We stayed here during our walk of Hadrian's Wall and enjoyed it thoroughly. The walk here from the path was a bit adventurous, but the reception by our hosts was warm and friendly. The room was large, and included an en-suite bathroom with a magnificent bath. After we had freshened up, the owners were nice enough to drive us to... More

This is a good place to stay for Hadrian's Wall Path, being fairly close to the path and a pub serving food. The room had a long deep bath with very hot water looking out onto an orchard which was lovely after a day's walk. The room and house were interesting and in keeping with the age of the property... Spent a wonderful night at this shabby chic establishment. Straun and Jenny were most welcoming and Straun was a fount of knowledge of the local area. Jenny booked a meal at a local pub and we were taken and collected at our convenience. It is a converted farmhouse but this adds character and there is an abundance of fascinating pictures... More

I have to agree with angellibrarian. The bad: - We seemed to be a burden to our hosts who couldn't wait to get us out of their hair - Our "ensuite double" did have a private bath, but it was the room next to our bedroom, so tricky to negotiate at night. - Bed was "deep valley"; shower required a... I don't think I've ever given a B&B only 2 stars before! We stayed one night at Matfen High House whilst walking Hadrian's Way. It was a strange stay - I felt more like a tolerated poor relation than a welcomed guest! It's understandable that our hostess wanted us to take our walking boots off before going up to our... More

All very county and pleasant but somewhat dis-organised and need to check quality of beds. Superb bedroom and bathroom but the double bed in need of new mattress? Provided lift to the Robin Hood pub as the Brewery had a function that evening. Need to understand that mobile phone service at pick-up point is working as we had to get... More

We stayed two nights for a wedding, our daughter in another room, sharing our bathroom. Breakfast is cooked to order and delicious, Struan's home made, still warm bread gives you an idea of the standard. Yes, the beds are a bit soft, but all three of us slept an unbroken 8 hours and woke to birdsong and sheep, with no... More

Stayed here for a family wedding. Rooms very very dated. No plugs worked. No heating worked. Absolutely freezing. Extra bed was a very very old camp bed. Uncomfortable Very cluttered rooms with personal paraphernalia. Shared bathroom with 3 other rooms. Breakfast was terrible.eggs were grey Owners were very rude and if we asked for anything (ie coffee at breakfast) it... More

I stayed here on my first night of a 6 day walking holiday. Struan very kindly picked me up from the nearby village. Unfortunately this initial positive start quickly disintegrated when I was shown my room. The bathroom has serious black mould clinging to the shower and window, the carpet is grubby and stained, the towels were found just piled... More
