The Kings Head is situated at the top of the Market Place in Kirkbymoorside. There is a private car park (go through the adjacent public car park and keep going round to the left and you’ll find it) and if that is full there is generally plenty of street parking available. Check in was welcoming and friendly.

Our room (number 8) was spacious and clean, albeit “spacious” doesn’t include the very small gap between the bed and the wall, so whoever sleeps on that side needs to be a bit nimble! The bed itself was very comfortable and the pillows, sheets etc felt crisp and fresh. The en-suite was fine, although the shower had a tendency to change temperature on a regular basis.

Overall, it has to be said that the furniture and decor are certainly overdue a refurb, and the rotten window frame doesn’t add to the ambience (tip - you can use the wooden tea condiments box to keep it open, as it will eventually crash down otherwise).

For now however, I would describe the room as adequate; and having said that, I am well aware that Marston’s are particularly slow and reluctant to refurbish their properties, so I fully accept that the current management and staff are doing very well with what they’ve got.

Breakfast was very good and, after a nice, fresh fruit salad, we both enjoyed a top class “Full English” that was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented.

The bottom line is that this is a nice pub with lovely staff. As a Hotel it has a way to go and whereas I describe our room as acceptable, is it a £100 a night room? Not really. If I was to give a rating based on the furnishings, decor etc. it would be distinctly average. Such nice service and that excellent breakfast however certainly merit a higher rating.

Stayed for our anniversary. The room was clean but very dated and in dire need of modernising, we nearly didn't stay! The inside of the pub didn't reflect the room standard so decided to give it a chance. Staff were friendly and after speaking to the very approachable owner, he assured us he is working on modernising the rooms. Food was lovely which made up for the first impression.

This was a last minute change of plan by our small group of 2 couples due to changes in restrictions in Northumberland where we were originally travelling. As others have alluded, this hotel is somewhat eccentric in its design and decor but, most importantly, owners and staff members could not do enough to help. Everyone had a smile on their face and nothing was too much trouble.

We stayed for 4 nights and ate in the restaurant on 3 of them; the food was fresh and service was brisk and very friendly. Breakfasts were well prepared and of very good quality.

A special mention to owners Matthew and Emily, barmen Tom, Pete and John and all staff members whose names I did not note. The entire team was a credit.

We were told our room was a double, however a small bed with 1 towel, 1 cup for drink, 1 sample of shower gel in a tiny attic room shows it’s a single!!
The room was shabby and needs a full refit/decoration.
A sink 2 meters from the bed that constantly drips water, wall heater that doesn’t work, light above sink doesn’t work, kettle has to put on the floor to boil as no plug socket high enough, handle comes off wardrobe when you open it, chip board painted wall paper top to bottom - even the window ledge! A toilet and electric shower in a sliding door cupboard with no window - towel rail stuck to the wall with putty, wood chip paper coming from walls due to no ventilation.
How they can charge £80 for a room in this state is astonishing!
Breakfast wasn’t the best , 3 dogs in one small dining room, had to follow other guests to get juice / cereal as we weren’t told they were there, cooked breakfast was ok but the sausage was a strange flavour and the toast stone cold .
Fair to say we couldn’t recommend to stay here

Response from Emily Berry, Owner at The Kings Head Hotel

Hi there, I would just like to clarify, the points of complaint have been adressed in the smallest room in our Hotel. I would also like to point out that you did not book our Hotel in your origonal booking but we had a phone call from our neighbouring Hotel who asked if we had any rooms available as they had mistakenly double booked your room, we decided that we could offer you our small single room as it was the only room we had left that day, to save you a long car journey home that evening we let you have our room that is only ment for one person. I'm sorry that you had such an uncomfortable stay for a couple we would not ordinairly put up in our single room. Many thanks for your feedback.

Stayed here on Thursday night with my wife, as a base for a trip to Flamingo Land.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but this really is a hidden gem. The town it's situated in is really quiet. The hotel itself (at least when we stayed) wasn't rowdy in the slightest. Even if it was, the walls of the rooms are incredibly thick, so would probably block most sounds. The building is a very charming, with some really nice old features. While it could be updated a little, I'm not sure it would suit the vibe of the place.
The staff were excellent, very responsive and friendly. The service and food at breakfast was also excellent; fresh, not microwaved junk. We feel we had a great value stay and will be using the Kings Head again in future.
Anyone rating this place below a 4 at minimum is surely being excessively picky for the money, there's nothing I'd really change. We had a great time. Meeting the hotel cat was a bonus!

We stayed in the bungalow at the back of the pub.
It was reasonably priced by what we have found to be an expensive area for accommodation & food ( Yorkshire in general)
Anyway we booked for 2 nights .
The bungalow , their description not mine, was quite spacious . Bedroom, open plan kitchen lounge area .
Shower & toilet .
In need of redecoration, particularly the bathroom.
There was a massive tv , bit too big for the room.
The sofa bed was so uncomfortable, we decided to stay in ,have a take away & watch tv the second evening ,sofa so uncomfortable I ended up getting out the spare bedding and sat on the floor .
When mentioned when we came to leave I was told ‘ oh yes it is uncomfortable, I think the bar is actually broken !’ Luckily we didn’t need to use as a bed!
It’s not the sofa in the pictures.
The little kitchenette is not that well equipped with cutlery but the restaurant area in pub was close by.
The whole pub looked a bit grubby and need of an update .
Getting rid of the horrible carpet would be a start.
Breakfast was ok . My eggs were over cooked and toast burnt.
Just had cereal next day
My husband said his was fine.
Choice fruit , cereals etc.
The menu for evening meals looked good but I just didn’t fancy eating there .
Staff quite friendly.
Would go back if it was updated & cleaner.

Me and hubby booked a room here with our 2 dogs, the place is very old and has many original features including a twisty staircase with narrow stairs, low door frames, sash windows and in the sitting area at the bottom of the stairs an original stone fireplace with wood burner it was really lovely and comfortable. I would certainly recommend to everyone, breakfast was delicious, and we had a meal on one of the nights i had scampi, chips and salad absolutely delicious, my husband had fish, chips and mushy peas which he said was delicious. We had such a lovely stay abd it was interesting to see a leaflet of the history of the place in a welcome pack in the room which was very clean and tidy.

welcome greeting on arrival & shown to our fairly spacious room. No additional information in the room about wifi access etc. Only found the TV remote upon checking the floor under the bed upon departure. Quaint building leaves for unusual spaces and large gap under the door meant that a lot of light entering the room & some noise from the pub below in the rooms.
Pleasant meal in the pub one evening, staff friendly and attentive.
Overall, stay was alright, just feel the overall experience could be more polished and refined.

We checked in and all seemed fine with the room, had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Unfortunately the cold tap in the ensuite didn't work, and clearly hadn't for some time. Reported to reception and they delivered a bottle of water to tide us over to the next day when they assured us the tap would be fixed. No one came in the room the next day and the tap was not fixed. I have a feeling that this was the norm. So if you are booked here and when you arrive you are in Room No 5 please check your tap first.

We apologise that the tap wasn’t working when you checked in and that the simple short term solution was affective until the next day. When I myself went into the room and fixed the tap in a matter of minutes. I didn’t see you personally afterwards to inform you it was fixed but it’s been in use all week since your visit and no further issues have been reported.

Omg the most amazing supportive staff experience we’ve ever had at any establishment!!!

These guys went above and beyond. Me and my partner after coming back from the local lovely White Swan pub weren’t sure how to get back in the hotel other than through the from door (which was locked since it was past operational front-desk hours). So
we managed to ask the lovely lady who
was working at the pub - who happened to know the hotel manager, to be in touch with them to find out how to get back in. Turns out all we needed to do was use the back entrance. Though as a testament to how attentive they are, within 15 mins, the manger had driven himself to the hotel (bear in mind this was around midnight) and had come to make sure we had managed to get into our rooms!

Thank you again so much for your hospitality and for the delicious breakfast the following morning!

Really good value and really amazing level
of hospitality. Couldn’t recommend this place enough!

As regards the dog, check with the Hotel. There were people with dogs sat in the beer-garden but I don't know if they were staying there. Yes there are plenty of walks to cater for all.
