking. Even better, you can use their free canoes to float on Lake Arenal and enjoy the views or rent their horses to explore the surroundings. During our Costa Rica visit we stayed at Hotel Parador, Finca Valverde and Hotel Aranjuez but La Mansion was by far the best.
Looking forward to visit again and maybe retire in Costa Rica...

We are a family of 5 (children ages 8, 7, and 2) who recently spent two nights at La Mansion Inn/Arenal. The service (particularly the hotel manager, Joey) and cottages are spectacular. Everything far exceeded my one complaint which was the time it takes to get to the activities we did (hanging bridges and volcano hike). We also rode the hotel's horses and went to the botanical gardens nearby.

this hotel is excellent. the bathrooms were a bit small but the views, the staff and the food are excellent. their breakfasts are wonderful. the staff directed us to eco termales, hot springs, another excellent choice rather than the resort style of tabacon. the grounds are beautiful and all the recommendations of the staff were very good. i would return here in a heart beat.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!
There are so many other options that are far better than this one. It's distance from the attractions are the least of your problems. The "staff" that others refer to are two people... one good one bad. Hopefully you wont get stuck with the co-owner who is a mess. She was spacy and forgot to put us down for dinner one night- and so we never ate! the rooms musty and damp and over run with aunts (both our rooms we made a change halfway in to our stay.)
We wanted to go on additional tours - tours that are from the hotel fishing horseback riding but we couldn't find any staff members to book the trip. It really was the most horrible place to stay and try to relax. My one dinner i ate so salty I couldn't swallow it... The pool filter not working so a refeshing dip was with tons of dead bugs and lawn clippings! AGAIN there are so many new options in the area I'd skip this one at all costs!
aND I WOULDN'T HAVE WRITTEN THIS IF I HAD GOTTEN A SIMPLE SORRY FROM THE MANAGEMENT INSTEAD THEY BLEW MY COMPLAINTS OFF!

My fiance and I just spent two night at la mansion. It was a perfect low maintance, beautiful grounds hotel with character and friendly, warm good service. Our room was beautiful and the view was breathtaking. La Mansion and its staff have a wonderful charm about it, that just lead you into the laid back, Tico lifestyle. The breakfast was outstanding for a free hotel breakfast, including maid to order eggs-pancakes-french toast, etc. The service was wonderful, and Rufa and Figaro (the two dogs) are just sweeties.
The only thing keeping this from being a 5-star experience was that the bathrooms need to be larger. Otherwise, this was a wonderful place to spend two days and are favorite hotel on the trip (we also stayed at Xandari and the Marriott Los Suenos).
Thank you Joey!

Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom149 contributions151 helpful votesI struggle to understand many of the reviews for this place. I feel we must have stayed somewhere else!!
It is very quiet (and I say that in a positive way) with delightful views over the lake. But note you are over 20km from the volcano and cannot see it from the hotel, so no nice views of a glowing rim at night from the hotel.
My big issues with the place are:
1. The rooms are very old fashioned, dank and smell musty. I have doubts about the cleanliness, but the lighting was too poor to tell how dirty it was.
2. The staff were generally unhelpful and unwelcoming. There was virtually no information on the things to do in the locality. The restaurant staff were at best amateur, and seemed to be the owners' friends. We nearly did not get our dessert one evening becuase the girl who was serving us decided it was time for her to go home!
3. Food was expensive for what it was, and given the distance from town, you have very little option but to eat there. We went to a Swiss hotel up the road one evening, much cheaper, more friendly but we were the only ones in there. And the hippy shack next door to La Mansion does no more than snacks.
4. The swimming pool and jacuzzi were unheated, and therefore pretty well unusable.
This place might have been nice when it was first built, but that was probably 20 years ago. It now needs major renovation to get it anywhere near an acceptable standard.
PS There is a fair amount of comment about driving on the local roads. They have been substantially improved in 2007, and driving to La Fortuna or to Nueva Arenal is now very easy, even at night.

We spent 3 nights at La Mansion Arenal. Stayed in the Queens Cottage which was beautiful and incredibly roomy for a family of five. There were 2 bedrooms, both very nicely painted and decorated along with one long bathroom that had 2 of everything, shower, sink and toilet. The view from the porch was outstanding. Beautiful flowers in the foreground with the lake in the distance. The dining room, food, and service were splendid, as was all of the help we recieved from Joey and Leta. They went above and beyond to make sure our time with them was not only positive, but wonderfully memorable. The drive to La Mansion from the La Fortuna area was not a problem, day or night. We have wonderful memories from our time at La Mansion and hope to return sometime soon.

We were three adults and two young children (5 and 4) who were arriving from three glorious nights at the Peace Lodge at La Paz. I had decided to upgrade to the "Queen" cottage for more room ($480 a night). While some might equate (i) no air conditioning in the back room, (ii) rebar sticking out of the steps or (iii) barb wire less than 50 yards from the front door (presumably to keep the wild life and locals from meandering over from the road which was 150 yards off the back door) as "quaint" and secluded, so be it. There was no room phone in case of emergency and that was also deemed a problem. The fact that Fodors didn't even review the Hotel should have been a giveaway.
My wife and her sister refused to stay.
While some may consider this hotel "a great romantic getaway", in our view, it did not live up to the "hype" from its website.
We ended up staying at Montana de Fuego and salvaged our stay at Arenal.

I normally only leave reviews when a hotel is either truly exceptional, or truly terrible. La Mansion is neither... however, we felt the multiple 5-star reviews that led us to stay here were unjustified. In our opinion, it’s definitely not worthy of such amazing reviews.
Let’s start with the PRO’s:
- Views: every room has beautiful views of the lake and the volcano, with private terraces.
- Service: all the staff we encountered were very good. Friendly and helpful, and all spoke good English.
- Breakfast: free breakfast was very good, lots of choice and good quality.
Now on to the CON’s:
- Rooms: very dated and run-down, not very well cleaned, and lacking basic amenities like a hairdryer or iron. WiFi was slow and spotty at best. There were a lot of bugs in the room... which is to be expected to some extent in the tropics, but there were many ants and mosquitos throughout the room during our entire stay. (This was not a problem at any of the other similar hotels we stayed at in CR.) Our biggest complaint, though, was the bed — it was ancient, hard-as-a-rock, and way past it’s expiry date. Terribly uncomfortable.
- Location: don’t be fooled into thinking this is close to Arenal or really anything. It’s only 30 mins to the Arenal National Park, but there dozens of other hotels much closer to both attractions and restaurants/town. This hotel is about 15 minutes from a small town (Nuevo Arenal) with a few restaurants, but 30-40 mins to La Fortuna (main town with many restaurants and shops). There is nothing of note at all within a 10 minute drive (so you absolutely must have a car to stay here) and certainly nothing walkable. It’s also not lakefront, it just has a view of the lake.
- Noise: we were kept awake most of the night by the dozens of birds and the nearby road, even though we both wore earplugs. The birds are not the hotel’s fault, but the room has zero soundproofing and it was noisy all night.
- Hot water: we had no hot water in the morning for a shower. None. We ran the shower for at least 10 minutes and it was always ice cold.
This certainly isn’t the worst hotel in the world, but we absolutely wouldn’t recommend it. After staying at another much better nearby hotel closer to attractions for a cheaper rate, La Mansion felt like poor value as well.

On January 17, 2015 my wife and I was at La Mansion Inn Arenal. It is a hotel for over 20 years old with their Old beds, old sheets, old furniture, old bathroom, in the other hand the structure is usually dirty and with excess of cobwebs. The internet does not have good stability and has poor bandwidth.
The Cable TV was not working so I asked for help to staff for review. Fifteen minutes later came the owner of the hotel, drunk and upset. After reviewing the problem the owner can reach the TV channel menu, I asked to seek Discovery Channel and He can tune Discovery kids only. Mr Leo (the owner) became aggressive, he said He only had offered like 10 channels and the HD did not work! I thought We were going to give blows (because the disrespect of the owner, Mr Leo, with the customer, me!). At that time, so our best option was to leave from the hotel, were 9:40 pm (We need to find another place at that time!).
Mr Leo (owner and manager) has no manners and He think a problem of his old hotel can be solved aggressively. The truth, the old structure is not worth the price they charge per night so I would not recommend anyone, least whether to withstand constant Mr Leo drunken condition.

Response from southwestwind, Owner at Hotel La Mansion Inn Arenal
Responded 26 Jan 2015
If the hotel was like you describe it, so why did you come back? You lodged in the same villa on September 12-13, 2014. Our 2 year old SHELTHER mattresses are of the highest orthopedic quality. And we renew every year the 400 threats sheets. And this time you did not even use the bed. We had indeed problems with the SKY satellite TV as it was raining. I could not get Discovery channel, but why did you not did not accept all the other TV channels which were working? SKY TV offers normally more than 100 TV channels, so why being obstinate with the Discovery Channel? Drunk? Please, it was 9:30 PM and I had 2 glasses of wine and I had my dinner when the staff called me. But I did try to help you out. And as you did not get satisfaction, everything is bad. Who do we have to blame?
