What an absolutely brilliant time we had when we stayed here! Quirky, comfortable, great facilities. We cooked, played cards, mixed with other guests and slept very well. The carriage has everything you need and the sharing aspect was lovely. Ally was great at answering any questions we had before our visit and the whole experience was well worth the money. We will definitely be back! Loved it 🥰

Brilliant Value for money. Dead Quirky. If you are a train fan or just looking for space and silence, this is it. Old trans have real style unlike like modern ones. This is a wonderful conversion into an independent hostel. Glen Finnan station is magic at midnight. It’s a great train ride to Mallaig where you can go Whale watching off the west coast of Knoydart, one of the last true wilderness areas left in Western Europe. Fans of the film "Local Hero" can explore the coast south of Mallaig and find "Ben's beach", as Happer ( Burt Lancaster ) said in the film, "Great sky you've got here McKintyre, Well done!". A truly magical place.

I just loved staying here, and will be back again. So nice to stay somewhere so quirky and different. The bed was comfortable, kitchen really well equipped and lounge area made me feel that the train would be actually setting off soon! All very clean also.

Today I was parked at the side of the road with my friend and we had just quickly jumped up to the station to watch the jacobite go passed before we were gonna check out the cafe for some food but the owner of the sleeper car opened my car door, looked in, slammed it closed and when we asked him why he opened my car door he started being very rude and verbally aggressive towards us, told us to leave and said we couldn’t park there which is fair enough, the way he spoke to us is disgusting and reading the other reviews on this site not a lot of people have had a great encounter. Lost a customer for the cafe and I certainly won’t recommend to anyone. For anyone else parked there today at 10.45 he tried all the car doors parked in front of the sleeper train.

Response from Ally Entwistle, General Manager at Glenfinnan Sleeping Car
Responded 7 Oct 2023
We have reported this review, as it is untrue. The reviewer was not a guest of ours as it clearly states in their review. We had no interaction with this person whatsoever and neither did the owner of the sleeping car as we have spoken to them about this. We are not in charge of the parking at the station and also have no control over it, as the parking spaces are Scotrail parking spaces.

We enjoyed our stay in the Sleeping Car so much. It is just fun to live in a train. The kitchen is the best equipped we've ever seen. We did not expect much from the beds in a sleeping car, but they were really good and we slept very well. Everything was very clean and comfy. The location is great, you can do a lot of things in the area, and the viaduct trail starts just next to the Sleeping Car. Ally and Mark are wonderful hosts. We would love to come back one day.

Wonderful placeb So quaint, oldfashioned in the right way. The best equipped kitchen I have ever come across for a bunkhouse/hostel/sleepover place anywhere! Such good quality. Felt so at home there with my family. Drying room is small and not really suitable to wet weather clothes that in Scotland can end up very wet indeed! But there is a washing mashine with included eco pellets in the drum so once the wet clothes has been washed the drying room works fine - but a tad slow… But we were not in a hurry so it was fine

I stayed here for 1 night end of May with my 9 year old son. We were travelling from Glasgow to Isle of Skye via train (& ferry) and this was a great stopping point right next to Glenfinnan station. Communication from Ally beforehand was great and everything we needed to know was in the digital guide. We arrived on the train early afternoon, left our luggage in the large lockers and walked down to see the viaduct, monument, loch and church. The following morning one of the volunteers spent some time in the signalbox with my son, we visited the station museum and had lunch in the dining car before getting the train up to Mallaig. The sleeper car was well equipped, clean and comfortable. We both had a decent night’s sleep. There’s not loads of space in the rooms so we ended up leaving our larger luggage in the locker and just bringing in an overnight bag. All the other rooms were occupied but we had no problems using the bathroom when we needed to and found the other people staying friendly, it was mainly hikers so no one was having noisy wild evenings, all quite chilled! My son and I cooked dinner then played Scrabble in the living area of the carriage (lots of board games provided) I’d recommend staying here, especially if you’re travelling by train. It’s well looked after, great eco ethos, clean and comfy.

We stayed in a family room as a couple and it was just enough space for us, it is a little cramped but it wouldn't be authentic if it wasn't. Partner 6'2 and bed was big enough so that's good. Everything you need in the kitchen including free organic coffee, eggs were a bonus so thank you! 4 rooms, 1 toilet and 1 shower. Key code to enter and your name is on your room. Information provided in an app before arrival with everything we need for the stay. We hardly ever had to wait to use the facilities. Would love to say again, recommended!

The sleeper train was a wonderful experience. Small rooms (as you'd expect) but a surprisingly spacious kitchen with a washer. The train itself was fantastic. However, on our second day I had an interaction with the host which left me feeling awful. Making breakfast I burnt some toast, which set off the piercing fire alarm and created a fair bit of smoke in the tight space (but no fire). As we were dealing with that, the host arrived to help. Her help was appreciated, but her manner was not at all helpful - aggressive, demeaning, and bullying. I'm already feeling bad for setting off the alarm, disturbing the other guests, and ruining our breakfast. Then she tore a strip off me - treated me like a reckless child and repeatedly admonished me for not reading the toaster manual (it is an unusual toaster which she most helpfully informed me is worth 180 pounds). Also there is a sign which I didn't see saying to open the windows and turn on the fan when using the toaster, which implies this isn't the first time this has happened. The one good thing to come of this is that it sparked a conversation with my 3 year old daughter, who witnessed this all, about how we don't yell at people for making mistakes.

Response from Mark Entwistle, General Manager at Glenfinnan Sleeping Car
Responded 22 Jun 2023
As co-host of Glenfinnan Sleeping Car along with my wife we are sorry that a guest felt they needed to post a complaint. We take the issue of guest safety extremely seriously. As a property in multiple occupation it is important that the Sleeping Car has an appropriate fire alarm system and an upgraded fire control panel was installed towards the end of last year before we took over the operation of the Sleeping Car in March. By its very nature this 1950s vintage railway carriage has a somewhat constrained interior and as such it does not take much in the way of toast burning or food on the hob getting overcooked to trigger an alarm. This is why there are signs advising guests to both open the kitchen window adjacent to the toaster - which is at the end of the kitchen farthest from the fire alarm sensor - and turn on the extractor fan. The only alternative is to remove the toaster or cooker completely - something we wish to avoid doing for the sake of our guests' convenience. On the day in question there was actually so much black smoke billowing from carriage windows at the end of the 65ft corridor that there was real concern this was indeed an actual fire. Fears that a fire had broken out putting guests including children at risk tends to heighten emotions and understandably so. This was not an unusual type of toaster but a four-slice Dualit model. On investigation it emerged that the guest in question had been trying to toast four slices with the toaster in two-slice only mode. His repeated attempts to get the toaster to brown all the bread meant that the first two slices were blackened and burned almost beyond recognition and in an attempt to cut down the smoke someone had actually hurled the blackened smouldering bread from a window. The fire alarm had to be left sounding until it was established that there was no actual fire and this necessitated voices having to be raised to be heard. Nobody was yelled at. The reason every guest is emailed a digital downloadable guide for everything they need to make their stay as enjoyable as possible is to avoid such incidents happening. If someone feels they are totally familiar with toasters they may well not read the section on toasters as was apparently the case here - and with the result being that the local fire brigade was very nearly summoned. The four slice toaster has now been replaced with the two-slice version. The guest's reluctance to acknowledge the potential seriousness of the first situation was frustrating and possibly concerning to other guests who witnessed the incident. This one incident left the entire carriage and all the fresh linen and bedding supplies smelling of smoke for three days, necessitating a large extra amount of laundry and cleaning by just the two of us at one of the busiest periods of our season. Every single time the fire alarm is triggered has to be treated in the first instance as a potentially genuine outbreak of fire until it is established as being otherwise. This incident could have potentially led to a situation that had much more serious consequences than someone feeling they had been yelled at. As hosts we have a duty of care for every single guest and if on occasion an individual feels we have overstepped the mark due to safety concerns then we can only say we have noted their comments - but we will never apologise for putting guests' safety at the top of our priority list. We want everyone to enjoy a magical stay at Glenfinnan and in the Sleeping Car. We never want a family to experience a tragedy on what should always be a fantastic visit to this iconic and special part of Scotland.
