Dalhousie Castle Hotel and Aqueous Spa is a magnificent 13th century fortress set within acres of wooded parkland on the picturesque banks of the River Esk. From the moment you arrive at Dalhousie Castle a warm Scottish welcome awaits. Whether relaxing in the the Spa, gathering in the library next to the open fire, dining in the vaulted 2 Rosette winning dungeon restaurant, or retiring to your chambers, you will always feel as welcome as the 'Laird'. Brimming with over 700 years of history, Dalhousie Castle is the kind of place that could have been plucked from the pages of a fairy-tale. But make no mistake, this ancient castle with its complex arrangement of turrets and towers is very much the real McCoy. Once the seat of the Ramsay Clan, the castle boasts an illustrious guest list that includes King Edward I, Sir Walter Scott, Oliver Cromwell and Queen Victoria. Today the castle’s long tradition of hospitality continues and you can still be assured a royal welcome and the highest standards of food and service at this fine four-star hotel. Please note that despite our best efforts it is has not been possible to install a lift in the castle. Instead we invite you to start discovering the castle from the moment you arrive, taking in every nook and cranny and peeking behind unlocked doors and to satisfy your curiosity on the way to your bedchamber.

At nearly £300 for a night in a tiny room with one chair so one sat on the bed and one on a chair the room was like budget accommodation. The venison was super as was the smoked trout starter. They were the only two good things. Overcharged on our bill. They took off the overcharge but not the 10% service charge which is on everything. We live half an hour a way and were looking forward to this as my parents went the week before and loved it. They must have been in a different hotel! They were upgraded for free whilst we were in a tiny room. No way worth the money. We will not be back nor will we recommend.

We got an amazing deal in the Black Friday sale and everything about our stay was perfect! The castle itself is beautiful, the room was lovely and comfortable and the dungeon dining experience was fantastic! Great food, great staff, great place!

I rarely write reviews but having read some previous reviews , I wanted to put the record straight. My wife and I have just returned from a very enjoyable overnight stay. The hotel has great history which adds to the experience , yes , some of the furnishings need updated ( The General Manager said the new owner is looking to invest ) but the hotel maintains its charm , the library is a fabulous room you would expect in an old Scottish castle . All our interactions with staff were good , friendly and attentive , eating in the dungeon was fun , the meal was excellent . I have to say having stayed at many top end hotels in Scotland , DBB is not expensive and is good value.

We stayed at Dalhousie Castle for a couple of nights and really enjoyed it. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Our superior room was comfortable, spotless and very quiet. We ate in the hotel both nights and the service and food, including breakfast both mornings, was excellent. Definitely recommend it for a short break

The grounds are beautiful but that’s where the beauty ends! All areas of the hotel are tired and run down. Booked 2 superior rooms for 2 nights as attending a wedding. Both beds uncomfortable and felt like the bed would fall apart! The door to the balcony didn’t fit and there was a huge draught in the room at all times. Service in the bar was painful, waiting 20 minutes for 3 drinks (we were the only people ordering). No atmosphere and at times felt like you were interrupting by asking for a drink. Food was overpriced and awful. Most of the wedding party ended up with dodgy stomachs! The spa was disappointing, the sauna was out of order and jacuzzi wasn’t worth the bother. Shower area smelled of mould and bad drains. Breakfast was mediocre at best but staff at breakfast very attentive. Very disappointing experience and the wedding itself could have been better organised to prevent everyone hanging around for hours! The falconry was amazing and I will review separately. If booking a special event/celebration do your research to avoid disappointment!!

We had our elopement wedding here. The staff did a great job helping us along the way through the planning, which was a little hard as we are from the US, but we were overall very happy with how it all went. They we also very helpful in suggesting vendors for flowers, Humanist, etc. The package was a great price. We were in the William Wallace Suite, which is all the way at the top of the castle, with french doors to a private balcony. We loved our room, even though there is no elevator up there, and there were a LOT of stairs. We just considered it a leg workout. The staff was so accommodating in bringing things up to our suite, even we we tried to save them the pain of the stairs. The suite was in good condition, and we loved the old furniture. Our only criticisms of the suite for improvement would be: 1, the mattress could do with being replaced. It was feeling lumpy, but overall, it still wasn't the worst one we had on the rest of our trip. 2. For as big as the suite and bathroom are, a deeper and larger tub would have been amazing. I tried to relax in a bath the night before our wedding, and it was just shallow and disappointing, I felt like it was more for bathing children. 3. Better in room coffee option. The food was excellent in both restaurants. Their full Scottish breakfast was my favorite meal of our entire 2 week trip. I dream of returning for that breakfast. Both restaurants, including our server Sophie, did an excellent job of marking things for us that were/could be made gluten and dairy free for us. Sophie, who ended up being our waitress for more meals there was lovely and did an excellent job tending to us. Our dinner in the Dungeon restaurant for the night of our wedding was also really good, and an interesting atmosphere. Some other reviews mentioned a smell down there, and we never noticed anything other than food smell. We had a couples spa day the day after our wedding. This was a lovely time, and our treatments were lovely. The only thing that was a little weird was that they did our pedicures with us laying on the massage tables, and from like little buckets, which we thought was odd, but also was an uncomfortable position to be in. Overall, we left feeling taken care of, and relaxed. We thought the overall condition of the castle was very good. There's always room for improvement anywhere, but for such an old building, I was impressed (and I work in construction and notice EVERYTHING) some people have left reviews complaining, but I think that they need to have some more realistic expectations. Things in hotels get used, and it's impossible to be able to replace or repair everything the instant it shows wear. People were complaining about hearing through walls, and again, it's a VERY old castle, and things were not able to be soundproofed like they are now, but even in new hotels I've stayed in, you still will always hear doors closing and people in halls. Have realistic expectations people. The scenery was gorgeous. The castle was beautiful. The staff was helpful, more than hardworking, and very polite and friendly to us. We literally have no real complaints, and cannot wait to go back there and celebrate a future anniversary. Staying at Dalhousie will forever be a lovely memory for us. Thank you to all the staff at Dalhousie who made our wedding and stay such a happy memory.

A castle with no luxury left. This castle used to be a school for boys and it shows - this place is just beat down. Everything is worn (furniture literally ripped at the seams) and a real hodgepodge of cheap furnishings (nothing matches). Beds are not comfortable. Walls are so thin you hear into the hallway and other rooms. Restaurant has a foul smell (maybe over-indexing on the “dungeon” theme). We were going to make spa reservations but based on other reviews we’ll avoid that and go elsewhere. It feels like a hostel and not a hotel. Overall this property requires significant investment to demand hotel prices like it does.

Stayed two nights here with my sister. We had a wonderful time. This is a truly magical place. Our room was old, worn and a in need of an upgrade but still magnificent. It was cean and comfortable and full or character. Lunchtime was wonderful in the Orangery and we were very well looked after by the lovely Kim and the staff. Vegeatarian food was good here but dinner menu could be a bit more varied and adventurous. The setting for dinner in the old stables is absolutely stunning!!! The spa is small and drafty and could do with an upgrade. We had a facial and massage - both excellent and lovely staff. Christmas decorations were nice but this amazing castle was crying out for garlands and holiday embellishments everywhere! Anyway we will be back.

I gave my sister a voucher for 2 nights dinner b/b with a spa treatment. We went together and had a reaaly lovely time. Everyone on the staff was friendly, efficient and helpful. The room was great. Plenty of space and very clean. The food was fab and the dining room was very atmospheric. The Orangery was super. Very sunny with lovely views. Service was superb. I have to mention the bar staff and Kiera(n?) In particular who made lovely cocktails. If you want the archery or falconry, book in advance as it's a separate business. Also- be aware that there are a lot of stairs.

Really disappointed with our stay, has really gone downhill since we visited last December. The main issue was the lack of training the majority of the staff seemed to have been given and there didn’t appear to be anyone with much of a clue as to what they were doing. Service in the bar with a very uncomfortable atmosphere was very slow and when asking for a specific wine on the menu we were faced with a confused expression. The “spa” was very messy, tired and a few of the facilities were out of service. Real shame as Dalhousie is a beautiful place, we got married there in 2008 so have fond memories but unfortunately we won’t be returning.
