Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hotel is nothing like the photos on their website! Dark corridors, main door locked at 8pm when we got back from Dunkirk, only one working electric socket in very small room. Room is VERY BASIC, only 1 sports channel on TV is in English, bathroom is passable, sheets were clean, beds rock hard, bar was closed as was restaurant so nothing to eat or drink. No tea/coffee facilities in room! Snack machine in corridor... €1.30 for a can of coke! 😮 Would only stay again if nowhere else available and was totally desperate. Sorry but not really worthy of the two stars it has.

We stopped at The Dune Hotel as we were cycling to the Port and there was a terrific thunderstorm. We could not continue and asked for a room and if they could store the bike. We were relieved that they said yes. We were dismayed by the dinginess of the corridors and the standard of the room but glad to be under cover. The bedding was clean. To our dismay there was a cohort of CRS riot police staying at the hotel still dressed in uniform and carrying weapons drinking and shouting, this continued until 3.30am in the morning. We are under the impression that this is not an unusual occurrence. Personally I was frightened of their behaviour but felt helpless to complain not wanting to run the gauntlet of men to reception. We did complain in the morning but could see the staff who were very young had no hope of controlling any difficult situation This was a very disappointing and unnerving end to a 3 week stay in France where we had enjoyed a mixture of courtesy and helpfulness that we will make sure overcomes this experience

Very strange smell on arrival, throughout the hotel. Boys said it smelt like cat food. Very dark and dated hotel, reception and rooms. Chap on reception was friendly enough and his English was very good. The room was very dated and basic although the bedding on the beds was clean. The bathroom was clean-ish but very dated, the towels were clean but had seen better days. We paid for breakfast which was very disappointing, we got down at 8.30 an hour before it finishes. Two croissants left and no coffee, they eventually refilled the pastries and coffee - 9am!! Not worth the money at all.

Given wrong room, charged credit card before we found this out. Would not refund us. Staff do not speak English and are rude. Hotel corridors where pitch black. We where told the restaurant was full up when we could see it wasn't. Parking was a nightmare hotel was full of police vehicles. Avoid at all costs!

This might have been acceptable 40 years ago when everything was new, but now it is tatty, shabby and not at all nice. Good points: it was clean - sheets, towels and floors were fresh and clean, for sure. Bad points: - beds were old and uncomfortable (they even had blankets and sheets instead of duvets - never expected to see that in a hotel) - shower and bathroom were tatty and in need of some maintenance - service was odd (but helpful), especially at breakfast (we were the last ones down and the staff were cleaning the floors around us). Verdict - if you are desperate for something close to the ferry port, this place will keep you dry, but so will the back seat of your car.

The best I can say about this hotel is that it was close to the ferry and the sheets were clean. The shower was grubby and had bits broken off it. The double bed sagged in the middle so much we couldn't sleep in it - so we had to swap for the children's two single beds and they had the double. (They're smaller so didn't roll together so much!) The breakfast was served in a room with all the chairs on top of the tables apart from four chairs for us to sit on, whilst a lady mopped the floor around us. It was a very strange experience. I honestly couldn't recommend it - there must be other places to stay that are nicer. I wish I'd looked around more, then I could have said this was a last resort but it wasn't - we chose it - and I really wish we hadn't.

I am constructing this at 2:15am, with the kind gentleman in no 9 and his TV on extremely loud. I tapped on the wall a couple of times to make him aware of his noise. The Gendarmarie even asked what was going on to him and appeared to accept his explanation, with no instruction on turning down the noise. This is as there are numerous Gendarmarie staying at this establishment, perhaps on overtime at the Channel Tunnel ? On speaking to the person on the end of the telephone serving as a remote receptionist as there is no staff here past 11pm, he actually denied I was in room no 7. What a truly uncomfortable environment.

The Dune Hotel is best summed up as basic, clean and in an easy-to-find location but that is about it! We stayed there for two nights and yes it was cheap but the bar was closed, no food or drink was available and the pool table was out of order so there was literally nowhere to go but the room. Disappointed by this hotel but Grand-Synthe was pleasantly surprising if you explore on foot.
