3 of us stayed in s room with 2 double beds. It was great, Huge comfortable rooms. clean and tidy. Jess the landlady was brilliant. She couldn't do enough for us. She arranged our taxis for the evening, recommended places close by to eat. Added bonus being a pub you can have a drink while getting ready

Staff pleasant. Room clean Music blaring from pub through to room until 11.pm . Bed creaked everything we moved. No WiFi in bedroom. Booked a table on line for evening meal. No food served, even though the sign outside said pub food. Booking.com also showed bar and knife and fork. Only did a roast on a Sunday. Breakfast was either cereal or a cooked breakfast. No fruit juice. We told the lady behind bar we had table booked when we arrived. She said OK. We went down at 7.45 to ask for menu and was told, ' oh, we don't do food except Sunday Roast. Did you book on line?' I said yes and she said the ladt landlady did food but they didn't. We had to go out in the rain to find somewhere to eat. My husband is elderly and we booked because it said pub food. Instead No food but loud music until 11pm and creaky, hard bed and no WiFi in bedroom

Room ok, but no breakfast as advertised. I couldn’t find anyone to hand back my door card to so had to post through the letterbox. I wouldn’t recommend as a place to stay. Needs to employ more staff. Also would benefit from weeding the outside and updating the inside.

we arrived last minute after booking a room online with a 16 month old baby after driving 6 hours that day, around 6 pm, exhausted. In a strange turn of events, the room wasn't supposed to be available for another month as the pub is now in the hands of new owners, and we caught them off-guard. however, they went well above the expected service. within a half an hour they had the room ready, had us a cooked dinner (the kitchen had been closed as well), and found a baby cott in the local village for us to use. In the morning they had a full English, hot and ready for us. they could have easily turned us away but they gave 110% to make us as comfortable as possible. Absolutely wonderful.

I found myself needing urgently to find accomodation in the area due to a traumatic family emergency. The Landlady was helpful and accomodating and simply could not have been more kind. After the first night I was unsure if I needed further night(s) and the landlady kindly said she would leave me pencilled in so I could let her know when I was able. I was offered the utmost support in traumatic circumstances, the room - with full ensuite - was immaculately clean with a really great tray with tea, coffee (proper stuff too!) a flask with fresh milk and biscuitsand there was a lot of flexibility about when I could get breakfast (I'm not keen on early rising!!). I was told Devon is a kind place with nice people, I now see how it has that reputation. Thank you Stowey and thank you Paula.

Had a fabulous roast lunch here today. Plenty of meat and fresh vegatables, even cauli and brocoli cheese! All perfectly seasoned and very tasty. Friendly bar staff and nice atmosphere. Will definitely return

We checked in on the 29th July 2022, the room was ok but when we came back from dinner at another pub in the village we were notified with a knock on the door by the bar manager that breakfast was unavailable in the morning. Apparently, this was due to the fact that the chef was unwell (later on this proved to be a lie and the chef was indeed the landlady who didn't want to get up and make us a breakfast). We were handed a small cash refund from the bar manager but it isn't acceptable and if breakfast wasn't included, we would have stayed somewhere else. Unfortunately, it was also karaoke night (we were not informed about this beforehand) and our room was directly above the pub. Our child or us couldn't get to sleep until 2am as even though the karaoke continued until 1am, the drunk customers were hanging around outside our window shouting / revving vans / screaming etc. I did speak to the landlady around 10:30pm requesting that the noise needs to stop due to it impacting all of us being able to sleep. Even though they said that the volume was turned down, it wasn't and they simply didn't care about the guests who are staying there and only care about selling drinks to drunk people singing karaoke. In the morning, we complained to the bar manager who wasn't at liberty to issue a refund etc, the landlady appeared in the pub but didn't apologise and was in her dressing gown (not very professional). Basically, overnight guests mean nothing to the management but if you want to get drunk and be noisy / disruptive then they will look after you. I didn't want to write a review like this but the management showed us no respect and didn't listen to our complaints. Therefore, this is the only way to get our voice heard. A full refund should have been provided on check-out as we couldn't sleep and didn't get breakfast. In fact, even if they paid me to stay there I wouldn't it was that bad. Not the country village pub you may expect.

Response from Paula Milton, Owner at The Stowey Arms
Responded 11 Aug 2022
Thank you for your review, we are sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your experience at The Stowey Arms. To address some of the points you made... Unfortunately as explained on the evening the chef (who is indeed also the landlady, very common practice) was taken ill during the evening food service, it was decided that breakfast for all guests would have to be cancelled, all guests were given a refund and advised of local venues where they could obtain breakfast, an offer which you accepted. The following morning shortly after your departure, the landlady was admitted to hospital where she remained for a week. The pub does offer karaoke and live music regularly, which is advertised on our website where you booked your stay. All live music is strictly performed within our licensing guidelines including volume and hours permitted. As curtesy when you complained about the noise, the volume was turned down and all exterior windows and doors closed, to limit disturbance. A Pub does of course have people who drink and sit outside, we have never experienced any complaints about our customers volume or behaviour either inside or outside. We appreciate your comments and have taken them on board, however as you can see from our reviews this is not a common opinion from our guests, including the guests staying in the other 2 rooms on the night in question. Many Thanks
