This place is wonderful. My husband treated me for my birthday and it was wonderful from the minute we walked through the door. The woman who greated us (sorry I have forgotten your name but I think it was Meg... please accept my apologies if I am wrong) was warm, friendly and cheerful. The room was lovely and the food was amazing. The owners were wonderful and welcoming too. It was a wonderful, comfortable nights sleep... and I don't usually sleep well in hotels... the bed was lovely. The staff went above and beyond to make this a wonderful night away for me and my husband

My wife and I made a last-minute booking for dining on a Saturday evening. On arrival, it wasn't busy but we were then told to pick a table that wasn't set for us to dine at. So we did. It afforded us a prime position from which to witness some of the worst customer services I've ever seen in hospitality handed out to hotel guests checking in. My starter arrived VERY quickly and in my view, that's not a good sign. It was OK. Frankly, £8 for some deep-fried prawns needs to be better than OK. My main was the fish & chips. Yes, fish and chip in a pub is not going to be the same as from a fish & chips restaurant. However, I expect it to be blooming nice for almost £16. It was not. It was far from it. It was edible. The triple cooked chips may well have been, but how long they had been cooked for was questionable - they were like a science experiment gone wrong. Usually, I'd complain to the manager, but I could decide who that was as the two women behind the bar acting with authority seemed out of their depth. One of them was so terrible with customers I decided that, on balance, paying up and putting this one down to experience was a good choice on this occassion.

The room was clean but lacked items that you may expect in 4 star hotel . Tissues, and a glass to drink from. The breakfast buffet was very limited, poor quality cereals x2 on offer, tinned grapefruit with few segments swimming in juice., and a few small pots of yogurt. After reading welcome book in the room, the item re. special diet requirements said, to ask on placing order in restaurant. I asked for gluten free bread, on which the managers reaction shocked my party and myself. She was very rude and said Oh WE DONT Do That, i explained about the book entry, and she just walked away without an apology, and the waiting staff looked on in dismay. Probably needs some customer service training. Also to finish the hospitality tray inside our room, again no choice no decaff, poor quality milk product.

The menu at the George and Dragon is varied and imaginative using local ingredients to good effect. The local scallops on black pudding were expertly cooked. The trio of Lamb was tasty and huge and the steak and stilton pie was unusual and rich. There was a bit of a shortage of wine and the Chilian merlot was a bit one dimensional. Overall a very good evening with attentive service.
