The whole facility was a single large ornate garden on a hillside. The rooms were small and simple but nice rooms with large and fresh bathrooms with breathtaking views of the lake and mountains.
It was a very nice host couple who created a family atmosphere with places for both socializing and reflection. The food was well cooked and varied and there were good wines available with the food.
The bird watching was facilitated by our knowledgeable, friendly and flexible guide and that there were a couple of hiding places available.

We stayed at Frank and Daniela’s for 5 nights with our 8 year old daughter and dog, Mildred. The drive to the Quinta is quite breath taking and upon arrival, you quickly realize how secluded you are On a pristine lake. We stayed in the larger family room that had a separate small room with a bunk bed which was super comfortable yet cosy. What I didn’t expect from staying at an eco type lodge was that our rooms were tidied and beds were made each morning while we were at breakfast. Laundry can also be done upon request. These are little details that I really appreciated.
The hosts were super friendly and welcoming of us, and after the first couple of days we got to know others staying at the lodge and it felt like one extended family.
Daniela’s cooking is beyond amazing. Lunch (buffet style) & dinner (3 courses) were always something to look forward to each day. Most of the fruits and veggies came straight from their garden! Such a treat to pick your own passion fruit for breakfast. The only thing to worry about is how to work off the food so that you could eat more! There was plenty to do on the lake front (SUPs, kayaks, canoe & a sail boat were at our disposable).
During our stay we were lucky to book a half day bird watching tour w Frank. Although we are not avid “bird watchers”, it was a fun experience (even for our daughter) not to be missed. Frank took amazing pictures during our tour which he sent us! On another day I had a shiatsu massage by Daniela which was thoroughly relaxing and something also not to be missed.

We had such a fun and relaxing stay and we look forward to returning soon. Thank you for your hospitality!

As someone who used to work for Four Seasons Hotels, I am always looking at the details when I stay at a hotel. But this is more than a place to stay, it's an experience. The landscape is remote and pure nature. If you stay here also budget for eating at the Quinta (hotel). If you try to eat outside you will be driving 20-30min to the nearest place to eat, BUT you don't want to do this anyways as Daniela (Frank & Daniela are the owners) is a phenomenal chef. You WANT to eat at the Quinta. Dinner in the main room is part of the experience. There we ate with other guests and created lifelong friends. Frank and Daniela are the sweetest people and make this feel like you are part of the family. The staff delivers the food to tables as Frank checks in and if you like he tells the most incredible stories. Every artifact in the main room has a unique story that really brings a unique charm to the Quinta.
I have never been more relaxed staying in a place. If you are into birding, Frank is an excellent guide and a day with Frank is bound to deliver quite a few laughs.
My wife and I have decided to make this an every year trip. If you want more than just a place to stay, but an experience of a lifetime then book it with 100% confidence.

A stunning peaceful location overlooking the lake where you can enjoy wild swimming and a multitude of water activities.

We felt so welcome by the family and staff and the food is amazing, we will be trying to recreate those delicious flavours.

Frank is a great guide and we thoroughly enjoyed the morning walk and time in the bird hide. In true Arnie Schwarzenegger fashion ……….. ‘I will be back’

Julie and I spent 5 nights at the Quinta in late September 2022. We went for two reasons: firstly, to see some birds; and secondly to relax for a few days having been sightseeing in Porto and Lisbon. We had a fantastic time: the Quinta is very remote, and beautiful, even better than it looks in the photos, with steep paths descending through the gardens to the lakeside. Dotted around you will come across a vegetable garden, a large yoga studio, a sauna, several secluded seating areas – and down by the lake a dock with a canoe, kayaks and paddle boards. We went out birding for two half days. Whilst we didn’t see quite as many birds as we might have hoped we did get good sightings of spotted flycatchers, Iberian magpies, a hoopoe and a blue rock thrush, among others. Everything about the quinta ran like clockwork (we were picked up and dropped off at the station in Santa Clara Saboia); everything was immaculate; and the meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner (prepared by Daniella) were uniformly delicious.
I can’t in fact think of anything critical to say. It is indeed a sort of paradise, with Frank as the perfect host: it was clear to us that the quinta is a real lifetime labour of love for him. As the Arsenal fans used to chant (wrongly as it turns out) “there’s only one Frank McLintock.”

We stayed four nights at the Quinta do Barranco da Estrada to relax and do some birding with host Frank McClintock, an accomplished birder and wildlife photographer. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The Quinta is “off the grid” but everything ran without a hitch on their solar and generator powered system. The meals at the Quinta were excellent, as co-host Daniela is an accomplished chef.

Frank took us birding on the Alentejo plain south of the Quinta, along rural roads, and also along the Atlantic coast. We were there in October, the tail end of birding season, but we saw lots of birds.

The Quinta is situated on a ridge top up an unpaved but well-maintained road a couple of miles from the nearest town and overlooking a huge reservoir lake. Steps from the Quinta lead down to the water. The premises have a lush garden that attracts birds and butterflies. Quinta staff met us at the Santa Clara-Saboia train station when we arrived and took us back to the station for our return trip to Lisbon. There is also local taxi service. Another couple who stayed there while we were there drove their rented car to the Quinta.

In short, the Quinta do Barranco da Estrada merits the name the hosts bestowed on their business: “Paradise in Portugal.” We had a good time there and enjoyed interacting with the hosts and with the other guests.

Not far from the majesty of the Monchique hills is this delightful hotel on the very pretty pictured lake, near the charming village of Santa Clara A Velha. Frank and Daniela are the charming owner hosts and they bend over backwards to make sure everyone has a great time. The food, cooked by Daniela is superb and varied. The wine list, as you would expect from the premier wine making centre of the country, (some would say of the whole Iberian peninsular), is not only a complete bargain but also full of gems.

I am not a birdwatcher, preferring all the lovely aquatic activities on offer here, but people come from far and wide to watch the huge variety of birds here, expertly guided by Frank.

Do come, this place is very very unusually special.

It is also exceptionally good value.

My friend and I spent 2 nights hoping to do some birding. Not only did we see some beautiful birds but we also had delicious home cooking, swam in a lake, and were made to feel very welcomed by the owners Frank & Daniela, and their attentive staff.
The surroundings are beautiful and this is truly an oasis in the middle of a typically hot and dry summer in the Alentejo.
Meals were served outdoors under vine covered roofs. Tables were adequately separated due to Covid precautions.
The room was comfortable with comfortable beds and bedding.
We took advantage of hiring Frank the owner for a morning bird watching tour. He has over 30 years of experience of living and birding in the area and was very eager to share his knowledge with us. The highlight was seeing the beautiful kingfishers zipping by and perching on several different areas of the lilly pad covered pond. Such a beautiful setting! We also saw water rails, grey wagtails, goldfinch, & black-capped warblers.
On the property we also saw golden orioles and a hoopoe. Just down the road we came across several bee-eaters.
There are fruit trees all around the property and the plums were ready for picking. We had plum crumble for dessert and Daniela even gave me a jar of plum jam to take home.
We are looking forward to return in the springtime when the wildflowers will be out.

We’d been looking forward to this holiday for a couple of years as it was initially delayed by Covid. So happy that we finally made it! The week was perfect in every way and exactly what we'd hoped for - beautiful accommodation, great food, lovely hosts, fantastic wildlife.

The Quinta is in a remote area, very peaceful with no traffic noise or intrusions, and has views over the Santa Clara lake. The lush garden is full of nightingales, golden orioles, swallows, Sardinian warblers, bees, butterflies, lizards and more.

We went out on 4 birding trips with Frank, all were well planned and flexible enough to take advantage of the best weather. Our favourite trip was to the Plains to see great and little bustard, black bellied sandgrouse and many other species, but all the trips were excellent. The Quinta is close to a range of Parque Naturals and a variety of habitats.

The food was expertly prepared by Daniela and team, was always varied & delicious, and often sourced from their garden. We really enjoyed sitting down together with other visitors and chatting about the days findings.

The rest of the staff were also great, with James and Elias always cheery and helpful, and never failing to solve any query or request very quickly. The friendly resident dogs were a bonus!

We felt like family by the time we left, we hope to go back soon. Thank you to the whole team at Paradise in Portugal.

Frank and Daniella have the most beautiful property I’ve ever seen. The Quinta’s garden thrives next to a beautiful lake, and all staff and guests alike go to great lengths to ensure a COVID safe environment.

It was our first time leaving the country in 2 years, so naturally we were a bit nervous, but there is ample space for everyone to be safely distanced and all the staff go to great lengths to ensure everyone feels safe.

If you’re looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful, natural setting then look no further. I will definitely be back!!
