Detailed Reviews

Stayed here after a very long days cycling. Malcom our host could not have been any more accommodating and genuinely big hearted. We needed food and couldn’t get a taxi into the local Indian So he suggested a delivery and even though he’d shut the kitchen and bar for the day he let us eat inside at a table when he’d already cleaned up and set for breakfast and made sure we had enough beers to keep us happy. The rooms were really comfy and the full English breakfast next morning sent us off with enough energy for the days cycle. Would happily come back and buy Malcolm a beer.

I stayed in this hotel for one evening and had a great stay. Everything was as described, the staff were welcoming, informative and very helpful.
The room was really nice and I particularly enjoyed the deep bath after a long drive down from Scotland.
I had access to the bar for dinner as well and had a lovely meal.
The continental breakfast in the morning was very generous with cereal, bread for toast, yoghurts, breakfast bars, fruit, tea, coffee, fresh orange and much more available.
Would definitely stay again if in the area and recommend to others.

A very good stay.
Room great as always, and immaculately cleaned and serviced by Liz.
Beer and wine good, and food choice and quality spot on. Friday pie night a really good idea, and the sausage and mash and Sunday lunches really good. Well run by the new management team led by Chris - very friendly and really helpful.
We have stopped here quite a lot over the years and were a little concerned about the change to the breakfast arrangements, whereby there is now a self service continental breakfast rather than the traditional cooked breakfast, but this worked quite well, and provided more flexibility regarding breakfast times.
Will be back later in the year.

On arrival place was very clean 10/10 to the cleaner! Very comfy bed and a lovely bath. Nice lined curtains. Bar food was over priced for frozen chips and pie priced at £15! Pie was local and OK but only veg on the very limited menu was mushy peas. Nothing is free it's all paid for in the room price. Breakfast was a let down. Cheap morrisons bread, no fresh Pastries or muffins. 1 banana in bowl few apples and pears. Even with a so called free continental breakfast more effort could be made.

Hi Claire, Thanks for leaving us your review and i am sorry you were disappointed with your stay. We try to serve good food on our menu however, in regards the chips it is not effective to make and cook 'homecooked' chips and i am unaware of any other pub locally to us that does this. In regards the breakfasts I have taken on board your comments and have already made some changes to the breakfast offerings we serve. Best Regards Chris

We have used the Trooper before, when having works done on our house, and we have put up the workmen in the Trooper, knowing they could get themselves a good dinner and have a hearty breakfast after a good nights sleep. This was before covid when Hassan owned it.
The same workers are back with us now, so naturally we booked them in the Trooper. This morning I was shocked when they told me that the bar and restaurant was closed. So they had to drive around looking for somewhere to eat last night, not easy when you’re in the middle of nowhere and don’t know the local area and even worse there was no breakfast for them this morning. So I am now cooking them breakfast before they start work. Looking at the website it says the bar and restaurant doesn’t open until Wednesday lunchtime, so I guess I will be providing dinner and breakfast for them tonight and tomorrow. At no time when booking the rooms were we told there would be no breakfast and no bar/restaurant open to get an evening meal. It is pretty poor to offer B&B and only provide the bed!!!!!
Very disappointed and will not be using the Trooper again!!!!

Hi Jules, perhaps you would be so kind as to contact me directly on 01730 827293 to discuss your booking. I can not identify your workmen on my booking system. Every confirmation email does state our bar and restaurant opening times. I am sorry if you missed this information. Hopefully speak soon. Regards Malcolm

First and last time to the Trooper Inn. They did manage to get us a last minute table for Sunday lunch which was the best I can say. Service for the whole pub seemed to be with one person and as a resuly was not only very slow but also not very welcoming. The food then proceeded to take ages and was not good when it arrived (cold and uninspiring with caulifower cheese left off as they had run out but of course we were not made aware of this!)

Good Morning, I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your lunch experience with us when you visited on Sunday. We were extremely busy this week and we did manage to accommodate you with a table at the last minute as you say. I am surprised that you have said the food was cold and uninspiring, we had no other complaints regarding this on Sunday. Had I been made aware I would have asked the kitchen to rectify this straight away for you. I am sure that you can appreciate that with any restaurant when it gets busy and we take last minute bookings the food can sometimes take slightly longer to come out than normal. We are not a fast food chain and therefore everything is cooked to order and delivered in a timely manner to offer the best tasting dining experience that we can give to our customers. I am sorry if you were not happy and like I have mentioned if this had been brought to my attention then I could have rectified this for you as quickly as possible. We did unfortunately run out of cauliflower cheese but this should have been made aware to you for which I can only apologise. There were three members of staff on shift in the bar on Sunday so not sure why you felt everything was being done by one person. Best Regards Chris Skinner Landlord

Usually closed on a Monday, The Trooper Inn made the right decision to open on a Bank Holiday Monday!
I was passing and saw that they were open. Plenty of parking available. Cheerful welcome as I entered, I was served with a smile. Ample choice on the menu, I was easily able to find and order a hearty lunch and sat with my drink at a sunny window table. My delicious lunch was served promptly.
A steady stream of passing trade came in after me and as I left more were arriving.
I would definitely visit again next time I’m passing the area.

Stopped off for food whilst walking. Warm, friendly welcome. Enjoyed roasts and the curry. Cosy fireplace too. We got there for around 1245, were thankful they could cater for us, as they only are only open 12-3 Sundays.
Lovely pub, will be back!

Positive. Room was a reasonable price. Unfortunately it only had a bath. I asked for a room with a shower but I was not allowed to change. This room was booked through my business apparently that was the reason I could not change.
I had food and this was very average. The squid was obviously from a packet, battered and deep fried. The squid was rubbery. The stroganoff was apparently made that evening unfortunately it didn’t taste like any stroganoff I’d ever tasted. The hoe made sticky toffee pudding was not good at all.
I had some wine. That was good and the staff/owner was a pleasant bar man.
The bar seemed inviting.
My room apart from the bath was good although the coffee machine should have instructions.
Unfortunately I would not stay here again unless there were many changes.
