We found this gem of an establishment after trawling through numerous hotels and B&Bs in the area. Many had vastly increased their prices following relaxation of lockdown rules and recommendations, but this one maintained their normal prices.

On arrival, the establishment looked basic, but after being shown our rooms it was clear that a great deal of work had taken place in improving the facilities. This is still work in progress but not an issue to us. The rooms were basic but comfortable and clean, although storage space minimal.

The food was of excellent quality. The breakfast, which came with the price of the booking, was large and enjoyable, with a good selection. Evening meals were reasonably priced and a good choice, especially for vegan/vegetarians - we dined in for each night of our stay. A good choice of local beers or usual lagers and ciders.

Table service was friendly and welcoming, nothing too much trouble.

The only real issue, which is outside the owner's control, was parking. There are free parking bays outside the front of the pub, but these are few and quickly get used. There is a large free car park further down the hill on the left, but this can fill up at times. It is of course possible to unload/load your car outside the front of the hotel, but you will need to move once completed.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay, and we will have no hesitation in staying here again should the opportunity arise. Thank you to all the staff who made us most welcome.

We planned a last minute 2 day trip to Cornwall and The Thirsty Scholar was perfectly located for us. The owners Adele & Darren are very welcoming and work hard to provide great comfortable B&B accommodation which is fairly priced (not taking advantage of the current national pandemic unlike plenty of others). We opted to eat in both nights of our stay and were not disappointed. The menu is mainly great classic pub fare with some specials however, if you have specific likes or dislikes don’t be afraid to ask/mention them. My husband had commented to Darren (Chef) that he had chosen hake on the first night and it was delicious, so much so that he planned to have it the second night. Darren asked if he would like an alternative dish, the conversation resulted in a surprise hake dish - freshly prepared, totally delicious and a real treat. We later found out the Darren is a classically trained chef and loves nothing more than creating dishes for appreciate guests. We can’t rate the Thirsty Scholar highly enough, we have another trip planned later in the year and will be enjoying the culinary delights once again. Thanks to you both and your Team who were extremely friendly and accommodating.

We had 2 rooms for 2 nights.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, in particular Heather who welcomed us on arrival and was a brilliant hostess.

We ate on the terrace, enjoying the evening sunshine and despite being very busy the food choice was basic but good, the wine list limited, but everyone enjoyed themselves. What I liked about this pub were the friendly locals.

The only down side, which can be typical of coastal locations, is the parking, if you arrive in the afternoon and get a spot close by I suggest you keep it, in the evening the street parking and free car park are extremely busy.

The Covid precautions were also well managed with temperature testing, a recorder of customers and menus posted on the wall so you did not have to handle one.

We would definitely use again.

Located at the top of the town good proximity to the railway station and short stroll downhill to the harbor area - walkable to Falmouth, but is a reasonable distance. Stayed in a double room, stylish, mostly clean and tidy would benefit from a couple of 'snagging' repairs (door handle and shower controls) - no chair in room. Staff friendly and attentive.
Best bit was the food - evening Fish & Chips were excellent and very good Full English Breakfast.

Had a lovely 5 nights staying here. Food and all the staff are very friendly and accommodating.
Couple of issues were the car park. I know it’s not the fault of the accommodation but I think they need to make people aware of the very steep hill to walk up from the car park to the pub and the pub is not suitable for people who might have walking difficulties.
The other issues is first impressions which should be the focal point. The room was clean apart from bottom of the shower curtain was stained, plug hole in shower did not drain properly and there was a water stain on the carpet where it must have flooded before.
There are also not enough storage. I rail with hangers but nowhere to put anything else.
Apart from that we had a lovely stay and would like to thank the staff for a wonderful stay.

Booked a table, arrived and the waitress pointed out the table, told us we had to order at the bar as they were busy and the menu was completely different to what was online. We tried to let them know we were leaving but were ignored. Disappointing.

Burger deal is good value but have had better burgers for the price.
Steak was reasonably priced and tasty but quite chewy. It came with a whole white onion. The onion was under cooked and to be honest who wants a whole onion with their steak???
Overall was ok but wouldn’t rush back.

Wow do not go here!!

The most unpleasant land lord, and the food was awful...

If you don't mind a rude bar man and crap food then it's worth it for the kids menu £1 a meal... Can't argue with that to be fair.

Save yourself the bother and go somewhere else!

We stayed for three nights in November. The room was really well done and the bed (and pillows) very comfortable. We didn't eat there in the evening but the breakfasts were great, with friendly service with nothing too much trouble.
We would highly recommend the Thirsty Scholar as a great base when visiting Penryn and Falmouth.

I think it's 11.30 until 11 although I was there of a Saturday and they closed at 12. You obviously get a front door ad well as a room key so you can come and go as pleased. I hope this helps Glyn
