The Royal at Dockray hotel garners positive feedback for its cozy and snug rooms, complete with comforting amenities like tea and coffee, though a few guests suggest the rooms could be more spacious. The establishment's atmosphere is frequently described as warm and inviting, contributing to the overall satisfaction of many visitors. Guests applaud the hotel for its cleanliness, especially the well-maintained, sizable bathrooms. Adding to its appeal is the prime location, which is celebrated for scenic walks and proximity to Ullswater, enhancing the hotel's value proposition. The on-site amenities, including a range of dining options catering to various dietary needs, are a hit among travelers. Praise is also consistently directed at the Royal Hotel's staff, who are recognized for their exceptional service, making guests feel welcome and attended to with professionalism. Despite an isolated complaint about being overcharged, the consensus is that the hotel offers good value for its standards and location.

I homesit/dog sit in Matterdale End about 4 times a year and, after a long walk, I like to pop into The Royal on the way back 'home'. This is my first visit this year (for obvs reasons). The ground floor has been refurbished during lockdown and is lovely. The bar is enclosed in perspex screening and the tables are appropriately distanced. I called in twice and both times was served by Monica who is lovely and chatty (but not overly so). My first visit, I had the homemade soup with delicious seedy bread and proper butter. Another customer was raving about the fish and chips so that sealed the deal for my second visit. It was well worth the visit.
The food at The Royal is homemade.
The food was great. The service was great. I'm back again next month and I will definitely be calling for lunch again after a yomp around the beautiful surrounding area.
Hope you all manage to grab a lovely Xmas, Monica and staff. See you in the New Year 🚶‍♀️🐕🏘️🥣🍛🍻🎄

Booked this hotel as a last minute getaway. Stayed in standard double room which was very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a lovely evening meal in the restaurant after a hard day of walking. The price of the room included a very tasty full English breakfast . The hotel is very dog friendly so if you want a great location at a good price would recommend a stay here .

Myself, husband and dog stopped by as it was lunch time, on our way to Ullswater and Aire Force waterfalls. Fancied and in need of a bit of a light bite.

The gentleman behind the bar was very friendly and accommodating, DOG FRIENDLY PUB. If you don't like dogs you can sit in the other side with the tablecloths, if you so feel the need. But we enjoyed the company of 5 other dogs and their owners.

We ordered the Cunbrian Cheese on Toast, which my husband throughly enjoyed and raved about the chutney. I ordered the curry chicken mayo on white and it was a big portion with a lovely side salad and mustard dressing.

Nice atmosphere and the radio or music station was cracking!

The meal we ordered was quite expensive so we were expecting decent food! My pheasant was tough and dry and disgusting.
Our breakfast in the morning was awful, the food is of poor quality and our cutlery was dirty and some even used. Side plates dirty also. He sausages were full of water.
Most of all the service was just strange. The staff were not friendly, quite awkward in fact. We had our plates removed before we had even finished. No one asked how our food was or anything, No one said hello or had any manners at all. One man actually was kind and said he would put our tab on the room and hat we could pay in the morning. But apart from that, he customer service was awful and not friendly or pleasant. just really awkward.
Location of he hotel was good though.
Oh I forgot one more thing, cobwebs in the breakfast room right near our table!

We spotted the royal on our way to aira force. After a 7k walk with two children, we were ready for some calm.
As we walked in the server at the till barely acknowledged us. She didn’t give us any instruction on where we could sit or how to order.
We had to ask if we could sit anywhere and didn’t get much of response on how we should order or if we got a menu.
Found a table which was free sat down. The pub seemed quiet for a Sunday, but there was a que piling at the bar. Nothing I would have described unmanageable for three servers.
My partner went to order our cakes and tea. We ordered two scones, carrot cake and pavlova.
Unfortunately the scones were running low, the girl on the till said she would check in the back if they had any more.
She took our order anyway and we patiently waited.
First the pavlova came out, which was fit to serve 4 people. This was for our youngest and we wish would have known how big the serving was going to be before hand or that it would have been enough to share.
As an after thought we were given one set of cutlery. We asked the boy who was serving us when the carrot cake was coming and did they have any scones. He hadn’t a clue what what we were talking about but did promptly rectify.
He brought us a slice of carrot cake out and told us there were no more scones. I think the girl at the till had forgot all about asking for our scones or offering us to order something else.
Whilst we sat and waited for the kids to eat their cakes we observed the chaos at the bar. The girl at the till seemed totally flustered and the other servers almost guessing at who had ordered what.
It Seemed surprising for a well establish pub in a popular spot to be so flustered when there really wasn’t that many customers, nothing different to what I would expect at most places on a Sunday afterNoon in the Lake District.
We settled the bill which was £19.50. 2 tea, carrot cake, pavlova (whopping £7), mars bar cake and 3 soda waters. Apart from the pavlova, where would have maybe encouraged our little one to order one of the other slices of cake, We think that was fair and the cakes were lovely.
My last point which Took me by surprise was the WiFi. £4 for an hour usage. Can’t remember the last time, if ever I saw an establishment charging for Wi-Fi? Especially in the lakes, where there will be so many holiday makers working out their next stop. No 3G or 4G signal so you would have been forced to pay fo you really needed it.

We chose The Royal Hotel for an overnight stop enroute to Scotland. On the few occasions we make this trip, we usually look for branded hotels with parking , pet friendly and serving breakfast. We came across the Royal online. It’s traditional, cosy with additional benefit of being pet friendly , parking and freshly cooked food. Well, we were not disappointed in any category! It’s a small privately owned hotel where walkers would frequent , not somewhere you need to dress for dinner. But believe me, the warmth of the welcome, cleanliness and quality of food makes up for all the modern aspects of a branded hotel. The surrounding area is quiet with countryside views. The beds are comfy, water hot and towels soft. Yes, it’s about a 20 minute drive from M6
but it’s so worthwhile and the price including breakfast is amazing.

As nice as the food and the staff were at the hotel, the place itself is in a bad state of repair and in need of a bit of renovation.
It’s an old building and therefore I appreciate these things happen but the roof was leaking throughout the building.
The towel rail in my room fell straight off the wall as soon as I hung a hand towel on it. I informed reception of it and they did sort it for us, but it was a big heavy metal rail that fell from a height with next to no weight on it, so it was a little dangerous.
The rooms are extremely basic and small and we did notice they were pretty dusty with a lot of cobwebs hanging from the roof.
The carpark is also small and tight to get out of.
Some form of alarm kept going off in the morning at 7am, not sure if it was when a certain door was being opened but it was disturbing us and the rooms themselves are not very good at drowning outside noise, we could hear other rooms returning later on causing further disturbances.
I would say that I think the staff and food were nice, but the place itself needs some work and for what we received was overpriced at £106.50 per night.

We spent four nights here having chosen this hotel to be away from the busy centres. The staff were all very friendly and helpful but we were surprised that only one was wearing a mask when serving food.
The food was excellent, particularly the breakfasts which were very well presented. The pancakes were delicious!
Given the current situation with Covid we did not expect to find cushions and bed throws still in use but they had not been removed from the room. We also found a lot of dust on the furniture so were doubtful about how thorough the cleaning had been, although we did find that the bathroom was very clean.People crowding near the bar and the door also caused some concern. The feeling was that rules were not being strictly enforced so this made us a little apprehensive.
Having said all this it is a place I would happily return to, but probably only when the Covid risk is not so great.

Me, my husband and two dogs had an absolutely FANTASTIC weekend break at this awesome hotel. The location is stunning, step out of the hotel front door and you can head to the fells. It really is a hikers paradise. We enjoyed two days of fantastic hiking even in the pouring rain the views were magnificent. The hotel is lovely inside with traditional mixed with modern aspects. The room was perfect and extremely clean with all the facilities you'd expect. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was spot on. All members of staff were very friendly, welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. I can not fault our stay at all and can honestly say this is my favourite hotel. So looking forward to visiting again soon. Many thanks to all the staff.

We booked a table for 8 for dinner - 4 adults and 4 children. We were asked to order in advance and glad we did, customers who were ordering as we arrived were advised of a 45 minute wait for food. We ordered mains only all of which were OK but nothing to write home about, however the price didn't reflect either portion size or quality.
The one member of staff we interacted with was pleasent enough.

I recently stayed at the Royal and there were two visitors who had three dogs between them. The dogs were allowed in the bar area and were obviously kept in the guest rooms.
