Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at the Penrallt Hotel for our charity's Annual General Meeting. We stayed for 3 nights and when we first arrived we were immediately stuck with how friendly and helpful Angela and her team were. They couldn't have done more for us and we felt very welcome. This high quality service continued throughout our stay including a tea and cake reception for 80 or so people outside, which was executed superbly. The rooms in the Penrallt were wonderful, very comfortable, clean, and luxurious. We also very much enjoyed sitting in the opulent lounge on the comfortable sofas most evenings. Lastly, the view at the Penrallt is beautiful! Quite unbeatable. Especially in the mornings when you are eating your breakfast in the dining room and see the day break over the bay and cliffs. Thank you for an amazing stay!

The Penrallt Hotel is amazing. We stayed for a weekend recently to meet up with family members who had travelled there to join us for a catch up. It was a great choice as the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. The rooms are wonderful with beautiful views over the bay. We even had a balcony to sit on. We found it very relaxing and comfortable for all age groups. The bed was incredibly comfortable (I suffer from back trouble) so slept really well. The food and service were first class. Although we didn't get round to trying out treatments in the spa area we did feel pampered. The hotel stands in it's own grounds with plenty of room to stroll and take in the view. It is not too far from Cardigan or Fishguard where we saw the lovely painted houses in the lower part where Under Milk Wood was filmed. All in all we would gladly return for another break and highly recommend it.

Visited in a group and were extremely well looked after by the entire staff. The young team were a delight and went out of their way to assist. My room was in the garden and was well appointed and comfortable. I couldn’t have wanted for anything. Meals were lovely, especially breakfast where I had cockles and really felt I was somewhere different.

I so much wanted to like this place and give it a good review. I had read the write up and admired the courage and tenacity of Angela, the manager, investing in the place and making it work in such challenging times - and employing local people. The afternoon tea was advertised as 2-5 and I didn’t get a reply from my enquiry form (it had gone into junk mail at the hotel?). I phoned to chase up and the girl was helpful and polite and agreed to do the afternoon tea at 2pm although they didn’t normally serve until 3pm she said. Hopefully the website has been corrected now. I wanted to treat my mum, who is 82 next week, to a really special afternoon tea and I thought that it looked really special on the hotel website and I hoped that it would be made personally special because the website gave that impression. I am afraid I was bitterly disappointed. The conservatory was not very clean. Our tablecloth had not been ironed and was all crumpled and had a dirty black mark on it. We were given the afternoon tea and then no one came back to us at all. The teapot was dirty too. I had to go twice and find the girl for a refill of tea. The afternoon tea was barely adequate and absolutely nothing special and I felt so so let down. It had been meant to be special for my mum and it was one of the worst wastes of money I have ever made. My mum would have been scandalised if she knew how much it had cost me. Angela, if you are going to charge £25 a head for afternoon tea, then it needs to be really special. Nice crisp white tablecloths and napkins, clean windows to look through, clean crockery and freshly made cakes- and attentive service that makes you feel special. I wish I had had the courage to refuse to pay, but instead I cried on my mum and apologised for a really expensive and very sad birthday treat gone wrong.

A wonderful hotel with views of the sea. We stayed in a superior garden room, suitable for our dog too. Small enclosed garden was nice to sit in the evening with the dog. Room was comfortable, beautiful bathroom. Evening meal was lovely and breakfast had a wonderful choice of foods. Staff were friendly and helpful, Angela was great. We have stayed here before and will definitely stay again .

We stayed at the Penrallt Hotel this August with our family of four. The family room was one of the best we’ve stayed in! My husband visited the hotel often in the 80s/90s as a child and wanted to show it to our children (aged 7 and 10). The hotel itself was great. Very clean and comfortable. The rooms are decorated well and the mattresses comfortable. The children’s room was separate to our room so once we’d put them to bed we could still have a bit of an evening. My husband brought drinks up from the bar! We noticed that outside of the hotel, in the grounds, there is still work to do renovating the swimming pool and tennis court. And the lawn outside the dining area is ripe for a croquet lawn! All in good time. But if these were up and running we’d happily come for the weekend and barely leave. Before going to the hotel we had dinner in Aberporth and saw a pod of dolphins! We’ll be back!!

We spent 3 nights at this very attractive hotel last week. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left it was a lovely stay. The welcome was genuine, the staff couldn't have done more to help. The room was spacious , spotlessly clean and had everything we needed and the food, both dinner and breakfast delicious.

I’m not one to review often but felt the need to do so here! Throughout my career I’ve had the benefit of staying at some of the uk’s finest hotels from Grantley Hall to Grosvenor House and the majority of the old De Vere chains across the north. I’m merely mentioning these which are all well oiled machines having had years of success. My point here is that this Hotel is relatively NEW, the staff/team are made up of wonderful Local people and at the heart is the NEW manager who could not have done enough for myself and my family. The team is more like a family than a corporate entity and this comes across in their relaxed style. Hospitality is tough these days but I really feel they have it spot on. (Read the book in the pics) Breakfast was in a word Stunning and we also had a fantastic evening meal with the children. Nothing was too much trouble at anytime. I’ve never been anywhere where I’ve personally got to meet the chef, housekeeping and the management. The hotel is Original in so many ways, Edwardian and tastefully presented. The grounds are safe for the children to run round and it’s positioned on the hill with the most breathtaking view of the bay and the local town. We will certainly be returning! This area really is a little Gem, the local beaches are incredible! MWNT is a must! So much to do as a family within 10 minutes drive.

We’d stayed a few years ago and we were excited to return, especially for the fantastic views. While there has been some attempts to modernise this place is a real wolf in sheep’s clothing and certainly not “luxury” that the owners delusionaly believe. We could not work out the balance between their arrogance and rudeness when we raised issues with the poor food. The furnishings in our room must have been matched by a visually impaired designer. It was just poor. Our culinary experience was average and no better than a Toby Carvery dinner and a Wetherspoons breakfast. One upside though for those celebrity spotters is the husband of the ownership couple is a doppelgänger for Arnold Rimmer from Red Dwarf😆

Response from Tom Bailey, Owner at Penrallt Hotel
Responded 22 Jul 2023
Thank you for your review, although we are obviously disappointed that the comfort and style were not to your taste. It would be very useful to understand when you stayed last as “the husband of the couple” has been working away since last September, so it’s highly unlikely you would have seen him. Maybe you are basing your poor review on a highly edited, dumbed down, light entertainment programme on television and not an actual experience of our beautiful hotel and very friendly and competent staff.

Booked an evening meal at this establishment to celebrate my birthday. The owner and me were in email contact regarding the booking to the extent that she asked me about any allergies which my guest and I may have and she asked for a telephone number which she could contact me. My wife and I arrived at the hotel in time for a drink in the bar before dinner only to be told that there was no record of my booking. The owner then went on to inform us that the chef had been stood down at about 5pm as he was feeling unwell. This I can understand as hygiene is paramount when dealing with food and possible infection which could spiral out of control. I am not happy, however, that I wasn’t informed, prior to our arrival at the establishment, of the situation so that we could have altered our evening accordingly. To be fair we were offered a bottle of wine by the owner, which we accepted, but will definitely think twice about revisiting the Penrallt.

Response from Angela Smith, Owner at Penrallt Hotel
Responded 2 Jul 2023
Thank you for your review. As I explained, the chef was poorly within an hour of you arriving and I gave you a £22 bottle of wine which you seemed to be gleaming with and understood. May I ask kindly, why the need to report this as 1 star when your words were “ we completely understand” and thanked me profusely for the free bottle of wine? Had I done nothing to apologise, I would have accused a 3 star, but in the economic climate we are in, I wish you nothing other than well.
