We stayed here 4 nights, since we were visiting friends who live in Trang.
The hotel did not have many guests, I would think maybe max 20% of the rooms were booked.
The room was spacious and clean, we stayed at the 11th floor, with pool view.
It was not so isolated, you could hear other guests outside the room quite well. Luckily there were not many so we were not bothered by noise.
The pool area is nice, we visited it a couple of times, and one day we were there all alone. Like a private pool!
Breakfast buffet (included in the price 1500 baht/night) was unfortunately not good, except for the omelette which they made on order.
They played one (ONE!) Christmas song on repeat the whole time (a "jolly" version of "We wish you a merry Christmas") and when we heard it for the 20th time, we almost went insane.
The following days we went out to a café for breakfast.
Walking distance to the train station (city) approx 5-8 minutes.
There is a nice outside restaurant/bar which we visited every night, there are no other bars in the area that we found.
The staff here do not speak English very well though, we had a struggle ordering rice with the food... :) But Trang is not a big tourist city, so it is understandable.
The hotel has a small shop on the ground floor, here you can buy clothes, souvenirs, snacks and drinks at reasonable prices.

A great budget hotel in Trang, Thailand! Rooms have 3 prices ranging from about US$12-18 depending on room size and location. Rooms have cable TV with lots of channels in English, central air conditioning, and are nicely decorated. There's a coffee shop with decent food. It's only one block from the train station and the shuttle vans to the many islands in the area. Internet cafes are just around the corner. Request a room in the back because rooms facing the street can be noisy. Book directly with the hotel to get the best rate, as I saw much higher prices on internet sites. Probably the best budget hotel I stayed at in Thailand.

Go there if you are not fussy and can live with some stained carpet and sofa chairs and tables , fairly clean beds and sheets with pillows in your room and an old mostly marbled bathroom enough to meet your tolerance level. ! Though old, it is a well designed hotel and with renovation , it would be a very attractive hotel to stay for travellers . The location is excellent. There is a disco in the hotel itself and a coffee house with a band too. You will like the gym and the pool . There is also a convenience store facing the reception. Walk out and you can literally buy or eat whatever food of your choice mostly of Asian type. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the nearest 7 Eleven
The staff at the reception and elsewhere are generally not really hospital and friendly by Thai hotel standard. You have to get their service, not they look forward to serve you ! You do not notice senior managers coming around to ensure excellent service in the hotel..
The food in Thailand is generally very spicy and tasty. Beware if you are not used to the hot spicy Thai food otherwise you will " hurt" your tongue. The breakfast , Japanese and Thai foods served at the huge Pumpui restaurant are mostly tasty and reasonably priced and you will look forward to eating there again.
There are no taxis in Trang but the hotel provides limousine service and there are motor cyclists and Tuk Tuks to shuttle you if you do like them.
Be good in your sign language as most Thais do not speak English or other languages. I stayed there in the Deluxe room 1403 on the 13 & 14 May, 2013.

Stayed in one of the large suites for two nights on the 15th floor over the weekend. The room and bathroom were clean but the carpet and sofas were a little dirty due to old age. The hot water was tepid and neither room (came as a group with adjoining suites) had a functioning safe. The hotel pool is only 1 meter deep but the fitness room was spacious unlike other gyms I'd been to in Thailand. Best thing about my stay was the two hour massage at the 2nd floor spa for about $22.

Massage lady at this hotel asked if I wanted sex! When I reported it to hotel management (both in Trang & at Bangkok head office), basically they walked around the issue.

Package included a tour but it was actually a 1 hour use of a regular tuk (taxi) by driver who cant speak English and obviously not a trained guide. American breakfast was indigestible; everything tasted differently. After reporting it, they sent us to a "top class dim sum place" the following morning. The dim sums there were variations of pork with no flour of any sort, unlike in the states - and the hotel considers this appropriate for westerners?

Service was poor. Pool not in good condition. Hotel is run down. WIll never go to that hotel again. And am taking time to post this so alert other westerners NOT to go to that hotel.

Reported massage incident to Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) who is investigating.

There is nothing special about the Thumrin, which is an older hotel. It is clean and satisfactory on the average. The best parking is off the hotel but around the front entrance in the public parking area, no charge. The breakfast buffet was more the adequate with quite a bit of variety. The only issue was the lack of hot water for showering. The water never was better than cool. We even called hotel services and requested a technician to assess why we were not getting any hot water. He came but indicated that "it was not like your home, this is what it is." So you have to live with a cool shower, which means in and out very fast!! The a/c took a while to cool down the room but was more than adequate while sleeping.

Very large grand hotel - great service, speak good English and close to lots of amenities. Breakfast buffet was varied and always nice - we stayed three nights. The swimming pool looked great but we didn’t use it, but my brothers family did and they said it was nice. They have a gym you can use too. Rooms are spacious however the internet is intermittent but we weren’t really too fussed about that. Basically you need to log into the WiFi with a differnt code etc each time you leave/enter the hotel. Really central and great to use as a base to visit the islands/beaches.

As others have said, the hotel looks like it must have been something special back in the day, as the rooms are very big and the bathroom pretty decent. The style is a few decades out of date now, but still fine for a few nights.

Despite the tired decor, I would have been happy with this hotel if it wasn't for the noise. All is quiet until about 10pm, then the loud music from the club/bar/function rooms kicks in until about 3am. The walls hummed with the bass of the music... and we were 13 floors above all the action! Even the air con fan on max didn't drown it out. The reason for all the noise appears to be the hotel being a hub for weddings in the region; there was one both nights we stayed and another wedding car turning up the day we left, so it seems it is none stop.

Had no trouble with wireless in the lobby, free of charge and the staff were OK.

The breakfast is OK, with a varied selection of Thai dishes and some cereal and toast for those who don't want spicy food first thing in the morning.

I always like to schedule a stop in Trang in order to stay at this grand old hotel. The deluxe rooms are huge, the facilities are numerous and the staff is terrific.

As I am on a cycing tour through Asia, I called the Thumrin in Trang based upon the review in Lonely Planet Guide. The girl quoted me a single room at 1200 baht but when I arrived, they said no, it was 1600 baht. When I disputed the price, they brought a girl out show said she had told me 1600 over the phone. I said, look 16 and 12 don't even sound close but they insisted upon 1600 which I paid. When I asked about WiFi password, I was told I could buy a card for WiFi. I was amazed. I have stayed in over 50 hotels throughout Thailand in the past 2 months from price ranges of 300 baht per night to 2000 baht per night; all had free WiFi IN THE ROOM! I was then shown to my room and when I saw it had 2 single beds, I asked about a different room with a big bed and was told it was 500 baht more.

The room was extremely dirty and had a smell of cigarette smoke despite the fact that the entire floor had a sign for non-smoking. The carpet was filthy with cigarette burns, mold all over the baseboards of the room and ceiling, a large piece of the lighting panel in the bath was broken and exposed pipes overheard with dirt falling into the sink.

The mattresses were long worn out and not firm at all.

There was a master lighting box on the nightstand. When you hit the button to turn the lights off, this also turned off ALL power outlets in the room so you couldn't charge any electronic device over night. Further, at 1:30 am the lighting box started chirping an electronic noise which went on the rest of the night every 10 minutes.

Then you hear dogs barking all night long...no sleep for 1600 baht.

Just a totally disgusting hotel and all this crap for 1600 baht a night. I wouldn't stay in this hotel ever again if they were charging 100 baht. Absolutely fithly rooms and the staff at the front desk was anything but accomodating and friendly, including the front desk manager when I complained.

Stay away from this hotel!!
