Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

Wonderful quiet establishment run by a multi-generational family. After each day in this hectic metropolis, it was lovely to come back here and relax in the beautiful Japanese baths. There are so many thoughtful touches in this place, including the lobby seating area with info

This was my fourth time staying at Ryokan Sawanoya and it was just as wonderful as each and every other time. Yanaka is a homey, old fashioned and very much residential area of Tokyo with lots of lovely shops in its little back streets. When you are at Sawanoya you feel as if

Located in a quieter suburban area but still within central Tokyo, it is very handy to the metro station. The family who run this place is very helpful. Especially the father who would advise us the weather everyday before we head out. The place is clean and tidy and very

Hey Julie - the baths are used individually. They have two private, unisex baths (or they did a year ago!) - they have occupied signs as you’ve seen in the pic and privacy curtains as well. James

We were upstairs in the larger room with ensuite. I am really allergic to dust - I was GREAT had no problems with asthma at all. Did not experience anyone smoking inside either. although that does happen in restaurants and bars! It can be tricky but if you shop around you will find good places to eat without smokers.

"All rooms are nice and look out onto the street in a quiet neighbourhood"
"Best is upper floors, away from the kitchen, if food smells are not your thing. Not unpleasant, just may not be everyone’s cup of tea ;-)"
"My room (33) was perfectly fine. Good airco, small balcony, thinnish walls (but quiet guest)."
"My tavel itinerary meant that I stayed in 3 different rooms, all were lovely, quiet and clean."
