Santa Marina Beach Hotel is ideally located on the long and sandy beach of Agia Marina village, built along the sea shore, just 8 kilometers from Chania centre. The hotel is separated into two structures; the beach complex and the pool complex, with a combined total of 212 accommodation units. All accommodation units at Santa Marina Beach Hotel have a view either to the garden, pool or to the sea. These are well designed, finely decorated with modern touches, refreshing colors and comfortable furnishings. The pool complex is the most recently redecorated (of the two complexes). The main coastal road separates these two complexes and conveniently linking them is an underground tunnel (easy and safe passage, no need to cross over the main street).

From the minute me and my girlfriend arrived at Santa marina beach hotel in agia marina we was greeted by two huge smiles from the female receptionists (one named Christina) I recall, this straight away got our 7 day stay off to a great start - we were then told that we had been upgraded to the ultra exclusive package and would be staying in the 5* area of the hotel with our room mimi bar restocked daily and free massages whenever along with unlimited bookings of the a la carte restaraunt all included with the package; we had two hotels in different areas of Crete cancelled prior and was swapped to Santa marina agia marina last minute but boy are we now glad we did. Now the friendliness off the staff doesn’t stop there from Giannis the what seemed resteraunt manager to Colin the barman/cocktail maker (the strawberry daiquiri was 👌🏼) to the lady on the middle pool bar and even the main manager talking to us regularly making sure everything was up to standard and that we was happy, yes it was the hotels first opening after the covid and it was fairly quiet but still it is always nice to feel important and for staff to be attentive and wasn’t they just! The room was faultless and cleaned every day without fail, the top pool was a semi infinity pool style which was lovely and the beach you can’t complain, overall the setting and area of the hotel is perfect wether you want to visit chania (20 mins on bus) or just stay and enjoy agia and the hotel itself you will definately enjoy; fresh salads and meats everyday breakfast lunch and dinner and bbq on a Thursday which was something different although we ate out in chania W few nights which was worth it beautiful place. Would defiantly return to this hotel again if we return to agia marina!

A pleasant hotel and a great stay. Many thanks all the staff, especially to the lady from the pool bar, the bartender from the evening bar and to the moldavian lady from the restaurant, all of them very professional. I would make a sugestion to the management - follow the rules in place in other hotels and make it clear for all the guests that you can not leave the towels on the sunbeds If you are not there. In some mornings it is almost imposibile to find a place on the beach, although almost everybody is having breakfast.

On arriving we were told our room was not ready and would be put in a temporary room until the following day. We were given free wifi, free massage and free safe hire to compensaate for this and our cases were moved the following day by the staff whilst we were out. Room was fine but the bathroom was more of an en-suite, we had to shut the door to get to the bath/shower. Buffet was good, could always find something we liked. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We tried catching the bus into Chania on the first day and finally manged to get on the 3rd one as they were all full! So next day we hired a car from Mr Kostas accros the road from the hotel, who was very helpful and reasonbly priced.

Stayed here as a couple 7 - 14 June, half board basis. Booked beach front room, room so small, bathroom small, with six inch step to enter,it was a health and safety issue. Spent 2 nights in this room before Hotel moved us but could only offer us a room over the road. In total 100 steps from Reception to our room. There is not enough emphasis on the layout of this Hotel i.e amount of steps/inclines etc saw families struggling carrying buggies up stairs. One pool directly behind wall by the very busy road, so noisy. We spent most our time by the pool by The Pearl Wing, but no pool bar here.

What can I say about the main restaurant, no tables cleared, queues stretching right into Reception. People were going up to the staff stations to get cups, cutlery etc only to be told off for doing it, how long do you wait after being ignored. This was a daily issue. There should be someone on the door showing people to tables, no organisation whatsoever, and staff so rude. Food cold. No labelling of dishes. Why does this Hotel state "gentlemen to wear long trousers for dinner" when clearly people were coming to dinner straight off the beach. Just goes to prove there is a lack of standards in this Hotel.

At 9.40 am The tables outside by beach were still covered in half full glasses from night before and bins around the complex overflowing.

The restaurant by The Pearl Wing, where we chose to eat rather than encounter the shambles of the main one, was smaller but well run and far superior to the main one.

I would suggest that Jet2 include a "mobility statement" when advertising this Hotel, not just mention few steps.

Tea coffee making facilities in room but never any milk, too painful to ask for anything so we bought our own. No relevant information in room even stating how to call Reception in case of emergency, this appeared along with some milk the day before we came home. It seems that this was a result of someone else's complaint.

We have stayed at 2 other Giannoulis Hotels in Crete which were excellent that is why we booked this, Santa Marina is definitely letting this group down big time, it needs a complete shake up, all we could hear were people complaining.
When leaving we had to negotiate the busy road as to go through the tunnel meant trying to get your cases up and down 48 steps, that didn't include the steps from our room to the tunnel.

We are well travelled but I have to say this is the worst Hotel we have ever stay at.

We stayed for 7 days in a upgraded room on the beach side of the hotel with an amazing view of the Island The Aegean sea is stunning wonderful sunrise and sunsets
The Room itself was small very narrow , it had a fridge and had to ask for a kettle and I bought mugs in one of the numerous supermarkets along the main stretch of Aghia Marina ,
The bathroom was tiny and the temperature of shower varied from warm to hot to freezing 2 mornings we has no hot water !
The room was basic and clean an ample base to discover the Chania region .
Breakfast was interesting they have 1 two slice toaster catering for the entire restaurant and I didn’t find the breakfast staff very friendly at all . Though the food was OK average , Dinner however at the buffet restaurant was good , we are quite well travelled and as a comparative the food was good in the evening , Desserts were the usual of ice cream and a selection of battered cakes by kids unable to use a cake slice !
Outside of the hotel is a busy main stretch of road you can cross the road using the hotels underpass tunnel located directly out of the main entrance . Aghia Marina itself has numerous souvenir shopping , supermarkets , excursions you can buy and you can walk into the old town and hike up the mountain beyond which has cracking views if you can cope with the stray dogs following you with hunger ! Walking Along the main stretch from Aghia Marina is Plantanias another little town with more shopping there are some fabulous traditional Cretan restaurants that are a must and you must try all their local firewater , Raki !
Directly outside the hotel is a bus stop there is a regular service running into Chania and buses run back to the hotel quite late this is a must for your trip , Chania is the jewel in the crown a really stunning place ! It costs about €1.60 pp one way and takes 20 mins. so the hotel Santa Marina is overall a fair hotel …. Not perfect it’s rough round the edges typically Greek ! But it’s situated in a stunning part of the world to explore , the hotel Beach is lovely , but if you can get the ferry to Balos and Gramvousa or try a coach trip to Elefonisi , Do it ! we have even travelled to Santorini from Aghia Marina but that’s a long day , overall I would recommend the hotel as a fabulous base to explore the Chania region but if you want a hotel that you want to spend most of your holiday relaxing on the beach eating drinking and swimming it’s also a good bet .

We arrived passed midnight and were swiftly checked in. Luggage was carried to our rooms by porters. We were hungry after a delayed flight, and glad fruits and 2 very boring sandwiches were left in the room for us. Room was clean, bed very comfy...if you like me prefer hard mattress. Bathroom was however very small. I expected and looked forward to a walk in shower, instead there was a tiny bath tub.

We later noticed rooms sound insulation was not the best. Often woken up by guests slamming doors and upstairs neighbours constantly moving furnitures passed midnight.

Comes the morning, we hit the restaurant for breakfast. Both our boys and us like the variety and freshness of it.
Lunch and dinner were good. Greek salads, aubergines, fish, chicken and basically Mediterranean flavours. There was also spaghetti and fries, which I presume were for kids. I found the food, above average, fresh not greasy and enjoyable.

Deserts were not as diverse as I am used ti in all inclusives 4 stars, but I must say Baklava was just great.

There is from time time a queue at the buffet, and watermelon would run out faster than it was replenished. It might help to have buffet accessible from 2 sides, although I can see that having chefs running through customers with food, may not look good.

Staff were very polite, efficient and pleasant. Giannis, who I presume is the restaurant manager or supervisor kept eagle eyes on the restaurant crew and had it running like clock work.

All staff, from food & beverage to housekeeping worked relentlessly. General areas were swept from sand and even beach walk and outdoors showers were cleaned up after every evening.

Overall a very positive experience and pleasant stay. Are we likely to come back ? a definite 100%.

Santa Marina hotel is perfect for everyone - couples, families, solo travelers - everyone! We arrived late at night and check in was quick and easy. Our bags were very kindly brought to our rooms separately so we did not have to drag them along. We stayed in the pool complex which was lovely, and the choice of 2 pools was good. The underpass makes it easy to move between the complexes as the road can get quite busy. Food was of good quality and there was always something that we would eat (myself being a very fussy eater). The beach is lovely and the views are amazing. If you are one for adventuring out a little, we would definetly recommend catching the bus to Chania, and even venturing the other way for a few hours. The bus is €1.60 for whatever journey you are taking, and the bus stop is right outside the hotel on the main road. It takes approx 20minutes to get to either end. Agia Marina itself (the area in which the hotel is located) is a perfect touristic area, with lots of shops and restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book again.

This hotel is a hotel of two halves which I didn’t feel was made clear at the time of booking. By this, I mean that the hotel’s sections are divided by the road. Some of the accommodation is on one side where you find the restaurant and beach, and the other (higher end) accommodation is on the other side. You can go through a tunnel to access either side, but we just didn’t feel it was ideal. Saying that, at the time of our visit, one of the restaurants (situated where the higher end accommodation was based and where we had booked), was closed due to lower occupancy to comply with COVID19 Regulations and had this been opened our experience might have been different.

The pool area by the higher end accommodation is lovely and the rooms are definitely of better standard that lots of other 4* hotels in Greece. The air conditioning worked well and the bathrooms felt luxurious. The gardens are nicely maintained and after viewing other rooms in the hotel, the higher end option is definitely the best.

The general manager and his senior team really are trying their best to offer excellent customer service. Unfortunately, some of the restaurant buffet staff let the service down. We realised that COVID19 has of course had an impact on how things are run, but we felt there was no need for staff to be rude and, having stayed in other hotels in Greece during this period we knew it didn’t have to be that way. Saying that, there were a few staff that stood out for their excellent service – Efti was one of them, who served us in the Al-La-Carte restaurant.

I wanted to be able to rate this hotel more highly because of the Managers customer service and attitude, as well as the ‘high end’ rooms. However, I felt the food in the buffet could have been of better standard and some of the staff really need to have a nicer persona!

I realise that lots of hotels are still figuring out the best way forward after COVID19, I just hope this hotel can make a few tweaks and it would be so much better.

Responded 9 Sept 2020
Dear Laurahamo24, Thank you kindly for your input which is greatly appreciated! It is quite obvious from your review, that there were some missing information regarding our hotel, eventhough our hotel operates for many years being the senior of our 'Giannoulis Hotels & Resorts' group and it is well known that its sections are divided by the road. We regret that this information has not been acknowledged to you prior to your arrival. Nevertheless, we have tried to offer alternatives by showing other rooms and the final decision was based on those and according to your wish. Unfortunately, this season has been different compared to previous ones in many different scales and this of course has a great impact to our hotels' operation. It is a fact that 'Thodorou' restaurant located at Pearl Wing where your rooms were located was not in operation due to quite low occupancy levels on one hand and to the other hand we had to copy with many limitations and measurements in order to be able to control the spread of COVID 19. Needless to mention that under a normal season that would not have been the case and we understand your discomfort, however it was not totally up to our hands this year. It is rather encouraging to read that you recognise the effort from our management team and some members of our staff to offer an excellent customer service, however on the down side we are quite disappointed to read that a member of our staff did not manage to copy with this ideal. Not to mention, that all necessary actions have been taken in order to safeguard that all members of our staff are customer focused and trying to offer an excellent service to our guests. Finally, your mention for the buffet standard have been noted, yet we would have appreciated it more if we knew about it earlier at the duration of your stay, so as to have the chance to intervene and offer solutions according to your desires which in many cases I am convinced that we did. Once again it has been an honor having you here at our premises, On behalf of every member of the staff at 'Giannoulis Santa Marina Beach Resort', we would like to wish you every success, the best of luck and health to yourself and your lovely family! Looking forward to seeing you again at our premises! Best regards, The management

Negative points:
The rooms. So we booked a room with garden view and a matrimonial bed( we had a small baby 1 year old who sleep with us). The room we received it was very small and small twins beds. I came at reception and told them, that we have a baby who sleep with us and is not possible to sleep in small twins beds.
First they propose to us to put a small mattress and in this way the twins could became matrimonial.
We didn’t want this because anyway the beds were to small for 3 people.
Then they present us other 2 rooms with matrimonial bed( one with garden view- in fact this is not a garden view… with a very small bath and other with pool view- bigger room than others).
We told them that we would like to take the bigger room who has a pool view., because the other room had a very very small bath. They asked to extra pay 50 euro/ night for this room and told us that other family with child doesn’t have problem to stay in a small room like the garden view room. We declined this proposol because we appreciate that we already overpaid when we booked the hotel and I told them the rooms are not 4*
Then they propose to extrapay 10euro/night.
We accepted because - the bed it was big and, the room it was bigger
What I want to say: the garden view rooms is just a name … you have a field view, the rooms are very small, with a small bath and they don’t say anything about this. And this garden view rooms are not 4* rooms.

Positive points:
The beach is the best for a baby and the water is very clean.
The staff ia nice
The food is ok

Arriving at the Hotel after a long journey we were told the sea view room we had paid for had technical issues. We were given a tiny room near the rd and told not to unpack as we were moving the next day. Come back after breakfast we were told but actually we got into our room at 12 after the technical guest had checked out and the room was cleaned. We then unpacked and wasted more time of our precious holiday.
The Hotel was so understaffed it was a awful exsperience. Uncleared tables, no cutlery, repeated food on a daily basis. Spaghetti Bolegnase in a different form every day for lunch.
Constantly asking for what should have been in the All Inclusive package. A glass of wine, water, cutlery, coffee, butter. Just not what we thought it would be. The evening bar man was one of the rudest bartenders I have met.
When I asked for two drinks he told me he had to see my empty glasses before he would. Telling me I knew how AI works...I sure do and it wasnt working at that hotel.
4 nights out of the 6 we went into Hania on the bus at €3.20 return for 2 of us.
Easy to catch opposite the hotel.
Hania is gorgeous...shops , food all amazing.
I dont know where the other guests stayed and wrote lovely reviews on here but this place is not for us.
Beach and pools were lovely though

We had a first floor garden view room last (713) and we did get sun. But I can imagine not all rooms have sun all day. Maybe only part of the day. But we didn't stay in the room all day.

Answer from flick1954

We were allocated 713 across the road. It was a first floor with no lift. We were lucky our room was overlooking a gully shrouded in vegetation with views upto the Pearl Wing and even caught a glimpse of the sea. It was very quiet and peaceful. ..only downside was the trek over to the main hotel ( beach side) for meals and drinks...but there is use of a restaurant near the Pear Wing, although reduced selection, it was never very crowded unlike the main restaurant. The Pool bar was only open until 6pm. Very nice bar for relaxing in, whilst having a breather from the pool. Contained in that building was a shop and a crèche but it wasn't open whilst we were there. ( early October). As we were adults, we didn't use the under pass. It was quicker to cross the road, which can be busy at certain times. Hope this helps
