The building is elegant and the two dining rooms are quite small and intimate but comfortable. Once a guest is seated, the table is not rebooked so the meal is leisurely and not rushed.
The food is sublime. The menu is based on fish but there are other choices.
We were treated to a very pleasant amuse bouche of tropical smoothie.
I started with pan fried scallops which were perfectly cooked. My husband had crab spring rolls which he also loved. We both had the fish pie which is not a sloppy mess under potato! It is a stack of perfectly prepared crayfish, scallops and white fish in a lovely seafood sauce. We usually have the winter menu when this dish is served with vegetables but this time we were able to catch the season for samphire and peas. This was dressed with crystallised lemon which lifted it to heaven!
The desserts are a triumph. Homemade mini desserts and ice creams - servings about the size of an espresso cup - meant we could choose a variety between us. I chose creme brulee, toffee Eton Mess and a steamed sponge with home made strawberry jam. He chose chocolate flake ice cream in a brandy snap basket and trifle. All gorgeous as they always are.
The food and ambiance are delightful but the stars are the team. Lovely lovely people who really care about what they do and want to share their commitment with their guests.
We’ll be back yet again next year.
Yes - it is not a particularly cheap place to eat but you get what you pay for; we were more than happy to pay an appropriate price for the location, surroundings, service and amazing fresh fish. The breakfast was also excellent.
We spent some time speaking with David, the co-owner, and got to understand just what a labour of love this place has been over the last 18 years. We had amazing food and a fantastic stay...and are looking forward to our next visit.
The phone call with David to fix things up, the welcome when we arrived and the Allum room we had were just excellent curtain raisers for the main event. The food and staff were simply perfect. Best piece of fresh cod I’ve had and my wife’s signature dish fish pie (like no other) was stunning. The service was friendly, efficient and always available without being over done and the wine list ideally rounded everything off. This place is a true gem run by partners David (front of house) and Tim (chef patron) who really go that extra step to make everything work. We shall certainly get back soon and not wait again.
Rooms are of a very high standard, and breakfast will set you up for the day ahead.
If your looking for a special place to spoil someone, then this is the place.
The legendary Fish pie is to die for and desserts if you still have room are unbelievable.
3 courses and a decent wine from an excellent list all for around £120 for 2.
