The Porthole is a B&B with a difference. An independent building ensuring total privacy with your own parking spot this stunning find is unique. The large 6ft bed where you can look out to sea, nautical decorated bathroom with full bath and shower and your own kitchenette where breakfast is left for you to help yourself at a time of your choosing means a get away from it all break. The owners are on hand to give any help needed. The views are spectacular over the beach and sea towards Whitby Abbey cannot be done justice by photographs. Craigmore with 3 bedrooms has the same magnificent views and can be used with The Porthole to make accommodation for 9 people. Come and see for yourself. Craigmore welcomes dogs

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

The accomodation is really nice as stated in the reviews below if you don't mind the host who is unprofessional, unfriendly, unreliable and most of all mean. It says that breakfast is provided which is partly true as long as you are not too hungry. You have to beg for every addition, like a bit more butter, jam, eggs. You only get what she thinks is enough and this are very small portions of jam and butter. We had to go shopping so we didn't have to ask for butter and jam every day. We seldom got a respons to any inquiries nor did she answer the door and she never showed up. Just really unpleasant. I would never ever go back there. We have travelled in England for 3 weeks now and were always at places where we were treated friendly and with respect but don't expect that from Helen.

I am really sorry I did not meet this couple’s expectations. Please see my comment from the previous review posted before this comment. No advice prior to visit was read. I am sorry they did not like the selection of fruits, the home made jam and marmalade, I tried my best, unfortunately I was not at home when they rang the bell but I made every possible effort to see them. Fortunately if you read previous comments 99.9% of people love their stay here

An idyllic hideaway, with a view of beauty. A perfect place to relax and chill. Our host was very attentive and welcoming. The accommodation is very well presented, clean and tidy. A lovely touch with homemade breakfast food. Sandsends beach is unspoilt.

Thank you so much, it was lovely to meet you. I love your comment about taking note of instructions as to how to find The Porthole- I have just had people staying who said ‘we don’t read instructions’ - they got lost, were 11/2 hours late, cross and have found every possible fault. I know you always get some but it is disheartening, it’s lovely to read either happy comments or positive suggestions Thank you

Beautiful location, probably best on that part of the Yorkshire Coast for views above the village to the bay and Whitby helped of course by the amazing weather. We spent 3 lovely nights at the Porthole. Being frequent visitors to Sandsend it was the finest accommodation we have stayed at. The lounge and bedroom was superb with plenty of room. The kitchen and facilities whilst small was practical along with the provisions provided. Maybe a microwave would be a useful addition but clearly space is an issue. A great find and surprising we have never found it before.

Perfect for a couples retreat, Porthole B & B in Sandsend. It’s near Whitby (10 mins on bus) or a leisurely walk along the beach, yet well away from the hustle and bustle of it. It’s in a league of its own, quiet and quaint with an abundance of beautiful local walks around and fantastic eateries! Helen is the most excellent host, she has such a hidden gem of a place. Our second stay, still as breathtaking, sea view from waking up, sea view when showering, sea view when having your morning cuppa. The porthole is extremely comfortable and has everything you need, Helen provides a good breakfast of fresh bread, jams, eggs yoghurts and fruit! The pictures do not do justice, it’s really a must visit. I cannot praise this place enough, everyone should visit! For eating out, Fish cottage for takeaway is amazing lovely seating outside just wrap up warm. The Hart inn is a busy pub downstairs but a fantastic restaurant upstairs, please book ahead for this place, food does not disappoint, plenty of choice and cooked beautifully. There are two cafes along the beach, tides, serving pizza, ice cream and a few home bakes breakfast until 11am Our favourite was sandside cafe, serving full English breakfasts (all day for late risers) paninis, doorstop sandwiches. Scones, cakes, ect. Whitby is 10 mins on the bus just make sure you check if there’s any events on we accidentally turned up during goth weekend and it was unbearably busy, so we left and walked back to sandsend via the beach found a lovely cafe along the way serving the best hot chocolates! It’s a gorgeous walk. I would always pick staying here over Whitby, you will not be disappointed.

This is our third visit to the Porthole, and it is always a delight. Helen is accommodating and helpful. The cottage itself is in a great position with extensive views of the sea and, in the distance, Whitby. As there are no close neighbours, if you are wanting peace and quiet away from it all, this is the place for you. One thing to be taken into consideration is that the Porthole is half way up a fairly steep hill and there are a few steps to be climbed, but, apart from that, it is an ideal base to explore the North Yorkshire Coast.

We had a wonderful stay at the Porthole. The views are stunning, the location is ideal for walks and sightseeing, and the apartment is impeccably equipped and furnished. Helen is a fantastic host: she gave us privacy but was available when needed. We also really enjoyed the breakfast with home-made jams. We will be back!

It is the perfect hideaway with amazing views. Beautifully designed and thought out - a little gem! The kitchenette is particularly impressive - small but perfectly formed! Personal touches appreciated also - what a fruit bowl!

What a great location, beautiful views, fantastic sunrises and a lovely host! Having a cold end to a great day out on the bikes was also met with a heated floor in the bathroom and was a touch a bliss! A delightful breakfast and great recommendations for local spots to, walk to and places to eat, made our short break stress free and very comfortable!

Wonderful restful place with fantastic views. There's a view of the beach from every room even in the shower! Lots of great walks around starting from the cottage, including one up through the Mulgrave Estate to the old castle. We only went for two nights but was so rested that we felt we had had a weeks break.
