Howay and head for the hills! Swept up in the wilds of the North Pennines, a once-upon-a-time abbot’s guesthouse sits proudly in the honey-stoned village of Blanchland. Wallow in the warmth of our bedrooms, lovingly soothed with Pennine hues and all the creature comforts. Relish in the spoils of The Bishop's Dining Room and the notorious Hilyard, where food that harks of heritage and skill is just made for feasting and passing around. In the kitchen, we chase the seasons and in our vaulted bar, we celebrate them... We love a bit of banter, some bar bait and a good craic! As the old girl creeks, we listen affectionately to eight hundred magnificent years of tales... of monks and bishops, Lords and merry-makers. A sanctuary once for the pious is now all yours for the taking. With moors that shout out adventure right on the doorstep... get out, plot north, walk, cycle or explore... then head home to kick off your boots, hang your hat and stay a while at our 4 star country house hotel.

Nestled in the serene village of Blanchland, the Lord Crewe Arms hotel is highly regarded for its comfortable and immaculately clean rooms, complete with cozy amenities like tea and cookies. Guests have often highlighted the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the hotel, which manages to blend luxury with a homely charm, including its inviting garden spaces and historic dining areas.
While the picturesque location is perfect for leisurely activities, opinions on value for money and service are mixed, with some reviewers pointing out overpriced meals and inconsistent service.

The Lord Crewe arms is perfect 😊
After a stunning drive over the Penines , this village is very special , it is a conservation village and the Lord Crewe Arms is at the heart of it, a fascinating building with quirky features, amazing fireplace and a gorgeous dining room .
Our bedroom was just perfect in every way , the bed was like sleeping in a great big squishy marshmallow ! Beautiful roll top Bath, generous size and warmly furnished making it so relaxing and comfortable .
The meals are beautiful and I loved the Crewe smoked salmon for breakfast - I have never tasted salmon like it ! Friendly , helpful staff make this a beautiful and outstanding place to explore this region.
COVID measures are Firmly in place With staff wearing masks , one way system and sanitisers and this worked well.

Dear c7225. Thank you for your kind words and 5* review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay here at The Crewe, especially the 'great big squishy marshmallow' beds. Our Housekeeping team really appreciated that comment! I am so pleased your enjoyed our smoked salmon too. It is cured and smoked on site and it has a unique flavour and texture - once tasted - never forgotten. I look forward to hopefully welcoming you back again soon. Kind Regards, Marie Beckett, Front of House Manager

stayed in a superior room with a sitting area downstairs and bedroom, bath and shower upstairs accessed via a narrow circular staircase. It was really cosy and well equipped with a wood burning stove if you wished to use it. Bed was really comfortable and the shower was hot and efficient..
Ate in the restaraunt each night and the food and wines were really good. Great chef doing some interesting food with lots of choice for both vegans and vegetarians. Much food sourced locally, Good value wine list both by the bottle and by the glass.
They provided walking routes if you want something active. altogether a great experience

Dear LondonWelshboyo, I was delighted to read how much you clearly enjoyed your stay with us here at 'The Crewe' in one of our suites. The 5 * is much appreciated. I am pleased you picked up on what head chef Emma and her team are doing here to create a full flavoured, bold menu using seasonal produce. Including creating interesting vegan and vegetarian options. Nothing is ever too much trouble with a little notice and preparation. I will pass on your lovely compliments to the team and hopefully welcome you back in the future. With Kind Regards Marie Beckett Front of House Manager

Stayed one night in this lovely old small hotel in the pretty stone-built village of Blanchland set in valley in the foothills of the Pennines. Our 'cosy double' room was indeed cosy and attractive and was across the village square from the main hotel building. Very well appointed en suite bedroom though the loo seat was loose. We ate dinner in the historic downstairs restaurant in the main building which was a bit austere and 'cold', but the food was very good though expensive. In the morning we ate breakfast in the upstairs restaurant which was warmly decorated, light and preferable. The breakfast was excellent.
Overall it was a lovely place to stay but a bit pricey.

A mixed experience. We spent 3 nights here and had a meal in each night, spending over £1000 for our visit for 2 of us. Some staff were friendly and attentive. Due to the fact we had not read a very long email sent prior to checking in, we failed to pre book our breakfast time for each morning. This meant we had to change our plans on one day due to the limited slots being available. The guy on reception was very blunt and told us everyone else had booked their slots.. Yes I have checked and we did send you the email! Now if he had changed his tone and said I'm very sorry but I cannot book you in at any other time, but how about we do room service for you that morning, this would have been a much nicer experience. The cleaners forgot to replenish the uht milk pots so I called reception for some and there was no answer. The rooms are in converted cottages, but they are very modern, like a chain hotel in style, with no character and no sound proofing. Every morning we would hear the people downstairs leaving as they shut the doors or spoke. We could hear music from another room too. Our room had a birds nest outside the window and what must have been formed over a long time was a very large pile of bird droppings that was directly outside the window opening and obvious for anyone to see. Photo attached. On the Saturday night at 22.30 in their bar, it was clear the staff wanted to go home, as soon as we were the last people there, they turned off the music and started to mop up around us. We took the hint and left. If they had called last orders or advised they would be closing soon that would have been different. They charge a premium, but the experience does not live up to it. A number of the staff are lovely, but a few of them let the place down which is a real shame.

Dear tinker_lovejoy, I have read your review carefully and some of your comments will led me to speak to a few key team members here to gather some information and see what improvements can be made. This is because we take feedback seriously and I am disappointed to read you have had a less that perfect experience. I do wish you had brought your concerns to a Duty Manager's attention whilst you were staying, so we may have done our best to put them right as soon as possible. Although I understand you may find it easier to write a review. The birds that nest each spring can sometimes be seen as inconvenience . Unfortunately, once they have nested there is very little we can do until the chicks have fledged and 'flown the nest.' We have invested in some specialist bird boxes around the property to encourage their use but some species return to favoured spots year in and year out and I am sure you can appreciate that controlling nature is a challenge. I wish you all the best. With Kind Regards Marie, Front of House Manager

We stayed here for the night, was a present we had an accommodation and dinner voucher. Room did not disappoint and staff at reception friendly and welcoming. Lots of little nice touches, bath robes, lovely variety of teas and a coffee machine in the room. Lots of lovely fluffy towels and a bath and shower. Room was spotless and very tastefully decorated. Room was in an annexe off the hotel, we were on the bottom floor and did find that we could hear the people upstairs quite clearly, moving about using the bath/shower and tramping up and down the stairs, so if your a light sleeper ask for a room upstairs. There is no phone signal although the wi fi is first class. Masks were worn by all staff and most residents when moving about.
Next problem was we had a voucher for a 3 course dinner valued at £35 each, menus givendid not have any prices on them so we didn’t know how much items were! There wasn’t a lot to choose from the menu one vegetarian meal chicken dish 2 fish rest steak of one kind or another. Starters were a bit limited also and quite a few things on the menu were no longer available. We had some sour dough bread which amounted to 2 1/2 slices of bread which was £5 bit excessive we thought. I had a tomato and feta starter priced at £9 a bit pricy for basically some leaves a few tomatoes and four small cubes of feta, pate for my husband which wasn’t too bad at £7. We both had sirloin but it was served with chips and again some salad leaves £28 each no onion rings mushrooms or even a tomato. Husband had a pint the bill was £91 our voucher was for £70 not sure how the voucher was ever going to pay for a three course meal; would be a good idea just to put voucher rather than for a 3 course meal. Shame about this as it truly spoilt our stay, the place is lovely and truly worth a visit but you need to firstly put prices on your menu and include things that are not quite so pricey.

Dear MAGGIESWScotland, Thank you for taking the time to put together a very comprehensive review. I am pleased to read many positives comments and feel I need to respond on some of the negatives. Yes, I would agree if you have a more noisy (possibly less considerate) neighbour their movements especially up and down stairs when carrying baggage out can be heard. With us being a listed building there are some limitations on the amount of sound proofing that can be achieved. We DO put prices on all our menus, for both lunch and dinner. Breakfast is the exception as it's included in the room rate. The price is as a 'number', at the end of each item description and you may have over looked this perhaps as we do not use a ‘£’ sign. The £35 for food allowance in our Dinner, Bed & Breakfast package is calculated out on food and does not include any drinks. It will cover a starter, main course and dessert if chosen in the mid-point categories. If you chose a more pricey starter then it would need to be balanced with a less pricey main course for example. Starters over the last few months have been priced from £7 - £13, main courses are generally £16/£17/£18 up to £28 (eg Sirloin Steak or whole Brill) and desserts £6 - £9. A premium starter option such as dressed Whitby crab, is currently priced at £13 and a quality steak - such as a Sirloin – is £28. A whole North Sea Lobster will attract a price of approx £38. I think if a large sirloin steak was priced on the menu at £17, I would be very concerned about the welfare standards of the producer and the quality of the butcher or supplier. We only select fish and meat from highly reputable suppliers and pay a premium for quality assurance. Although I appreciate it is unlikely from your feedback, should you decide to visit us again, please contact me direct and I would be more than happy to help you with selections on our menu or indeed put you in the very capable care of any of our fabulous 'Crewe'. With Kind Regards Marie, Front of House Manager

I reviewed the Lord Crewe after our second stay back in 2017 (first stay was 1974!). Despite the impostion of Covid-19 protocols we had a wonderful time enjoying the very relaxed, friendly and humorous atmosphere at this wonderful hotel.
The warmth of the welcome we received from front of house manager, Marie, extended through all the staff with whom we had contact over our two days at the Lord Crewe. We stayed in a little suite, Whiteheaps, overlooking the village square, It was extremely comfortable and having our own front door was good from a Covid viewpoint and made dog-walking easier (our Labrador appreciated her comfy bed and the dog treats, but we didn't let her order from the doggy room service menu).
As during our last visit, we ate one night downstairs and the other night in the beautiful, light and airy dining room. The menus is the same in both places. The flatiron steaks were cooked to perfection and are as memorable as the cheeses that followed. Breakfast is a treat with our favourite dishes being the overnight oats and the smashed avocado and eggs on sourdough.
The location of the Lord Crewe is delightful and we were lucky enough with the weather to be able to do some lovely walks including around the Derwent Reservoir.

Dear Beancounter27, It was an absolute delight to read your review. Thank you for providing some content that will be both useful to guests reviewing our little corner of paradise here in Blanchland and also the fantastic feedback for everyone at 'The Crewe'. We all need a boost at the moment, as hospitality has been having a tough time this year. And those that have chosen it as their vocation are working very hard and genuinely love to read how guests needs have been met at every stage of their stay. The team work hard to deliver upon their promises and be the very best they can be every day. From the preparation of the rooms, to the menu sourcing full flavoured seasonal produce and attentive service. We are proud to be a naturally friendly, relaxed and sometimes a little bit 'cheeky' team who really care about the guest experience. I will make sure your feedback is passed onto everyone at 'The Crewe'. Please come and stay again, with your Labrador dog, and maybe experience a different season. With Kind Regards Marie Front of House Manager

Me and my partner stayed here for 2 nights when it first opened after the lockdown period. We stayed in a one of the cottages opposite and it had everything we needed including some maps of the local area. We were reassured by all the things in place for COVID-19 including one way systems, hand sanitiser and cleaning of tables. The bar wasn’t open but drinks were served in the garden area which was lovely. All staff were really friendly and helpful. Evening meals were lovely as were breakfasts all table service.

My husband brought me to the Lord Crewe arms for a birthday surprise, and I absolutely loved it. The village and pub are so pretty, and the staff were friendly and welcoming from the start. We stayed in one of the rooms across the road from the main pub, which was very spacious and well equipped. Dinner was delicious and there was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant. We were lucky enough to enjoy a drink in the Crypt bar - it was all Covid secure and social distancing was adhered to.
Breakfast was lovely with a good selection, and we enjoyed one of the recommended walks across the moor afterwards - the lady on reception was very helpful in suggesting which one to do.
There is no phone signal in the village, but the Wifi worked perfectly well so you're not completely cut off!
All in all it was a lovely stay and I hope to go back before too long.

17 of us spent a lovely night here, staying in a variety of rooms - all excellent!
Dinner was superb, catering for tastes from 6 to 80 and served in our own private room downstairs was a perfect setting.
Throughout the stay all the staff were the perfect mix of friendly and professional, Tara our waitress deserving a special mention, but everyone went out of their way to be helpful.
Was also pleasantly surprised how peaceful it was, despite being fully booked.
Can’t wait to go back.

I was taken by the excellent website and was disappointed that the reality did not live to my expectations after spending 4 nights there. The email correspondence with the hotel reflected the feel good of their website and professionalism.
The reception staff’s welcome did not make a good impression, always a bad sign which proved confirmed by the rest of the serving staff, well trained but on the whole not personable. The regimen of allocated tables and times seems more reminiscent of a care home than a hotel.
The dinner menu does not offer a great deal of choice, though the menu changes slightly daily, not a problem if you are staying a night but if you are staying a few nights, you might run out of choices.
Downstairs, we had one of the few “comfortable“ chairs. Upstairs, the more comfortable dining room access is by steep stairs.
Breakfast is a mixed affair: a reasonable choice but with some items not available. Smallest juice glasses I have ever seen.
Do not expect to be able to have a pre dinner drink in the Crypt bar as there are only 2 tables. But should you be so lucky as to be there on a warm day there are plenty of picnic style tables in the garden.
As an aside, I am not sure what justifies the prices The Lord Crewe Arms charges for rooms which can only be described as run of the mill. Maybe it is the scarcity of accommodation in the area or the pretty village setting.
