Our favourite stop in Guatemala. The staff are all amazing, knowledgeable and couldn’t be more helpful. Our room was incredible, giving 24hr birding options (see pics). We saw a Quetzal before we’d even checked in and saw several during our stay. I would highly recommend the great value night walk and birding tour (the staff members running the tours have incredible eyesight and knowledge) the grounds have their own trails you can do yourself too. I can’t recommend this place enough, literally shed tears as we left. We could not have been made to feel more welcome by everyone here.

I did not spend the night here. I came by early in the morning and Amílcar helped me to view and video a resplendent quetzal that was passing through. A once-in-a-lifetime experience. The trail follows a small creek and you see a number of small waterfalls. The hike through the cloud forest is well worth a visit. Applying bug repellent will make your hike more enjoyable.

The food was deplorable… the puyaso was horrible.. dry burnt and tiny. It was 3 of us in a table and we got 2 tortillas for the whole table. Tiny portions … and as we ordered a water she bumped up the price .. I understand this is a different country but what was given to us wasn’t great .. it’s was a shame

The fantastic thing about this place is that it’s adjacent to the Biotopo del Quetzal, about a 5-minute walk up the road. Quetzals also appear to like it. Our driver said he had been to the biotopo many times without ever spotting one of the iconic birds. But he had seen them on at least a half dozen occasions at this little lodge, including on the morning of our stay. The price we paid for one of the cabins was very reasonable (300 quetzals), and the food on offer was respectable. Beware this is a pretty rustic experience. However, ample hot water in the shower, cheerful color on the walls, and excellent towels more than satisfied us for our one night. A few touches could make it even better: hot water on offer in the morning for early birdwatchers. A few more hooks on which to hang wet items and warmer blankets. (The cloud forest can be cold!) Still, we could not think of a bettter base for anyone who’s serious about seeing a quetzal. …

The hotel is situated right within the cloud forest, and has its own nature trail with excellent forest views and two natural pools to swim in. Hospitality was extremely friendly and welcoming. The room, however, was very small, simple and miserably cold at night. Also, the restaurant food caused me severe stomach problems - make sure to eat only well-cooked food. While it was great to get away from technology while in this natural area, be aware that they have no Wifi, and cellular reception in the area is poor and unreliable

Juan Pablo (the manager of the hotel) greeted us with smiles, coffee and great hospitality. In general the staff were helpful, friendly and wanting to share with us their life in Guatemala. We even helped them trap a enormous tree. They really had a wish to make it the best stay for us and also genuine desire to get to know us and even saw our requests before we asked for it. Juan spoke english very well but the rest of the staff spoke spanish. The staff taught us alot about animals and nature in Guatamala also with a focus on global warming and the consequenses of this. The food was absolutely good and varied. In our family there was something for everyone, even the picky ones ;) - it wasn't even expensive at all! Overall we loved it. WE EVEN SAW THE QUETZAL several times!

Amazing staff who love their jobs and care a lot about the place, animals and generally speaking about the environment trying to be eco-friendly as much as possible. Though there is a small choice for dinner (usually fish or chicken), it is very tasty and plenty. There is more choice for breakfast and again very good quality. They make really nice apple pies. As the hotel is on the edge of the cloud forest, there is a presence of birds everywhere. There are special feeders for humming birds so you can watch those while having your food and watch other wildlife. There are a couple of trails into the forest you can follow yourself to explore the place or with a guide who takes you around to try to spot a quetzal bird (a very passionate chap). The place is educational too hence you can learn a lot about the various types of orchids, forest etc. It is possible to see the quetzal bird (as per comments by other travelers) though we sadly did not see one which was fine as after all this is not a ZOO with caged birds to see. The room was spacious and comfortable enough with protective nets in the windows to stops the mosquitoes get in though worth having repellents too as they were everywhere. Would have stayed longer if our itinerary was not too tight and would definitely come back again. Hopefully the place will be still around as there is a possibility it may be sold and converted into yet another coffee plantation :-( So, please visit and help to save it :-)…

We wish we had stayed in Cobán and come to the biotopo on a day trip. This place is cold and damp and, most of all, overpriced. We have stayed in a lot of places in Guatemala for under 200Q that were better than this room. For some reason (damp or cleaning??) the floor was really wet when we were let into our room at 3.30pm. This made it really difficult to get clean and dry after walking in the forest. There are limited options for food and they are overpriced. Coffee is sold for 25Q which is a crazy price but a breakfast at 35Q includes a coffee, which doesn’t make much sense. They charge 6Q for a small water. We lost electricity in the evening of our stay and had none the following morning. Stay in Cobán - there are way better eating and sleeping options. I suggest Hotel Al Central and Abadia for dinner.…

Simple but cozy accomodations in a very special part of Guatemala: the cloud forest. The buildings are spread out on the lower part of the property, and there are bird feeders, trails, a modest canopy tower and an orchid garden to keep guests entertained (and, yes, quetzals will visit the trees!). The rooms are large, there are plenty of blankets (needed), and there is hot water in the shower, although it could have used a lot more pressure. Weather was, as expected, atrocious - about 5 minutes of sunshine a day before the fog and the drizzle crept in once again -, but that is part of the cloud forest experience. The family that runs the lodge makes it special. They will greet you like dear long lost friends, and treat you as such. It is impossible not to be drawn in by their sense of humor, warmth and generosity. So much so that I hope to see them all again.…

Juan Pablo and the staff greeted us with smiles, warm coffee and delicious brebreakfast. After breakfast we took a hike down to the waterfall followed by a personal tour of the orchid house, history of the property and the laboratory. We received an education and now have a better understanding of why the orchid is such a valuable resource for Guatemala and the ecosystems of the world.
