Staying in a castle during a family road trip in Scotland what a dream !!! And it was just PERFECT in any ways !!! Unfortunately we could stay only one night because of our big road trip schedule but would loved to stay more.

The Loch Lomond Youth Hostel was once a mansion, so retains an impressive exterior as you arrive. It's also reputedly haunted, but needless to say we experienced no ghostly encounters. Our room had nice views across the loch to the hills beyond. The nearby town of Alexandria is a good place to pick up supplies. Public transport possibly offers a...

When my family and I travelled through Scotland, we didn't want to stay in the generic hotel setting, we had done enough of that. We decided to stay in Loch Lomond because we weren't looking for a fancy hotel, we were looking for a hostel with decent prices, basic necessities and a place we could make out own food. Loch...

I don't know how one would usually get to the hostel? We arrived at the train station late in the evening. Took a bus and then a long, dark and rainy walk along a high way. Something out a scary movie. The castle and surrounding area is beautiful. But not much else to do. One night was sufficient for us....

Ok, it does look like a 'true castle, the best YHA property', but, unfortunately, it's just the building and a couple of common rooms inside. It stands aside from the main road, so getting there by foot could be a challenge. We got a room with a back view, while the girls' toilets had a magnificent lake view! There are...

I read in one of the latest reviews rumors that the hostel is closing. I did some resarch on Google and it's sadly true! On the SYHA website I noticed that you can only book rooms until the 24th of September. I wonder why they are closing what they say it's the most beautiful hostel in Scotland and what they...

My teen sons and I spent one night here in transit to Glasgow. The 19th century "castle" is quite stunning, and many of the original features have been left intact. The grounds are bucolic and it's an easy walk from the bus stop on the adjacent motorway. The self-catering kitchen was large and well-eqipped and staff were appropriately helpful.

Want to stay in a Scottish castle? This youth hostel is in a beautiful 19th century castel with spectacular views over the countryside. The location is great, but after that it is just a youth hostel. The people on duty were very helpful and friendly, and the evening meal and breakfast we had were very nice. But room was nothing...

I only just noticed that someone posted that this place is closing! What a shame....it is the most impressive looking youth hostel I've ever stayed in. A Scottish palace with loads of character and atmosphere, mosaic floored lobby, stag heads mounted on the walls, wood panelling and a huge fireplace. It must have been a sumptuous home in its better...

I have stayed here twice over the last year. I visited last summer during a John O'Groats - Lands End cycle ride, and then I just had to come back and explore the area properly. The Youth Hostel is in a lovely old building not far from the banks of Loch Lomond. Its a bit of a walk from the...
