Quite puzzled reading some of the negative reviews here - can't please them all I suppose. We arrived for NYE. Really welcoming chat with the staff on reception, Flossie I believe her nickname is? Could not be more accomodating or helpful. Had already had email correspondence, and had pre booked time in the spa (complimentatry use of outdoor heated pool and Vivarium). We were in cottage 19. It's a duplex with a hot tub, sky TV, mini bar (some of which was complimentary - nice touch there.) Really modern, huge comfy bed, umbrellas, pop up tv from the end of the bed, slippers, robes, and a dog bed for Maisy and treats and poo bags! We were shown all this by another in house staff member, also called Maisy, who was super helpful. The young lady in the Spa could not be more helpful and sweet, explaining the history of BH and the ghost of Rosemary ! My GF booked in for a spa treatment for the next day. We used the pool in the rain and the Vivarium and lounge. And so to the Boot for dinner, great meal, again really amazing service and friendly staff. Given lamps to walk down the road in the dark wet of the Costwolds on a December evening. On return, had a nice chat with the manager Emanuele. He could not be more charming and helpful, talked about future BH events, cars, movies, Italy etc. He took time out on a busy NYE when I am sure he would rather have been off home to setup the movie room for us with exclusive use to kill some hours before midnight, even had blankets and popcorn on offer. We were brought tea as well. Then my favourite part the traditional English breakfast which was amazing, cornflakes, juice, full english , toast, and croissants. The staff could not be more helpful, and even paying the bill, I had NOT noticed that they had charged us for the NYE package dinner which we had not had and Flossie did notice it had been incorrectly billed and immediately corrected it. If I had to be really nit picky, I often have to work when travelling and there was no phone reception there so I was reliant on the internet for emails and whats app, which we could not get to work for more than 30 seconds a time in cottage 19. It just keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. But works ok in the main hotel. I would also just suggest that they make the mini bar treats all complimentary, it wouldn't cost the hotel more than 5£ if they ordered them in bulk and would be a nice additional touch rather than having to read which things are free and which you would get charged for. Looking forward to going back in the Summer when the weather is a bit nicer. Fingers crossed for some cool invite only events. Hint hint. Thanks to all the staff there for making it such a great trip!

Dining at the Potager restaurant was a truly exceptional experience. The warm ambiance, accentuated by open fires, created a cozy and inviting atmosphere, which made us feel relaxed! The culinary journey was nothing short of exquisite, with each food plate executed to perfection. Eris and the attentive staff added to the overall charm, ensuring a dining experience that couldn't have been better. Their efforts did not go unnoticed, and the positive feedback from our team speaks volumes about the quality of service we experienced and the culinary was nothing short of exceptional, with each food plate executed to perfection showcasing a delightful blend of flavours and creativity. From start to finish, it was a delightful evening of indulgence and impeccable service. As our chief test pilot said get ready cause this is a new tradition for the team and will have a series of events coming up, happy new year !

This was our 10th stay over the Christmas period and again have booked to go back next year when we checked out. Yes there could be a few improvements made to the room, the bathroom ceiling could do with a paint and some new blinds wouldn’t go amiss and the area where they grow vegetables looks less used than previously which is a shame as they have the room and poly tunnels, so they could do so much more here. However what you do get in return by staying there is first class friendly service and amazing food. The beds are very comfy and the house is beautiful. Emanuele the manager is very friendly and you know that he really wants you to enjoy your stay. The few changes they made this year were great like the brass band playing carols on Christmas Eve and the clay pigeon shooting on Boxing Day. So Barnsley may be shabby chic to some others bearing in mind the reviews however for our 3 days stay over Christmas does what it needs to do, excellent service, amazing food, and a relaxed atmosphere with no stuffiness like you get in other hotels. Looking forward to Christmas 2024!!

I booked for a birthday meal with my family 5 adults and two children a month before my celebration, Yes two days before my birthday, I telephoned to check if they do vegan and a children's menu. Only to be told by the Manger they do not have children there after 5 pm !!!!!. So totally disgusted as I was not told that at the time of booking. I had booked and said at the time of booking a month before there would be 5 adults and 2 children. The Manager had no answer to my statement only said they Never have had children there after 5 pm. Even the Ritz and the Clivedon hotels have children. !!!!!!!!!! THANKS BARNSLEY HOUSE SO TOTALLY DISGUSTED WITH YOUR SERVICE !!!!!

Disappointing from start to finish. Rooms tired, dirty and in need of updating. When we arrived, we found two half drunk bottles of water in the fridge. Bathroom smelt damp and the blinds were covered in mould. In room amentities really poor. We stayed in a Stable Suite for reference. Spa was souless and again, dirty. Cold coffee was sat there for hours at the drinks station. Spa receptionist was really friendly and accommodating, but to be honest, we didn’t want to spend any longer there. Staff clearly very inexperienced but trying their best. Not enough of them. Breakfast was seriously poor - missed orders, incorrect drinks and stale tasting food. Dinner at The Boot across the road was great however. 10/10 and a breath of fresh air leaving Barnsley. Service and food were excellent. At this price point, there are MANY better hotels locally. Dormy House being our favourite. We would not recommend Barnsley, which is a shame as we’d had it on our list to visit for a while and we left very underwhelmed.

Dear Harriet, thank you very much for your feedback. I am very sorry to hear that we didn't meet your expectations on this occasion. We value very much our guest's feedback, and I would love to have the opportunity to discuss your points as soon s possible, in fact, I am trying to find your booking but I can't link your name with any booking; it looks like you stayed in one of our stables suite perhaps under a different name? I was wondering if you could contact me by calling the Hotel? If you would be so kind to send me your number, I'll be very happy to call you whenever is conveninet for you. Once again, please accept our apologies and I look forward to talking to you. Warm Regards Emanuele

Simply incredible. You arrive and are welcomed by the friendly reception team. You then led to the room that was already ready! Super quick! The rooms are outstanding, one of the best we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in a lot of hotels in the cotsworlds! Vaulted ceiling and super comfy beds finished with outstanding views across the the gardens. The spa facilities were beautiful and the staff were super friendly and hot drinks facilities (nice touch) were maintained throughout the day. It is a very relaxed atmosphere what is nice. Towels and gowns available in beautiful wicker baskets for you help yourself too. The spa facilities are very elegant throughout and the outdoor pool is large and outstanding! What I loved about the spa is there is plenty of room for everyone and it is all spaced out. We had lunch in the lounge by the open fires surrounded by the Christmas decorations that we learnt that some are made from their garden in the summer time, left to dry out then the flower is sprayed. How outstanding is that? They have really thought about finishing touches and keeping things local and within old english. The hotel has lanterns at night time around the hotel that are candle lit adding the most beautiful atmosphere. There are torches on the side if wish to go walking at night! they have thought of everything to make it a fantastic stay. Of course If you need anything further JUST ASK the team are always happy to help we found and will deal with your request very quickly and efficiently. Last of all the restaurant is elegantly finished and is very sophisticated. We really liked the style. Simple but stunning. Food was exceptional and the waiter was fantastic! Very friendly and knew his stuff!(very knowledgeable), he was very efficient but very friendly and approachable. He could not do enough for us and we felt so looked after in fact we would say he serviced us to Michelin star level. Overall as I said I have stayed in a lot of hotels but Barnsley house has set the bar high! The House is outstanding and the rooms exceptional. The team running this hotel are at the top of their game. We were lucky to meet the manager Emanuele who is a true hotelier who is very hands on in the running of the hotel and is exceptional at making his guests experience the very best. Thank you for having us and we will be back. Cannot recommend highly enough so go and give BARNSLEY HOUSE a try and you will not be disappointed.

Having wanted to stay for a while we were left disappointed. Beautiful building and rooms but stay down by attention to detail and service you would not expect . We booked the dinner, bed and breakdast package for £455. Only after you book do they tell you ‘dinner’ is £45 each toward dinner. Starters £14-20 and mains £34-90. So ‘dinner’ would have to be just a main or a starter and a pudding!! Wonderful welcome from reception staff but after that service fell way below expectations. Spa - wonderful pool but needs more attention/cleaning, leaves in drains, gravel on bottom. Two staff made no effort to check on us and we had to leave pool go to reception to ask a drink. (Found staff behind reception on their phones) Had to ask for a drinks menu as is wasn’t voulnteered, staff then went off to find one. The gowns and slippers you get yourself from a basket in the corridor which feels cheap. Neither steam room or sauna were at hot enough temperature so weren’t used. Potager Restaurant Pleasant setting but lacking in atmosphere. Over priced. Attentive staff but lack of 5 star detail. We ate at 8pm and felt they wanted to finish up from the outset! Offered water and then few minutes later asked for our order. No menu explanation. No drinks first - when questioned I was told “you can do them both now”. Menu was interesting but narrow - one vegetarian, one fish and both meat dishes were game (poor choice) or a sharing 30oz steak for £90! The bread rolls were stale, we sent them back and received another two warmed in steamer, these were also hard and inedible. We gave up on bread. Wines were very expensive and when we ordered a carafe it was left at our table, without pouring. When is was poured from the ice bucket the carafe was not wiped and dripped onto my wife. Starters and main were of reasonable quality but felt overpriced and as mentioned not affordable in package. By time we finished dinner (21:30) the the fires were going out so we ventured to The Boot. This was equally disappointing it was a cold autumn evening we asked if we could sit by the fire for a drink to be told “to be honest we putting the fire out now!and re-laying the restaurant”. So we sat in a cold bar next to a unlit log burner. We ventured back to the hotel using the advertised torches (dark, ) these were not torches but LED lanterns that were useless. We returned to the hotel (22:20) and had to find a staff member. When we asked for a drink we were told “I’ll have to check with the manager!!” Eventually one was agreed and WE relit the fire ourselves in the lounge area. Drinks were served and all staff left with no check back to see if we needed anything else. We had no choice but to finish our drink and head to the room. The room was very nice, comfy bed etc. Lovely bathroom, but shampoo and conditioner were fixed to wall in the shower. This meant when my wife wanted to wash her hair in bath I hand to dispense handfuls and carry them around tl her. Breakfast was fantastic, made fresh with great service. Definitely the highlight. Having electric vehicle charging on site was very good and price very fair. So overall great potential. High price but missing the 5 star service you are charging for. Too much excellent competition in the area for you to be complacent. Please someone in management team do a “secret shopper” in your own hotel. Would I stay here again, no and I am afraid I would discourage any of my friends from the spa, restaurant or evening in the boot. We mentioned issues as they arose and lovely reception staff very apologetic on the last day agreeing this is below what they would aim for. It turned out our dinner had been discounted by 10% on the night but we had not been made aware of this.

The service certainly doesn’t align itself with the way Barnsley house portrays itself. I would certainly eat in the restaurant again, but hotel staff weren’t particularly helpful. With so many excellent options in the surrounding areas I wouldn’t rush back if at all.
