Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Not a pleasant stay, the smell around the lobby is awful but couldn’t work out what it was. Food is terrible. This place is in desperate need of a renovation. Also really poor parking and lack of security as my car was broken into.

My wife and I were travelling back to Kent after attending a good friend's funeral at the Forest of Dean crematorium. The traffic was bad and we had not been away for a while, just the 2 of us, we thought we'd stay at the Cheltenham Regency Hotel and travel back the next day. Knowing that our daughter (who has severe anxiety) had her boyfriend staying over for company, we felt happy to book the hotel and were excited about staying away but when we called her to let her know, she said that her boyfriend was no longer able to come over and started to spiral into a panic. Obviously, we reassured her and told her we would come back. We contacted the hotel literally within 10 minutes of making the original booking to ask for a refund only to be told that it was too late. We protested saying that we had only just made the booking and asked them (very nicely) to refund us - explaining the circumstances of us having to cancel. They refused and said that we could transfer the date but that was all. I have no idea when, if ever, we will be in Cheltenham again so that was that. I did threaten them with a bad review in a last ditch effort to persuade them to see reason but they obviously didn't care and felt that a single review from some guy in Kent would not affect them too much. Well...maybe it will and maybe it won't!

The hotel is quite a way out of town but on a convenient bus route to the centre. The few staff were helpful, and despite outward appearances and first impressions of the foyer the room was clean and pleasant. However the breakfast was the worst we've ever had at a hotel - there was only one set of dirty cutlery set out and the cooked option looked and tasted as if it had been out all week. The scrambled eggs had burnt bits in it from where it had been scraped off a pan, the baked beans were a congealed blob and the mushrooms didn't appear cooked at all. There wasn't even a member of staff to ask for additional cutlery and my husband had to try and eat his with a spoon. There was only boxed cereals and toast as the 'continental' options.

My wife booked this place to attend her graduation. Arriving about 10 minutes before 2 she asked if we could check in. Unfortunately we were told no and to come back at 2 - a little inflexible. When we arrived the reception lady looked as though she was having a bad day and I don’t feel she was that helpful. Tv in the room doesn’t work as it says it needs a usb. We asked to4an iron and after an hour nothing turned up. There was also no answer at reception when we rang. That was the first night. Just hope it gets better but I’m not holding my breath given the current experience. Unlikely to stay here again or recommend it to friends.

The hotel itself from the outside was modest enough, and the room was absolutely fine, the TV could have been updated for smart TV but that's all really. Customer service was below standards, messing up our booking because we booked 3 separate nights which obviously confused them. We got promised super fast free WiFi but within 20 seconds of logging on it, the WiFi is gone. Really annoying to use our data for the whole 3 nights when WiFi was avaliable... Overall its not a bad place to stay but it's focus seems to be more older people .

Read a few reviews from Sept 21, seems everything has been improved. Shower is the best I’ve had in a while, great water pressure and temp variation. King sized bed is comfy, 40-odd inch TV, 2 chairs and table, desk to work at, free teas and coffees in the room and a fridge (empty) in the room. Reception very pleasant and bar just fine as well. Got the room for £50 on hotels.com and will definitely stay again.

Booked for 2 nights garden view with breakfast. Thought I knew this hotel as my Dad married there a few years ago and it was OK. Now not OK in all senses. Reception was a mess with opened Amazon boxes and piles of paper. However lady was nice and took us to our room, checked towels and delivered another towel. Room was large but some lights not working. "Garden view" is over the back car park but we got a front facing room over front car park and busy road. Large bed, OK bathroom. 8am in the morning the power went off. A dribble of tepid water out of the shower. Had to use phone torches to see. Packed up and went to reception. 3 youths manning the desk. Said power out in area (first lie). Found out they had already taken funds from my card. Asked for a refund sas only paying for 1 night. The youth said Manager was in Manchester and couldn't get him on the phone to authorise. I said I wasn't leaving until I got a refund for 1 night. He then appeared to put through a credit on my card (2nd lie). However the next day it showed as another debit. These people are charlatans and are out to con you. DO NOT STAY IN THIS HOTEL. I've requested a refund on my card for the 1 night we didn't stay and the credit which was debited, from my card provider. I'm contacting trading standards and investigating getting their card merchant status removed as they've done the credit/debit scam before. This hotel should be removed from all sites.

AVOID this hotel at ALL COSTS. The only people missing from the staff of this hotel were Basil, Sybil, Polly and Manuel ... oh, and Henry the Hoover. We were a party of 30-odd having booked 24 rooms and we're still waiting for the key to one of the rooms! Despite having provided a rooming list a fortnight beforehand it came as quite the surprise to the receptionist, and the myriad of staff who suddenly appeared, that we might want to check everyone in at the same time - a novel idea, I know! Check in took over an hour as we had to start from scrach with the rooming list. Keys were handed out and then asked to be returned as they were handing out keys to rooms which were already booked out. Twin rooms were handed out as single rooms and vice versa ... meaning these keys also needed to be returned and swapped ... but this was the least of our problems. Several rooms didn't have any towels, some didn't have bedding. Those rooms with towles found that many were torn or dirty. One room had a half eaten Yorkie bar left in the fridge ... which might have come in handy the next morning because if check in was laugahble then breakfast was absolutely farcical! Having confirmed with staff on three seperate occasions that breakfast would start at 7.00am the only people in the breakfast area (including the kitchen) at 7.00 were our group. By 7.10am the only “breakfast” available was half a loaf of white bread to be toasted … but no butter and no jam! There wasn’t even any hot water in the urn to make a cup of tea, but then again, there weren't any tea bags either and there were four sachets of Nescafe instant coffee to be shared between all of the guets. By 7.20am some cereal had arrived, but there were only 12 bowls - we were a party of 39 and we needed to leave the hotel at 8.00am! By the time they managed to find some bowls, there wasn’t any milk, by the time the milk arrived there were no spoons. The "hot" food arrived in stages - bacon at 7.30am, the susages arrived at 7.40am but they weren’t cooked and just as we were leaving the beans and what appeared to be scrambled eggs (although it's anybody's guess if that's what they actuall were) were brought out. The hotel is tired and in need of an overhaul; carpets are frayed and dirty, the plaster is peeling off the walls, the basins are cracked and bereft of plugs, the showers are tepid at best, no shower gel/shampoo is provided ... oh and the Air Condition doesn't work. Overpriced, shabby, shambolic and clueless. If I could give a Zero rating, I would

AVOID, do NOT waste your money. Very low standards here and yet three or four years ago this was a fantastic hotel, but NOT anymore. The detail: Numerous evidence of cost cutting and poor maintenance is evident everywhere. We stayed Friday 10th September and we will never return ! We booked a twin room by telephone three hours earlier and after receiving the keys we walked into a double !! Excuses excuses all the way. It was just after 10pm so we had a drink in the bar, no complimentary offers for the inconvenience, the receptionist/barman wasn’t interested. Marked and unclean tables in the bar area with a very untidy carpet. The apologetic sign at reception about the air conditioning not working should have been a warning of what was to come ! The red carpet across the reception area looks very tired and unclean. No fire doors to the bedrooms, they must be at least 20 years old and more. The bedroom and bathroom were generally good, but no plug in the wash basin and NO hot water from the shower or sink in the morning :-((( So to breakfast we went at 7.50am, no breakfast menu at the table, so no choices, just self service for toast and cereal in the corner. The thinnest and cheapest bread that you could find was on the tray, but dirty finger prints very evident in the white bread, yuk and where were the tongs ? No fruit offered whatsoever. No peculated coffee or even machine coffee here, just Nescafé sachets…. reminds me of the 1980’s, lol. Some very gorgeous gold framed mirrors on the walls in the restaurant (previous owners must have liked good detail), but then as you look upwards, we find peeling wallpaper and cracks, so more evidence of poor maintenance. On the Saturday evening we thought about staying a second night so checked the websites and they wanted £168 (that’s £68 extra from Friday ), what a Damon cheek. At least with Premier Inn etc. we all know what we are getting, but these independents are a million timed worse than Fawlty Towers, Basil would not be pleased, hehe. Thanks for reading this far, I do hope you find better. ps. Mark’s out of 10, only 1. My partner was not happy
