If you are looking to retreat, relax and rewind, a stay with us might be just what you need. Stay for a couple of nights, a couple of weeks or a couple of months. Work remotely while we look after you with a soulful yogic morning routine and delicious vegan meals each day. We are a boutique retreat centre in a medieval village in the South of France. We have a walled garden with a meditation labyrinth, a glorious yoga shala, and our half board vegan food is sensational and free from sugar and wheat. Much of it is raw. The house is hip, stylish and bohemian, yet it feels like a temple. The rooms are uncluttered, vast and individually styled.

MERCI for such an exploration and experience. I'm so grateful to have done it. Missing the early swims, the rituals, the Shala, the Walks, the delicious meals, my huge bathroom...!!! and the Noble Silence,.. already. I left with a sense of peace and enlightenment, and the wish to discover further my inner space. Love from Berlin, Hélène

10 days within the magic of Yobaba Lounge and the beautiful Pyrenean mountains made a great, soft, homely, embracing frame for my retreat holiday. The energy is based on a beautiful feminine welcoming atmosphere with a heart-opening vegan food experience... you feel the love that Gertrud adds in her kitchen. If you get up early to join the morning ritual of swimming in the mountain lake - followed by the yoga practice in the 3rd-floor yoga room, you can be lucky to experience Sunrise - 3 times! All in silence and beauty. This place contains love and good energy. My best recommendations.

I can't recommend this place enough. I was anxious and stressed, very close to a burnout and going to Yobaba Lounge Retreat made me feel in control again. Big thank to Gertrud and her team for the support, for teaching their yoga methodology which recovered me, and of course for the amazing vegan food! The house is beautiful located in a magical small medieval city, surrounded by nature and ancient culture.

I took my mother on this yoga retreat as a gift for her 65th birthday and it was worth every penny and every flight to get there! Gurtrud runs this retreat. She is an inspiring, creative, kind and wonderful human being. Just being in her presence relaxes your soul. There truly is a unique and special energy at Yobaba Lounge that I've never experienced anywhere else. The 5 day, 4 night retreat we attended included "noble silence" from 20:30-14:30 the following day, ever day. And it may sound scary but it was transformational. Being alone with your thoughts and not having to make chit-chat with other people was surprisingly freeing. The yoga is in the top floor of the old house (main part built in the 1600's) where often windows are open you can hear the pleasant coo and gentle flapping of pigeons. Yoga for us was mostly light Hatha and restorative which for myself and my mother was just perfect. The nightly guided meditation after dinner by Gurtrud was sublime. She has this way of speaking and guiding you that relaxes you to the core. My mother was so moved that she actually cried a couple of times. The vegan menu was simply stellar. Everything cooked by Gurtrud is surprising, creative and delectable. In addition to being all vegan, she didn't use any soy, or processed sugar. How she got meals like "raw pad-Thai", "Duck wraps" and "Goulash" to taste how she did is simply astounding! She needs to write a cook-book (actually I think you can get some of her recipes online somewhere). The house itself is gorgeous. it's been lovingly restored room, by room. Apparently a lot of the rooms aren't even in use since the house is SO old and restoration is slow. But it lends a peaceful and remote feeling to it all. The house is not uptight or too precious or pretentious. It feels homey and warm and you can use any of the rooms available in most of the downstairs to read, relax and reflect. And the courtyard is stunning, complete with outdoor cats relaxing in the sunlight with you. I would recommend this (or any) of the retreats Yobabba and Gurtrud offer. It's a special place and I will most certainly go back!

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write this extensive and informative review. And thank you for your very kind words. It was a special pleasure to have you and your mum, after all the complexities and pandemic delays to our journey together. Ultimately, the timing was perhaps just perfect. I am sending you both lots of love. It was beautiful to meet you both.

The owner Gertrud transformed this ancient French Manoir in a place that allowed me to get away from everyday life fast and find wisdom that help me to follow my path. Gertrud is a warm and attentive host and the food she prepares is gourmet quality vegan food. The house is a little worn around the edges (the owners words), so If you plan on staying at the Yobaba Lounge be prepared for something extraordinary that cannot be compared to a stay at a hotel or luxury spa but will bring you transformative insights if you are open to it.

Gertrud's place is a true haven, I cannot recommend it enough. The house is beautiful and spacious, with each room having been designed to welcome you. If you're a fan of art, collectables or vintage crockery - you will get lost for hours mapping the house's treasures. The food is phenomenal, I loved sharing Gertrud's passion for food and hearing the love and attention she poured into each bite. Yobaba lounge is guest-centred, and I felt well and truly at home here. You are invited to participate as you like, noble silence and yoga were offered on the retreat, which was wonderful to experience. My bedroom was spacious, and I had my own bathroom which was made up of quirks and little pieces of design/decoration, showing how much love has gone into the house renovation. The bed was comfortable, and the fire was lit all day, which was a delight to cuddle up to during the evening with a cup of Hibiscus tea. The garden is an oasis, with so many spots to nestle into and enjoy the fresh air. Getting out and about, Chalabre and the Aude region was a new adventure in itself. It seems the region is one of France's best kept secrets. Upon Gertrud's recommendation, I visited the lake (nearby walk - great to swim!), the fairy forest (I think it's called Nebias?), Mire Poix, Rennes, Quillan and Espéraza. Treasure trove markets, castles, and walks to enlighten any soul, not to mention the warmth of the local people. This place is a sanctuary and I would encourage anyone to visit. Thank you for your warmth and hospitality Gertrud, I'll certainly be back!

Yobaba lounge is nothing like the reviews or the photographs. It's in a partly derelict town with dismal streets. It's dark and both the room and bathroom were minute, freezing and had unfinished bare plaster. The food is high carb, cheap, stodge. The shala has both old and new woodworm in the rafters, which are low so making it impossible for some people to raise their arms. And I haven't mentioned the 'wildlife'. I can't load any photos as TripAdvisor says they are too big. You would hardly believe they are of the same place.

Thank you for your feedback. It is a great shame that you did not talk with us when you where here and give us the opportunity to explore how we could make you feel better during your stay here as part of a private yoga group. Most people experience the undeveloped nature of this unspoilt medieval town as one of the attractions. Chalabre is a village with conservation status, being a Bastide from the 13th century, much of it original and not renovated. We have had so much positive feedback not only about the rooms, the space here, but also in particular about the food. It is anything but cheap stodge. The meal-plan your group leader chose was actually a very balanced and healthy plant-based diet, beautifully presented, made with fresh ingredients, mindfulness and with a high content of plant protein. All photos of the food are representative. We do have a range of different sized rooms, ranging from very large (50 sqm) to standard sized (10 sqm). The style of decoration is hip and funky, your room (10sqm) was newly decorated, and the old plaster wall is a feature. I appreciate however that everyone has their own taste and clearly this was not to your liking. If you wanted a larger room, you could have discussed with us an upgrade to a larger room. The photos on this site, and on our website, are representative of what you can expect. Consistent feedback is that house and food are better than the photos. The house is grand, old and a little worn around the edges, but it is clean, bright and spacious. Ceiling height in the rooms is 3m. The yoga shala has a ceiling height of just under 2.5m between the rafters. Whilst that is relatively low, the ambiance, large windows, ancient textures, beams and character of the space make up for it. In 7 years of hosting yoga retreats, no-one, including men nearly 2m tall, have felt that the low ceiling was a compromise too far. If any reader is considering a stay with us, and feels concerned by this review, we encourage you to contact us for more specific information.
