Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went for snack lunch with 9 of us in the middle of a days walking. Staff very happy to see us and cheery. Servive excellent. Sandwiches (I had brie, bacon and cranberry) and homemade soup were delicious, just what we needed. Would highly recommend.

We stayed one night and one night was plenty! Sadly The George is very much past its best, our bathroom was absolutely filthy dirty with a terrible shower and intermittent working main light. The room itself was spacious but again very dirty there were cobwebs all over the light covered in dust so had definitely been there a while. The mattress was very very old with springs that you could easily feel and every turn my husband made woke me up - it was also extremely hard. There is absolutely no sound proofing in the room and it has extremely thin walls! We were woken by people at. 6.30 on a Sunday morning- I think they must have been staff as the kitchen fans soon came on and bottles were being very loudly emptied into bins. The only saving grace was that the food was okay, we had supper and breakfast. The bar, restaurant and very much the toilets all also need a very good clean. I would have said all of this when we came to pay the bill but there were other people all around and at no point did that chap even ask if our stay had been okay, in fact he was very disinterested. All in all they definitely need to up their game as Castle Cary is an absolutely delightful place to visit and really needs somewhere nice to stay.

Stopped here for lunch as the new place up the road isn't open yet. A shame the Thai place has closed too. A quaint place from the 1500's with little rooms with tables in and a well stocked bar. All the meals we had were lovely, which is contrary to what previous reviewers have said, but we enjoyed them! Nice burgers with a generous helping of definately hand cut and cooked chips like the menu says, and nice tasting salad and coleslaw too. The fish and lamb platefulls were tasty too and we had to chase up a dessert which means they don't rush you eating there. Nice atmosphere with an open fire although it was not a cold day in March. Might even return but do not attempt parking through the archway unless you have a small car, park down the road.

Ordered the chicken and mushroom pie and looked ok until I cut into it. The second mouthful I came across had a two and half inch bone in it. Refused to pay and said reasons why and was told South African lady makes the pies and doesn’t understand !!! Could have been a child eating this!!!

We were passing through Catle Cary so we stopped here for lunch and what a find. The building is very quirky with lots of odd rooms here and there. The beef and Stilton sandwich on granary bread was delicious and such good value. The staff are friendly and efficient. We will definitely return

Today I had a nut roast in the hotel restaurant. It tasted terrible, and you'd have to get a magnifying glass out to spot the nut content. The consistency was like sludge. The waitress said she didn't know what the main ingredient was and offered for me to speak to the chef. I spoke to the chef outside (was that a pint in his hand?) who claimed the nut roast was nothing to do with him and I'd have to speak to his colleague. His colleague didn't make an appearance to explain the ingredients either. The woman who appeared to be head waitress offered a 50% discount, albeit £8 still seemed a lot for 3 small pieces of roast potato, a portion of watery-tasting insipid vegetables, and a huge dollop of disappointment. Perhaps noticing I was still pretty pissed off, the nut-roast bill was then written off altogether. But, just to be clear, I'd much rather have had a tasty meal at full price, the kind of meal for which you'd gladly leave a tip. After a busy week, during which I hadn't had time for any main meals, I was really looking forward to a hearty veggie Sunday roast, but my appetite and optimism was shot to bits by this sub-par experience. It's insulting to vegetarians and vegans to be fobbed off with the cheapest of ingredients, with terrible cooking to boot. My Dad paid the bill for his meal and our coffees, and the £4 tip he gave was probably about right to cover the cost of the insipid-tasting vegetables that I'd eaten.

It's been more than a decade since we ate here - the staff, the place and four out of five meals were great and on that basis would go again. It's difficult to blame anyone but the flat iron steak was too tough to eat while everything else was good!

The cooked breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Every single item on the plate had been deep fried. Dripping with fat and totally overdone. Who deep fries everything ? Surely the bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes could have been grilled ? The fried bread was so overdone it was impossible to even cut. Spoke to lady behind bar she said “I’ll pass your feedback to the chef” …. Chef !?? Really. In my opinion that’s not a chef cooking like that. Shame as great location and a very polite young waitress who was very helpful and polite.

Lovely place with reasonable prices for great food. Wonderful ambience due to the character of the building which is furnished so well. Service by very warm, friendly people who fussed over our dog, which was an added bonus! No long waits and everything done to make you comfortable and well attended to. We loved our meat sharing platter along with Thai duck, all cooked to perfection. My partner took the senior offer of a roast dinner which also was delightful and included a pudding at the price of £12.99! A pub worth going back and aback to!
