Detailed Reviews
Joy is infectious when other guests are swapping fishing stories over a selection of the day’s catch for dinner. Mud crabs, barramundi and numerous other fish were served in sumptuous platters every night.
One morning local guides James and Lenny took us out fishing, passing sandy beach, mangroves and estuaries. Before the heat set in, we stopped at a shady area on a pristine sandy beach where James showed us how to cook our mud crabs and fish over a fire.
Clearwater Island Lodge is a wonderful place to stay, is clean and comfortable in a wilderness setting. Rooms are air-conditioned but I liked to relax in the spacious living room with TV, fans, couches and an array of photos, sculptures, paintings, and Tiwi treasures. A coffee machine offers quality coffee at any time of the day and a cold beer is a treat in the late afternoon. Kerri and Linton are generous and natural hosts; they put their heart into everything they do. Apart from the infamous fishing attractions, unparalleled sunsets and birthplace of AFL champions; Pirlangimpi is home to the wonderful artists of the Munupi Arts Centre. Thank you especially to Paulina, Francesca, Carol, Bernadette, Delores, Theresa, Josephine, Donna, Simplicia and Ossie for being so welcoming.
Be sure to cover up to be cool. Bring light long-sleeved shirts and pants for sun protection during the day and for comfort on warm nights in the open living areas.

Was lucky enough to spend another 3 days at Clearwater Island Lodge. What an experience! Had a warm welcome from host Kerri followed by an delicious meal of fresh Barramundi, stir fry and salad. The fishing was excellent (as always) and our guide Lynton has the gift of putting us on fish with ease, he also gave me some invaluable tips about how and where to present lures for each of the targeted fish.
Cannot wait to get back there and make more memories! 10/10

It was a great stay at the lodge. The view from the dining area and the backyard is just incomparable to anywhere. The food was very nice and generous size. We stayed as a group for four nights and no complains. The staff were helpful in getting from the airport and whenever we needed the lift. Rooms are decent size, not fancy but nice to stay. Thanks, Kerry and Clinton.

This much-anticipated trip turned out to be very disappointing for a number of reasons. It was the first visit for my wife and I to a barra fishing lodge in the top end. We did not receive any communication or help from the lodge owners prior to our visit except a number of email requests for the balance payment (even though we paid this by direct deposit one month in advance). The connecting flight schedule only arrived a week before our scheduled departure. No directions were given to find the Tiwi Air terminal at Darwin airport (even a mud map would have been helpful) or prior advice regarding the airlines 15kg baggage limit per person, although this is written in the fine print on the back of the document. Our phone calls were not answered and our emails contacts were often never returned. We were only given a brief overview of the fishing arrangements by a staff member at the airport on the first day and did not meet the owner until dinner later that night, along with a gratuitous handshake and our "complementary bottle of wine". We were made to feel very uncomfortable at times by the owner by having to seek information about the 4-day residential package inclusions and anticipated cultural activities through the glass screened enclosure of the bar / office. It would appear that the owner prefers all communication to be made via the lodge staff. The owner’s eventual last day response was we could do whatever we liked but how could we be expected to know the possibilities on our first visit to Melville Island? Eventually we found our way to the art and craft centre and met up with a few locals with a more relaxed attitude. The only positive we could draw from this forgettable experience was the support and consideration given to us by our aboriginal fishing guide. He proved invaluable in providing local knowledge and went out of his way to ensure we caught a number of fish to remember. We preferred to release most of our catch as per the local council’s regulations. Unfortunately, the fish and crabs that we did keep were poorly cooked. The steamed fish was undercooked and on one occasion the mud crab was drowned in chili sauce making it impossible to appreciate the natural flavours of fresh seafood. Our understanding is that the guests are expected to provide seafood for the evening meal which is okay but we suspect that we may have been served frozen fish fillets on one night as the flesh texture and consistency was unlike that of freshly caught reef fish. The Fleetwood demountable rooms were very small with minimal bed space for a couple and the example shown on the website is deceptive. Our hard mattress had no mattress cover posing a health risk to guests. The room amenity was not at all like the photograph on the lodge website. Neither of us was able to sleep soundly through the night with the clunky noise and vibration from the aged air conditioner. Eventually, this was turned off in favour of the fan that made slightly less noise. Overall our impression is that of a poorly maintained lodge that relies on previous testimonials for continued patronage. The "ultimate fishing experience” turned into the "ultimate disappointment" for this couple. This lodge has immense unrealised potential given the location and abundance of natural resources but sadly is not presented in a favourable manner.

In response to your review we would like to clarify that you where indeed greeted and picked up at the airport by one of the owners/managers & head guide (David) who is of aboriginal decent and not just one of the staff members. Thank you for your feedback about your trip we can discuss and clarify the issues raised in more detail privately if preferred. .

I have fished fished extensively across the NT, with Kimberley's, Arnhem Land, Mary River, etc etc, but this was my second trip to Munupi. The reason I will always return is the variety of fishing available. All the other resorts concentrate on Barra and that's fine. This week we caught Barra, thread fin, mangrove jack, finger mark , cod, barracuda, queen fish, trevally, Groper, mud crabs..... And the list goes on. Food presented at night is nothing short of excellent.
to give you an example of the service, I happened to mention to one of the guides, I need some extra carbs with my great cold meat and salad lunch we have on the boat. The next day, fresh bread had been added. They actually listen to guests request/desires.
Everyone mentions the guides, but seriously, the 2 guides we had, "Kinky" Clinton and Glenn are THE best you will find in the industry. You want to catch fish, they deliver , all the time, every time.
They are are credit to the resort and their nationality.

A magnificent week spent with great management and staff. This really is a once in a lifetime experience. The food is restaurant standard and more, with fresh mud crabs each night. On top of the great food, there is the excitement of catching fish!! The guides including Glenn, Pete, Jamis and Clinton were so helpful and friendly. If Clinton learnt a few jokes it would be even better.

Words do not describe the experience of fishing & staying at Clearwater Island Lodge.
The Fishing was amazing - Estuary & open water. managed to catch 8 Barra on day one sticking in the estuaries & then the open water was an even better experience with Mackeral, GT's, Cod, Queenies, Saddles, Jacks... not only the best fishing experience i have enjoyed over the years but the guide we had for the two days was awesome. He was much more than a fishing guide basically giving us a detailed rundown on the history of the Island & people. Simply amazing. I am lucky with my work that I do eat out at some of the world's better restaurants & can say that the chef onsite outdoes most of the restaurants with the daily catch..... :-)
A must do for any fisherman or anyone wanting to get away for a week.
I am already planning the next trip....

I had a wonderful time with friends. Great guides and friendly people. 3 solid days of fishing and special dining experience. Not to mention the beautiful sceneries, especially the sunset. Strongly recommend to those who love fishing and also those who never fish before. This will get you to start loving it. Thank you Michael and Kerri! Vincent

My younger brother and his son ,( a keen 15 year old fishing fanatic) wanted a holiday with a difference when they came up to Darwin (my home town) for a two week stay . Well being that the only time they could come was January (worst part of the wet) I frantically looked for somewhere that we could have some adventure but sleep and dine in comfort afterwards.
I found it at Melville Island in a little place called Clearwater Island Lodge.
After a 30 minute comfortable flight from Darwin we touched down at Melville Airport and where greeted by a smiling guy named Clinton who swiftly loaded our bags into the resort van and ferried us on a 5 minute drive to the lodge, there we where met by another smiling guy named Michael who welcomed us and offered us a cold beer (and a Coke) and thoroughly explained what was ahead of our three day fishing adventure. We then had some casting practise with Clinton who showed us the art of using a Bait Casting rod and reel which was very handy if you where fresh.
We where fully aware as being the height of the wet we would probably get smashed by hard rain and thunder storms, instead we were blessed with three days of sunny blue sky's , white clouds and smashed by Barra , Mangrove Jack , Blue Salmon , Snapper , Sharks , Groper , Spanish Mackerel, Mac Tuna and an abundance of other reef fish , I also had a fight with an 80kilo , 2 metre Lemon Shark (He Won).
Our private guide Glenn, was an unbelievably knowledgeable local , he guided us with such precise knowhow and technique that it was hard not to catch a fish, he took us to a pristine white sand beach where he proceeded to cast a throw net and provided us with an abundance of live mullet to use in our quest for big fish and then took us to a creek end he called Jack Central which yielded with each cast of live bait a fight with a feisty, hard pulling Mangrove Jack his patience with the multitude of questions thrown at him by an excited and in awe nephew was admirable and refreshing.
After each fishing session which lasted from 7.00am to 4.30pm for 3 days we would have a nice refreshing shower in the lodges clean amenities and proceed to the well stocked bar for a nice cold beer or what ever else took our fancy , there we met a beautiful lady by the name of Kerri a big smile on her face as we told her about the day and the magnificent fish we had caught , sitting at a table outside the bar Kerri would bring us a platter of tasty battered fresh morsels of fresh fish we had caught , that was not the end of it as the quality fish we caught ended up in front of us at the dinner table , and they where cooked to excellence by Michael.
I have lived in Darwin for 35 years and in my younger days have toured and fished the Territory extensively , I promise you that my time spent at Clear Water Lodge was the most exciting and fulfilling experience I have ever had , thanks Kerri, Michael , Glenn and Clinton and all at the lodge for a life changing adventure.

I recently stayed as part of a group at the lodge for a 4 day fishing adventure. From the moment we were collected at the airport we were made to feel so comfortable by Kerry and Michael. After some casting lessons, wonderful nibbles, a fantastic 3 course dinner, lovely wine and a good sleep, the action began the following morning on a full belly from the cooked breakfast.
All 4 days of fishing were superb with the Guides taking care of everything including meals, drinks, fishing equipment and local knowledge of the best spots. We caught a huge variety of fish and had an incredibly fun time on the water each day. But that's not where the fun ends. Upon returning to the lodge, we were greeted with a platter of nibbles and the bar would open to quench our thirsts. After sharing fishing tales for a while, our three course feast would commence. Jamis and his team cook up a storm every night and Michael's seafood platter was like nothing I've ever seen! The flavours and variety we ate over the course of our stay were as much of a highlight as the incredible fishing experiences
Neesha, Sue and the team keep this place spic and span. Everything is clean and well kept. They make you feel really at home the whole time. Thanks Kerry and Michael. I can't wait to come back!

DAY-‐TO-‐DAY ACTIVITIES
At Clearwater Island Lodge, everything can be customized according to the needs of the group. Some of the highly recommended activities would include a traditional cook-‐up (Tiwi style) in a remote island, crocodile spotting as well as barbecue at our springfed swimming-‐hole. You can see a list of these activities and more in the attached fact sheet.
CULTURAL TOURS
All cultural tours are included in the cost of our fishing packages. In other words guests have the option of doing just fishing or a mixture of fishing and cultural activities at any given time, this does not need to be prearranged. Upon the groups arrival we like to work with them in finding out exactly what they would like to do while here and then go about setting it in motion. For example not everybody in the group may want to fish for 6 days straight, therefore within the price of their fishing package we are able to generate other activities for them.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
Our in-‐house restaurant, Clear View Restaurant & Bar has a wide selection of beers, spirits and wines. If you have any special preferences please let us know and we will specially order this in for you and your group. If you would like to round out your day with your catch expertly cooked for you, our chef has a wide range of mouth watering recipes for every type of Tiwi Island’s fish and crustaceans.
