The George Inn is located in Devon's smallest town, Hatherleigh. The inn is famous for its welcoming, homely atmosphere, and in addition to its wide drink selection, it provides great, freshly cooked food served by our friendly staff. Soft modern furnishings complement the traditional and historic building features, creating a warm, inviting feel. The Inn has traditional values offered with style, charisma, and personality. Our menu is a mix of great pub classics and modern English dishes, with sharing plates for informal dining and a great range of mains. We take pride in sourcing our produce locally where possible. We are proud of the quality food we offer. We have 12 delightful ensuite rooms, some of which have four-poster beds and feature baths. One of our rooms is fully accessible for people with disabilities. We look forward to greeting you at The George and will make every effort to make your stay comfortable enjoyable and memorable. Spent a week night here as part of a 5 day trip.
The hardest part of the whole experience was trying to find the rear parking - the lady at the bar who gave my wife 'directions' frankly didn't have a clue. We circled 3 times trying to figure it out.
Possibly the same one when we turned up in the bar with 4 bags looked at us like we were going to have a beer and some crisps. A gentle nudge we had a room booked and we were in business.
The rooms are on the second floor, accessed only by a key-locked door so is secure enough. There is a flight of stairs with a central landing so access with large suitcases is OK. There is a central courtyard so the rooms are all around the outside of the pub with a few up and down steps and carpet so it can be hard to push your suitcase.
The room was very large, much bigger than any hotel room. The bathroom similarly is large and plenty of room, but not much vanity space to place personal items. The shower had the typical stains on the tiles that all motel rooms seem to have.
The bed was good size and comfortable.
We didn't really hear any external noise, and nothing form inside the pub so sleep was great.
We didn't have dinner there but di have the included breakfast. It's a very basic offering, and not a large serve but was plenty fine. Along with the hot options the expected cereals and juices were on offer int he dining room.

All in all a pleasant stay and nothing to really complain about except maybe some staff customer skills.

On arrival,we received a lovely warm welcome and were shown to our bedroom. We both starred at each other as the room was absolutely beautiful and extremely well presented.
After enjoying a bath in our room, we met up with our friends , the large bar was busy with banter and were quickly served again being made very welcome.
After a couple of drinks and enjoying the bar ambience we were asked were we all ready to go to our table.
We were told that It was “Friday Night Steak Night “again aghast with the choice and the helpfulness of the staff.
A perfect meal was totally enjoyed by ALL !!!
Being a Friday evening a local band the Dockneys were playing, this made for a truly amazing and memorable night.
All six of our party thoroughly enjoyed their evening and would like to take this opportunity to say a huge ThAnKyOu to Gabe and all his team.
They all achieve perfection on many levels …welcoming, cleanliness, service and keeping “The George” firmly a true favourite.
Very best wishes.
Mark and Tracy

Stayed two nights for a wedding in a nearby village. It’s a really olde worlde place, it burnt down a few years ago but you’d never know it as it has been restored so beautifully, the gallery and the downstairs courtyard are particular features. We took three rooms, all fine, one downstairs adapted for accessibility, alarm pull cords, big bathroom with grab rails, shower seat if needed etc. If the car park is full it’s right next door to a large pay and display, £2.20 all day, free 6pm-9am. Had one evening meal which was fine, it’s good wholesome pub grub and a good choice at breakfast. Plenty of hand sanitiser around and at that time masks still required in public areas. The landlord/landlady were both very welcoming and friendly as were all the staff we came across.

On the face of it, the property was generally finished to a high standard and the staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. I was initially pleasantly surprised by the appearance of the room i was given. However, room 11 is not fit for purpose. The room suffers from noise from quite loud kitchen fans, both motor noise and whining bearing noise. These fans are on all the time the kitchen is in use, beginning before 7am. When the fans eventually switched off, there was more penetrating low frequency buzzing noise that continued all night. This made it very difficult to sleep resulting in an unpleasant nights stay. Room 11 was described as being an economy room, but it was not obvious at the time of booking or in the subsequent confirmation why this was so. It could be as a result of room size, amenities, or slightly worse/tired decoration. Over the week I was travelling, it certainly was not the cheapest room by some way, but it definitely was the worst night I had. In my view, a room that is noisy is not fit for purpose. The issue was raised with the evening staff and although they attempted to find a solution, there was no satisfactory outcome. A follow up complaint email to hotel management received an unsympathetic response.

My wife and I selected the George Inn as a base as we celebrated our wedding anniversary. Hotel looked great on the website and the bedroom was excellent. Walk-in shower (should be mandatory in all hotels), plumbing that worked and a mirror with a heater to prevent condensation spoiling the view.
And then the restaurant - oh dear! The staff were young, friendly, eager to help but untrained. They did not know what beers were available, which dishes were not available and no effort had been made to refill the simple ceramic salt cellar.
Typical conversation with customers at a nearby table: "What is the soup the day?"
"I will go and find out." "What is the pie of the day?" .
"I will go and find out."
On our second breakfast the dishes were delivered as ordered, but there had been a delay whilst the waitress completed a phone call. Two pats of butter had been placed on top of the toast and I guess the plate had been left under an IR lamp to keep warm.
No surprise that the butter was molten and it was so funny that I did not have the strength to complain.
Hatherleigh is in Devon - as was the fictional "Fawlty Towers". The George Inn suffers from the same mismanagement. Must be something to do with the geography.

We booked for three nights in July 2023.
The good bits:
The rooms are comfortable, clean and had a good wet room style shower/bath room.
The bar/ restaurant staff were excellent, hard working, friendly and helpful.
The beer was excellent.
Excellent breakfast.
Interesting building and history.
A reasonably good area for North and South Devon and trips into Cornwall.
Not so good bits:
A Fawlty Towers style restaurant (not the waiting staffs fault).
No table numbers so meals being delivered to the wrong tables (then taken away a couple of minutes later into the kitchen, seconds later back out to the correct table!)
Be prepared for a wait for your food.
Important. One guest was a Coeliac (requires gluten free diet). The chef was asked what food was available and the guest was informed that the chips were gluten free. The chips were ordered with the meal and on the second day, again the staff were informed that the guest was gluten free and the chips were ordered again. On the third evenings meal the young lady waitress informed us that she had been informed that the chips were cooked in oil that was used for foods containing gluten, therefore not gluten free. The potential health issues for allergic customers are obvious when they do not get the correct information from the kitchen.
The gluten free menu is very restricted.
The carpark could be cleaned up and parking places could be defined as some people did not park considerably.
There are stairs from the carpark to the rear of the hotel. There is also a lift which has not been used in a long time and has flower pots in front of it making it difficult for people with mobility issues to enter from the rear.
A lot of really bad loud swearing in the bar. I’m not a prude and maybe I was in the bar at the wrong time

Beautiful hotel, completely rebuilt after a fire. It is a copy of the original that was several centuries old.
Clean rooms, very quiet hotel and town.
Good breakfast, although adding fruits would be an excellent idea.
I paid around 75 pounds for a room for two, with a double bed with breakfast included (end of April 2024) A very good price, if it weren't for the bed being very narrow, I couldn't sleep well, with the risk of turning over and falling to the ground.

We went with my wife and a friend who was visiting England to have coffee and hot chocolate.
We ordered 2 hot chocolates and a black coffee. The 2 "hot" chocolates were lukewarm and barely had any colour or flavour. The coffee was "umbrella water"!!! , brownish, tasteless water. The employee told us that the coffee was out. He had no courtesy or shame in selling us that horrible coffee. He immediately left with his backpack on his back because his shift ended. Evidently he didn't want to put more coffee in the machine so as not to waste time, in addition to giving us two hot chocolates that were almost cold and almost without chocolate. I'm not from Hatherleigh but I'm from a nearby town (North Tawton) and I've decided to never go to this Pub Inn again. That their employees are not professionals and sell hot drinks that are almost cold and poorly prepared (three poorly prepared hot drinks!!!). I will never visit them again. I'm sorry, I've never been served something of such poor quality anywhere.

Just had the most amazing Sunday lunch at The George Inn.
The meat platter was plentiful for four and the selection of vegetables were fab! Pigs in blankets were a bonus!!
Nothing too much trouble for the staff.
Great family sharing experience 😁

My Partner and I were at a loss for what to do for New Years Eve and we came across this Gem of a place.
We arrived at 3pm on New Years Eve and we were checked in straight away and taken to our room. As it was New Years Eve we were advised breakfast was later than usual, between 10am and 11am. This was music to my ears 😂
The room was large and airy with great facilities. Water, hot chocolate, tea, coffee and biscuits. The bathroom was large with a double bath and the towel were lovely and fluffy.
The room and bathroom were exceptionally clean.
We had a wonderful night, the bar had a great atmosphere and a brilliant band were playing.
Breakfast was also lovely offering a variety of things from continental to cooked breakfast.
It was one of our best New Years we’ve had.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who plans on visiting the area.
