Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ate there two nights food delicious. Was piping hot and very plentiful. Really loved the pigs in blankets and the fish pie. Staff were very friendly and efficient, even though the place was pretty busy.

We stopped here for 1 night on a recent visit to the North York Moors. It is a great location to explore the moors from and has a free car park. The rooms are spacious, clean and well appointed. Although it is in the middle of town it is very quiet. The staff are friendly and professional. We ate in the restaurant and the food is excellent and their is a good menu to choose from.

Used this pub/restaurant during our stay in Kirkbymoorside and can't recommend enough. All staff we met were great ,in particular Ali who couldn't have been more accommodating friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back to this area and revisiting the hotel for food.

Stayed for one night with friends, dropped my bags into our room (number 1) immediately noticed the musty smell but hey ho thought it might just need airing a bit. Didn’t spend more than 2 minutes in the room before heading back to the main building to meet friends Had a beautiful meal and evening in the bar itself and absolutely no complaints about the food/service. Then… after a night out in Kirkby we retired for the night… at this point we should have just got a taxi back home no matter the cost, I seriously regretted having a drink at this point as I just wanted to leave. The smell was disgusting, I opened all the windows I could (bearing in mind it’s Dec!) and jumped into bed… the smell seemed worse where our beds were. I jumped out of bed and pulled the bed away from the wall - it was disgusting… mould and dirt covered the wall, carpet, back of the bedside table and skirting board. I messaged the manager but realised at 1.15 in the morning the chance of a reply was slim… nothing. I pulled the bed across the room as far as I could, jumped in and buried myself under the duvet - I managed maybe 4 hours sleep maximum. The following morning I asked to speak to the manager (it was her day off) so one of the staff said “can I help I’m housekeeping… “ As we walked into the room she remarked it’s no good telling me about smell I have no sense of smell (clearly!) I showed her behind the bed to which she replied we pull the beds out - hmm not on this occasion… or the last…or the last… I told her I was not happy and requested a refund. Later in the day the manager messaged me to say I should have told them the previous evening if I wasn’t happy with the room… had I spent any length of time in the room earlier I certainly would have! I received my refund reluctantly on the grounds that my father was critical in hospital with Aspergilllus and Pseudomonas both caused by mould spores. Had I been the manager I would have taken a look at that room and thought I will willingly give you a refund for the disgusting condition it was in… shameful

Up in the area as running with my dog at nearby Dalby forest. Good sized room for us and the two dogs. Food including dinner and breakfast was brilliant and lovely staff. Even opened up half an hour early so we could get breakfast before running. Would recommend and will be going back in 2023.

The G&D has a lovely Bar and a great Restaurant… usually. One of the Chef’s is fantastic! The staff are mainly nice and helpful. The main problem is the bizarre pricing structure, such as Guinness is £5.60 per pint! That is an astonishing price! Over the road at the convivial White Swan the Guinness is £4.10 per pint, which is still expensive. How can a pint of Guinness vary by £1.50 per pint over a 70 metre distance in this little, non-touristy town? It makes no sense!

Nice comfy room and great food! Recommend the balmoral chicken and the smoked haddock and salmon gratan that my wife liked so much she had 2 nights. Friendly staff and the location is great for exploring the Vale of picking being exactly half way between pickering and Helmsley. Good walking straight from location.
