The George Inn is located in Devon's smallest town, Hatherleigh. The inn is famous for its welcoming, homely atmosphere, and in addition to its wide drink selection, it provides great, freshly cooked food served by our friendly staff. Soft modern furnishings complement the traditional and historic building features, creating a warm, inviting feel. The Inn has traditional values offered with style, charisma, and personality. Our menu is a mix of great pub classics and modern English dishes, with sharing plates for informal dining and a great range of mains. We take pride in sourcing our produce locally where possible. We are proud of the quality food we offer. We have 12 delightful ensuite rooms, some of which have four-poster beds and feature baths. One of our rooms is fully accessible for people with disabilities. We look forward to greeting you at The George and will make every effort to make your stay comfortable enjoyable and memorable. Gabriel & Josh

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I loved my two nights staying at the George. I had a different room the second night. The rooms were both large and modern, and best of all quiet. I was invited out for dinner, so can't comment on the food in the pub below, but I would love to stay there again sometime if I'm ever in the area again. The staff were very friendly and nice.

Had another amazing meal here at the George. Food was really top notch and great value for money. Billy our waitress made the experience even more enjoyable as she was super efficient and friendly. Highly recommend the George.

I remember The George from before it burnt down. Then, it was a fantastic place to stay and eat. I stayed there recently hoping for the same. Very disappointed to find the kitchen being run by young inexperienced people. Obviously no chef and no desire to employ an experienced hospitality person to check table service. The rooms are lovely but the food is dreadful. Table service is left to teenagers to work out. Not impressed and sadly won’t be going back. A shame because the building deserves so much better.

We booked for three nights in July 2023. The good bits: The rooms are comfortable, clean and had a good wet room style shower/bath room. The bar/ restaurant staff were excellent, hard working, friendly and helpful. The beer was excellent. Excellent breakfast. Interesting building and history. A reasonably good area for North and South Devon and trips into Cornwall. Not so good bits: A Fawlty Towers style restaurant (not the waiting staffs fault). No table numbers so meals being delivered to the wrong tables (then taken away a couple of minutes later into the kitchen, seconds later back out to the correct table!) Be prepared for a wait for your food. Important. One guest was a Coeliac (requires gluten free diet). The chef was asked what food was available and the guest was informed that the chips were gluten free. The chips were ordered with the meal and on the second day, again the staff were informed that the guest was gluten free and the chips were ordered again. On the third evenings meal the young lady waitress informed us that she had been informed that the chips were cooked in oil that was used for foods containing gluten, therefore not gluten free. The potential health issues for allergic customers are obvious when they do not get the correct information from the kitchen. The gluten free menu is very restricted. The carpark could be cleaned up and parking places could be defined as some people did not park considerably. There are stairs from the carpark to the rear of the hotel. There is also a lift which has not been used in a long time and has flower pots in front of it making it difficult for people with mobility issues to enter from the rear. A lot of really bad loud swearing in the bar. I’m not a prude and maybe I was in the bar at the wrong time

I booked a meal for fathers day and upon arrival find out that they aren't serving Sunday roast and that they've been serving a summer menu for a couple of weeks. Wouldn't have taken 5 seconds to let me know that when I booked the table, if I had known that I would have booked somewhere else. Ordered scampi off the summer menu as it was too late to go anywhere else by that point and when it arrived I queried that it had come with peas as I was pretty certain it said salad garnish on the menu. Asked the server and he came back with salad dressing. So I explained again and he went to the kitchen and came back saying him and the chef didn't think it came with salad. So I asked to see the menu, he bought one back and as I'd thought, it did say salad garnish not peas, so he went back to the kitchen and brought back a salad. No apology or anything. This really shouldn't have been as much hassle as it was. I'm not going to blame the young lad who served us as this isn't the first time I've been served by young staff at the George who have no idea what they're doing. The food was fine, but unfortunately quality and service is very inconsistent at the George.

We have just returned from a wonderful three-night weekend stay at the George Inn Hatherleigh. I stayed with my husband and two of our grown-up children (in two rooms). Our sons had a super twin first-floor room at the rear of the property, spacious with an ensuite. Our first-floor room was exceptional, with a four-poster bed, a roll-top bath in the bedroom and an ensuite. The room was fabulous, and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. All the staff were excellent-really nice and super helpful and upgraded our room with no additional charge...Thank you! The food was fabulous (we had dinner there twice). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the stay and the food. The cooked breakfasts were excellent too. We had a full English breakfast twice and eggs benedict once. Both were excellent. We hope to stay here again!

We stayed at the George Inn whilst cycling the Devon C2C, and what a great choice it was! We were made to feel extremely welcome and the whole team went out of their way to ensure that we were well looked after. The breakfast was excellent and just what we needed before another day of cycling. I slept in room seven and it was very good. It was clean and comfortable. Our bikes were stored securely. I would highly recommend staying at the George Inn.
