I am sad to have to write this review as our night away from all the covid madness had such potential however, after a few too many issues I feel I need to. We arrived at the gorgeous location and checked into our room, although a bit dated it was nice. On a trip to the toilet during the night we were shocked and surprised to find a bat flying erratically around our bathroom. After what we thought could be the worst part of the night we found that:- •The phone in our room didn’t work which didn’t help as we had no phone service. •Two very scared women braved the run out of the room only to discover the hotel was in darkness and that there was nobody awake at reception to assist us •Our door lock was very difficult and loud to open (Rattray room) so near impossible to be quiet for other guests in the hotel at 3am •The communal toilet in the hall next to our room was out of order •We no longer had hand washing facilities (which in this day is essential to keep us safe). On our return to the room we shut ourselves in our bedroom and had a not so enjoyable sleepless night which we did feed back. Although the member of staff that assisted us the next morning was very friendly and very helpful at catching the bat for us (found in one of our jacket hoods!!) he did tell us that this happens often and that it’s to be expected with an old building. We felt we couldn’t shower or use the towels in the room after being told to wash the jacket so spent the day unclean and without a coat in the rain! The bat situation was horrible but these things do unfortunately happen, however the actions after this caused us the most distress and we do worry that if there was a more serious issue we wouldn’t have had any assistance. Breakfast was lovely and staff very friendly…
Stayed for dinner, B&B November 2020. Very scenic drive up from Perth through Blairgowrie, about 30 miles. It's well sign-posted when you get near Glen Shee and has a lengthy single-track access road. I believe it has two AA rosettes, both of which are thoroughly deserved. The three-course a la carte meal was outstanding. The wine list very much features the pricier end of the market but we had the NZ Pinot Gris and the Jacobo rioja and both were superb. Full Scottish Breakfast, also cooked to perfection. I didn't take my golf clubs but the 9-hole course is close by - looks more like a pitch-and-putt to be honest - you could chuck a putter, a 7-iron and a few balls in the boot and I'm sure that would be all you needed. I hesitate to say anything against it, but 'be aware' that the free wifi doesn't carry well through the old baronial walls. We couldn't really get any usable stable access in our room. Other rooms may be better. The gravity shower had a meagre flow, but at least the water was hot. If the plumbing allowed, I really can't see why the management wouldn't fit electric showers, given the popularity with hill walkers. If these aren't deal-breakers for you (and why should you bother about wifi in a rural paradise) then I recommend this for a weekend getaway, especially for foodies and wine lovers.…
Stayed for two nights during the COVID restrictions that prevented enjoying a glass of wine with our dinner. Despite visiting during these strange times the hotel greeted us with a great hug of Scottish hospitality. Our room Winton was lovely, great views from every window including the little window by the loo in bathroom. I do love to visit places with character and history sloping floors creaky stairs and draughty nooks. This hotel I have to say is super cosy no draughts here. The grounds are lovely for walking, Glen Taitneach on the doorstep we had a super walk. Enjoyed dinner in the restaurant first night, second night we had a casual cosy bar meal by the fire. Staff really lovely, helpful happy to help in every way. Lots to explore nearby. Wildlife abundant saw eagles, hares on our walk. Will definitely visit again. Had the most peaceful nights sleep and breakfast is absolutely amazing.…
On two night visit, first night thought we were in foodie heaven, all three courses were delicious, beautifully laid out, a picture on a plate .On second night ordered same again (pork belly) as it was so good previously. Huge disappointment, overcooked, not laid out neatly and missing glaze. Dry and tough, whereas it was tender and succulent before. Room missing a dressing table with mirror, so wife could not sit down to do her makeup etc. Room name Rattray.
The hotel is an absolutely gorgeous old baronial country lodge, warm welcoming and cosy. The DBB rate for our stay, including wine was extremely reasonable and would recommend you select this option. Room: We were lucky to receive and upgrade to one of their turret rooms (as this was our mini honeymoon!). The room was large, comfortable and charming (and clean!) the views were simply breath-taking. The only negative, and the main reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5, is that the bathroom does not have a functional shower, it is just a short shower attached to the bath meaning one has to hang their head over the bath to wash their hair. I think this is quite problematic. Food: The food was superb and beautifully presented, the excellent price for DBB allowed us to splash out on some excellent wines (from their very nice list). Breakfast as well was a delight, the produce was fantastic in their cooked breakfast, their pastries were a delight and the homemade muesli delicious! The service was warm and welcoming, however the co-ordination between staff is lacking, as well as their attention to detail. Considering the calibre of food and wine on offer, needs to be improved to provide a more seamless service. i.e ensuring all tables are booked in properly, making sure appropriate cutlery is on the tables, serving the wine properly etc with a bit more training my review would move from 4 to 5 stars for the service! All in all it is a wonderful DBB location, I would definitely recommend a stay here, it is ideal for golfers and walkers alike (make sure you remember your boots!) I will most certainly be back and should the amendments detailed above be taken in to consideration this would become a true 5 star experience at an extremely competitive price!…
