Upon arrival we were greeted by Kevin, he guided us to our room and gave us a run through of the room and surrounding areas. The room was very well presented with good quality furniture that is modern and in great condition. The room was very clean and tidy and not over crowded. The view from the large floor to ceiling windows was mesmerizing with views over the Tyne valley. If you are looking for the big city party life then this is not the place for you, if on the other hand you are looking for total peace, quiet and relaxation then this is definitely the place to visit.
The evening meal was fantastic for the price, delivered to your room, piping hot and a good sized portion. The steak pie was perfect, large chunks of steak with a small amount of gravy, probably one of the best steak pies I've ever had. The breakfast was fantastic, again decent size portion, piping hot and delivered to the room.
There is no Wifi in the rooms but still get decent signal on your phone on O2 and EE.
Would I go back??? in a heartbeat is the answer to that. We only stayed one night but now wish we had of stayed for the week. Even after one night we left feeling relaxed and refreshed.
Each apartment has its own parking bay right outside the door so easy vehicular access
There are multiple bird feeders around the rooms that are frequented by a multitude of different birds and squirrels. Quite entertaining to watch

An overnight stay at Layside gets a 5* rating on all accounts. This was an outstanding hotel which ticks all the boxes for a comfortable and relaxing stay whilst not breaking the bank in terms of cost.

The service from the family was spot on. Relaxed, welcoming and friendly. They were so accommodating and their passion and commitment to making my stay a pleasant one was evident.

The facilities themselves were of a very high standard and it was obvious a lot of thought had gone in to the accommodation. The bed was super comfortable and I had a great night's sleep. I doubt there are many hotels with as beautiful views as you'll find here.

I chose to have an evening meal at Layside and I would definitely reccomend the same choice to others. Meals are delivered to your door and the quality was spot on. Breakfast was also delicious and set me up well for the day. Having meals delivered to your room just felt very hassle free but the nice dining table with a view didn't make it feel like you were eating in a bedroom in so ways.

Perhaps the bonus treat of the stay, and the reminder of the beauty of the location, was the badger who appeared at the bedroom door and didn't seem at all bothered by my taking photos of him. I don't think I can credit the hosts for this this but it was a lovely addition to the stay none the less and just brings you back to what an enchanting place this is.

I would 100% recommend a stay at Layside and will definitely return again.

We stayed here for 2 nights for a short break and had a wonderfully relaxing couple of days. It's a great idea - the privacy of a woodland lodge with the comforts of a family B&B. The spacious rooms are located in a separate block, overlooking beautiful open countryside and are excellently equipped. The bed is comfortable, the shower powerful and hot, and the tea tray well equipped with fresh milk in the fridge.

Then there is the food - breakfast delivered to your room with a choice of hot items, yoghurt, porridge, smoothies and plenty of coffee and tea to set you up for the day. We would definitely recommend the evening meals too, all homemade main courses and puddings, delivered to your door to enjoy in the privacy of your own room.

The owners have created something special here, and we will definitely be back.

A truly special location. The accommodation is perfectly appointed and well thought out. Spacious and ideal for a few days with gorgeous views and active wildlife (nature spotter galore!)

The attention to detail from Kevin and Sophie really shows, fantastic shower, the comfiest bed I've ever slept in and also welcoming the local wildlife with bird feeders by your window making a wonderful start to the morning.

We ate on two of our three nights. The second having the starters rather than a full meal. All were excellent but the corn beef hash is the breakfast must do.

Looking forward already to a return visit.

Would highly recommend Layside to anyone looking for a few days of countryside views, amazing homemade food and great walks on your doorstep. We had the perfect 2 days here, great location for Hadrian's Wall and Sycamore Gap. The room itself has beautiful views of the rolling hills, we were able to watch sheep and birds right from our bed. Kevin was an amazing host, provided all the useful information we needed but completely gave us our privacy too. The food was perfect and exactly what was needed after a long day of walking.

Myself and my partner had a fab stay at Layside for his 30th birthday celebrations. We were meant to be visiting in January, but due to lockdown the stay had to be pushed back until May. Sophie and Kevin were so accommodating and let us change the date with no hassle at all.

The room was spotless and beautiful, and they even left my partner a cake for his birthday with a belated birthday message on a little chalk board. Was such a lovely touch.

Breakfast was also faultless- delivered in a crate/basket and still piping hot. Thoroughly enjoyed eating it at the little table, looking out the window at the stunning view of Sycamore Gap in the distance (we were in the lodge closest to the house so others may not have that view). We didn’t expect the view so that was also a lovely bonus.

Would definitely recommend and would 100% stay again.

Thanks Sophie and Kevin!

We stayed here for 2 nights and would highly recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere quiet with easy access to great walks and Hadrians Wall.

The dinner package is perfect if you want to relax at the end of the day to enjoy good food and fantastic views.

The bed was super comfortable, the room was really warm and very clean. Parking is directly outside and the lodge is close to the famous Sycamore Tree and Housesteads section of Hadrians Wall.

This was one of my favorite places I stayed while hiking Hadrian's Wall in September 2023. The owners were so accommodating and responsive. The lodging itself was so comfortable and relaxing, made even better by the wonderful near floor-to-ceiling windows. There were also little moments of attention to detail, which any guest would appreciate. For example, there were a number of birdfeeders placed in the trees surrounding the lodging, and in the room, a small book on local birds and a pair on binoculars were provided. I also appreciate they use locally-made products. To top everything, were the fantastic meals that were provided (which was requested in advance, though you may be able to order day of). Honestly, if the owners opted to produce a cookbook, I would consider purchasing one! While the location wasn't as close to Hadrian's Wall as some of the other places I stayed along the way, what you get in return is so worth it. Out on the main road, there is the option to catch a local bus which can bring you close to several Hadrian's Wall Path access points, as well as some of the area museums/historical sites, like Vindolanda (another stop I highly recommend). I would, without a doubt, stay here again!

We recently stopped over at Layside for two nights, on our Hadrian's Wall walk. If I were to summarise our stay at Layside, it would be 'very classy' and a great location to visit Vindolanda. The evening meal and breakfasts that we ate were very well cooked and presented - we loved Kevin walking out to the lodges to deliver the meals. The lodges are well appointed, comfortable, with a great shower and lovely outlook over a shallow valley and livestock filled fields. Both Kevin and Sophie were friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and more than happy to help and advise, where they could. My only suggested improvement would be to maybe add a long-handled squeegee to the bathroom, as the shower is so good that the wet room can get ..........well, a little wet after a lovely long shower! 🙂

We stayed here for a night doing the Hadrian's wall walk and it was one of my favorite of all the places we stayed.

Kevin and Sophie have thought of everything that make it such a relaxing stay, from floor to ceiling windows overlooking the gorgeous countryside, dreamy beds a modern bathroom with hotel style amenities and perfectly secluded.

You can order drinks ahead of time and they are waiting chilled in the room upon your arrival as well as order a delicious dinner for the evening that is delivered by Kevin to your room and same with the breakfast.

It was such a wonderful stay and a beautiful, relaxing break from the wall trek but even if not doing the wall walk it would be a wonderful place to stay to experience the serene English countryside in a beautiful setting with the luxury comforts of an expensive hotel. Highly recommend!
