We spent two nights at the Green Lodge and feel that we need to add a review, given that the ones were quite misleading. Yes, the location is good, given the hotel is right next to the elephant camp. You can sit in restaurant and see elephants walking by in the morning. On the other hand, it’s the hotel furthest away from the village center (about 15 minutes on foot). Yes, restaurant area is nice and in the evening, there’s a nice atmosphere, with the locals playing guitars. Yes, breakfast (eggs and coffee/tea) included in room price (which was around 11 E), and it was good. Yes, staff , especially young woman, unfortunately can't remember her name, and young man, Peru, very helpful. Beer price reasonable, 40.000 idr, I think. No wifi, but that was ok. However. Dinner mediocre. The young man who runs the place seems not to care – we asked him repeatedly about arranging a return drive to Medan and first he quoted a horrendous price and then, seeing we were not interested suggested a lower price – but then never informed us about departure time, despite repeated phone calls. We ultimately booked a drive through the Tourist Office in the center. The biggest issue: Rooms. We had a room that was part of a duplex, with semi-view of the review. The room is not just basic or rough (no A/C, a small fan that barely works, no warm water, no furniture). That would be ok, given that you’re in the middle of the jungle. The room is dirty. It seems never to have been cleaned or fumigated. It seems never to have been renovated. Mosquito net was dirty. Add to that that wooden floor (which looked as if it had never been swept) and wooden walls also have cracks and cockroaches come in and out. Bathroom without flush toilet or sink, just a large bucket below a faucet that fills with water when you wash hands - and to flush you use a pail. Nowhere to place toilet paper (you will have to ask to be given some) or hang towel (you will have to ask to be given some). One side is partially open, with a broad wire that does not reach top. Different insects came flying in and out. You may say that for that price, one cannot expect luxury. That is true. However, cleanliness is not luxury.…
When you arrive in Tangkahan at the visitor’s center, they will tell you to go left, cross the suspension bridge and you will find the "nice hotels" - don't do it! We almost fell for it and wouldn't have had an amazing time at the green loge! We turned right and walked for quite some time, until we reached the lodge. I chose this lodge, because it’s the closest you can get to the elephants. But the location has more to offer than just that! It’s the most northern lodge in Tangkahan and the location is very quiet and beautiful. The river flows through kind of a canyon up there and it’s just marvelous. We didn’t have a reservation, but since it was low season (rain season was about to start) we were the only guests. While the girls hurried to prepare a room for us, Bernando (the owner) kept us company and we had a nice chat. I asked him about possible activities and he explained the several walking tours the lodge offered and the elephant activities that one can participate in. We booked a jungle trek with tubing for the next day and “walking with the elephants” for the day after that. Before dinner we got our room and while the view from the terrace was gorgeous, I do have to admit that the room itself was a little rough. Don’t expect any comfort! But since comfort wasn’t what we came for, that was fine for us. After that, we had dinner at the lodge’s own little “restaurant”. The food was always good, and they had a lot to choose from. Some locals also came for dinner and they invited us to drink and chat with them, we felt so welcome! One of the guys, Bob, was also our guide for the next day. He was so lovely, the jungle trek was only half a day, but he did a great job and explaining all the plants and animals to us. We went into a cave full of bats and he even found two big pythons to show us. The trek ended at the river, where other locals from the lodge had prepared a lovely little shrine with lunch for us. Bob gave us all the time we wanted to swim, enjoy the hot spring and just relax, before we took the tube back to the lodge. Afterwards he invited us to his garden, where we had coffee and enjoyed the view over the river. By our second evening, it already felt like staying with friends, not like a hotel. The next day we went to the river for the elephant washing and Bob was there to make sure we were always first in line and he also took incredible pictures of us. After the washing, we went on a walk with the elephants. PLEASE DON’T RIDE ON THE ELEPHANTS. The people of Tangkahan depend on the elephants as a source of income and while they try their best to give them the best care and offer elephant friendly activities, elephant rides are still the most profitable. They are currently building a big veterinary clinic for the elephants and want to shift to a more elephant friendly program, but the transition isn’t easy. So please, choose the walk instead of the ride, you won’t be disappointed. It is so beautiful to watch these amazing creatures in their natural environment and how they behave naturally. There are also guides who explain a lot about elephants and their habits, so it’s a very educative activity as well! After that we just enjoyed our time with the locals. We went swimming together and spent the night exchanging lessons of English/Indonesian. We spent 5 more weeks in Indonesia but this was one of my favorite places to stay, especially because of the people!…
Green Lodge hotel is the best place and strategic location on behalf of washing Elephant and forest tracking. The Staff very nice, friendly and helpful. Even the style of room was very old but it was nice to have experience and feel nature living
We stayed here as part of our package, it was definitely a dismal choice. No reflection on Tangkahan, which is a nice area and the elephant washing is not to be missed. The green lodge, though, has no hospitality. None. The man who showed us our room, gave us the key and only spoke once, to say the electricity would be on soon for a short time. It came on for less than 5 minutes and that was it. No toiletries of any kind, there was not even toilet paper and none to be had. Luckily I found a store where I could buy tissues to use. The food, what limited choices happen to be available, is of poor quality. Even the soft drink I had was of dubious taste. The only 2 reasons to be here are the elephants and the cool bridge you take to cross over the river. This lodge could be so much more, instead, it is so not worth a stay.…
Very friendly staff, amazing view at the river/jungle, food is very good! Basic facilities are present but do not expect luxury in tangkahan. But that is exactly what makes it beautiful and charming! Located right next to the elephant rescue centre which means you can enjoy your breakfast while the elephants are also eating.
