Ellesmere is a stunning family-run, home-from-home, award-winning B&B in Castle Cary, near Bruton, featured in The Daily Telegraph, Country Life magazine and BBC Worldwide. It is a large, beautifully decorated three-floored, double-fronted Victorian property on the edge of town, a few minutes walk from the main high street, backing onto fields and stunning farmland owned by The Newt in Somerset. In 2023, the online search engine KAYAK awarded us Best B&B for the exceptional quality of our service and customer reviews. The rooms are individually decorated, are all a good size, have TVs, free wifi, kettles, breakfast drinks, mini fridges, hairdryers and use of an iron. Families and dogs are welcome. Parking is free and is either directly outside the house or in our drive on request. Our breakfasts are generous and include croissants, home-made granola and muesli as well as home-made compotes jams and marmalade, the ingredients for which are either sourced locally or from our garden. Our coffee and scrambled eggs are legendary and delicious bread is from a top local artisan baker. We cater for all dietary requirements and use as much of our own home-made or locally-sourced produce as possible. Please let us know allergies in advance.

Ellesmere House runs a service like no other. From the moment I entered this warm home I was treated with grace and professionalism, never feeling away from the comfort of my own home and homemade cooking. The decor and surroundings are out of this world - for what began as a quick getaway, turned into me imagining what it would be like to make myself a permanent resident in Castle Cary. All thanks to my hosts, Melanie and Martin. Thank you for being so advisable on where to walk and which restaurants to try during my quick, yet restful stay here. I will be returning to stay at Ellesmere House!

Just returned from this gorgeous B/B, the hosts Martin & Melanie are a joy to behold, the room was spotlessly clean, with everything you needed.
Nothing was to much trouble for them to make your stay stress free, from the delicious breakfasts (jams and compost, muesli & granola) all homemade. Martin was a wealth of information about best places to eat, pubs, and places for days out.
I recommend Ellesmere house to anyone thinking of staying with this delightful couple.
Ps they have 2 adorable dogs in Poppy & Willow ( who will melt your heart).
Thank you so much Martin & Melanie.
Tony & Shirley Quigley.

What a wonderful stay we had.
Martin and Melanie are the most perfect hosts who just cannot do enough for you. I had an issue which Martin sorted with a few trips to his local post office. Much appreciated.
Big bedroom, big bathroom a super duper breakfast which gives Martin the chance to show his culinary skills off to great effect! Everything is fresh and home made - do not pass over Melanie’s own made granola. Delicious.
The breakfast is taken at a communal table which gave us the chance to chats to other guests who were lovely...fellow Celts from Scotland and Ireland.
Thank goodness genuine hospitality is alive and thriving and especially in this marvellous bed and breakfast.

Top marks....top place, top host and hostess, highly recommended.

Mel & Martin are marvellous hosts. Nothing is too much trouble. Our room was on the top floor( steep stairs) The house is quirky, homely and beautiful. It's a real 'home from home' The bed was very generous and comfy. Our every need was catered for, the hosts going above & beyond for their guests.
The breakfast was large and again very generous, with home made Berry compote and lots of choice from cereals, to croissants and of course the full English ( just make sure you order the cooked breakfast the night before) Martin rustled up his famous scrambled eggs on toast for my first breakfast and it didn't disappoint!
We ate at the Bay tree one evening. The food was good old fashioned fare, not expensive and we enjoyed the evening. We also visited the Newt- expensive, and truthfully a bit under whelming ! On our last day we visited Hauser & Wirth - free to enter, lovely garden and an art exhibition as well. Highly recommend. Oh and I must mention the two little dogs who are absolutely adorable.
Thanks again to Mel & Martin for a truly memorable stay.

We stayed here on our way home from Plymouth for a couple of nights and what a find. What a fantastic stay. Thanks to Covid, we had the top floor to ourselves. The bed was so comfortable and the room had great views over the garden and the countryside beyond. Having a choice between a roll top bath or electric shower was great. Martin and Melanie could not have been more friendly or more helpful. Their local knowledge gave us so many opportunities to spend our days out and about. Their recommendations for eating out were great and Martin even offers a taxi service. The continental breakfast is as good as others say it is (and it's great ganola), but the optional full English is one of the best ever and the scrambled eggs lived up to their reputation. Poppy and Willow deserve their own special mention for being the most friendly of dogs. We will be returning next time we are in the area.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Ellesmere House. Such an engaging welcome from Martin set the scene, walking through the beautiful house built the excitement and opening the door to the gorgeous room, overlooking gardens and fields, had me beaming. We were made to feel so comfortable, lots of tea choices, coffee machine, hot chocolate, fresh milk in the mini fridge and luxury toiletries. Breakfast was delicious (Mel's fresh fruit compote was a revelation) and hilarious. Melanie and Martin are so warm, considerate and funny, I commented that it felt like having Christmas morning with complete strangers. We didn't want to leave - can't wait to go back. Linda

What a place! Martin & Melanie are so kind and accommodating. It really is a home from home, the views from the bedroom & bathroom are beautiful!
It was my birthday and Martin helped my partner sort a bottle of Prosecco which he put on ice in the beautiful garden for us to enjoy. He also provided a taxi service to a local pub he had recommended for a meal! Others are right, the granola really is the best!
The welcome from Poppy & Willow really made it. Thanks both & well stay again next time we’re in the are!

A beautifully appointed house with wonderful hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for Martin and Melanie. Luxurious linen and fluffy white towels with an invitation to dip into an array of gorgeous bath products. Delicious breakfast, we had the continental with Melanie’s amazing assortment of stewed fruit and homemade granola. We also enjoyed Martin’s legendary scrambled eggs and a delightful cooked breakfast on our second morning. Excellent advice on local restaurants and pubs and Martin very kindly fetched us from dinner so we could have a drink (or three). We will return!

The second time we have stayed here, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The very comfortable, elegant room - luxury bedding and thick fluffy towels, the gorgeous garden and delicious breakfasts with lots of home-made treats such as granola and fruit compotes. Melanie and Martin are charming and welcoming hosts, for whom nothing seems to be too much trouble.
