The garden marquee and drinks outside evening were lovely places to finish the day. We were spoilt with table service and the fun edge that Tony and his staff brought to the 2-day stay 11-13 July.
Breakfast was good quality, although £4 extra for a kipper was high, but worth it.
Parking and layout was really good, we had a nice room-6, although the loo could wake the dead, so after 9:00pm flushing is not recommended. Rear facing room was great, no noise. Nothing was too much trouble for Tony and Sallys team. Bless them they helped make some lovely Hovingham memories.
Slightly restricted menu, nicely prepared fish starter, no problem for requesting a small portion, both chose roast beef, yorkshire pud and, vegetables all cooked to perfection. Again, restricted sweet menu but rergret, our small appetites could only admire. A "wee titbit" with our well brewed coffee, would have been icing on the cake.
Dined in the bar, must sample the dining room next time !
Whist this is a hotel with much character..going back from memory on their brochure to the 1600's..it is well maintained, but don't expect a Travelodge experience, this is for the more discerning and relaxed traveler, who wants to return to a more civilised period!
Breakfasts..'Worsley', full English a must and evening dining is also a pleasure with a varied menu and great value for freshly cooked local produce.
Staff are efficient and pleasant..lovely garden and covered area, when the weather fine.
On the positive side the food was excellent. There were four of us staying and there was not a single complaint or issue with any of the food.
The parking was fine and free.
The hotel itself was clean and tidy although in my opinion it could do with redecorating.
We did have an issue though with the cleanliness of one of the rooms. There was quite a large accumulation of dust: on the wardrobe, the tables and the telephone. The bathroom was not clean to hotel standards and one of the toilet basins was not at all clean around the rim.
This was mentioned to Sally who most surprisingly tried to defend it saying that it had been cleaned (when it obviously had not for some time). Even the cleaner tried to pacify and said it was because the toilet was old. It was cleaned and all of the 'old marks disappeared. Sally was sadly not very accommodating. We felt awkward mentioning problems to her. Tony though was professional.
We had a problem with the water temperature which was tepid at best. Tony did try to resolve it but to no avail. Our room window did not open (room 3) so we lacked fresh air. One of the bedside cabinets did not open. Not a massive problem but when you stay in a 'superior room you expect stuff to work.
The bar/serving staff were very pleasant, particularly Josh.
Overall we would definitely eat there again. As for staying though they would need to repair some of the window frames which are flaking away quite badly and clean the rooms a bit better.
In the days of the blink once and its gone bistro pub and that feeling they only wanted my money The Worsley offers a wonderful warm traditional venue and with outstanding stylish locally sourced modern cuisine.
The host Tony is a class act, warm, dry , witty and an experienced wine expert but without the ridiculous wine charges.
Yorkshire at its finest. Enjoy it.
I still don’t do Yorkshire though.
The Lancastrian Missionary !!
High ceilings, broad staircases, and corridors. Plenty of parking around the back. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the roadside.
The internet worked slowly in the bathroom, not at all in the bedroom. Your teenagers may start a revolution! Telephone and data signal strength in the village is hardly their fault. Bring your book. Strong Wifi downstairs around reception, breakfast, and sitting room for planning your day.
Clean and recently decorated, I liked the soft bed. Plug sockets? I've got a 2 metre phone charger cable.
The bar serves draught beer in great condition - the cellar man knows what he's doing. This is not a cocktail bar; wine list is adequate and appropriate.
A pair of you might exhaust the dinner menu in a couple of days, and the breakfast is exactly what you'd expect - good. They have 'real' kippers, not the factory stuff, if that's your thing.
Financially, I've no idea how it keeps going, but that's not my problem … nor yours. A three star hotel at three star prices, no need to get sniffy about it looking a bit 'vin ordinaire'. This is a farming community in North Yorkshire, not Mayfair.
We enjoyed staying here. I think it's the kindness that suffused the place.
Warm, dry, with access to food and water, it's great from a survival point of view.
One big extra plus is the quality of the food. The chef is extremely good and will knock you up whatever you fancy if you want something different.
Tony, the manager I think, is very knowledgeable and helpful. The staff can not do enough for you.
You’ve got to try it. We are very picky on where we stay and we will be back here.
I read the reviews, as you do, and noticed the excellent reviews outweighed the terrible ones and am happy to say I'm so glad we booked here.
We arrived too early for check in so decided to have a spot of lunch and a drink in the bar and found the staff friendly.
On check in we were asked if we had visited before and when we said no we were shown where the restaurant etc were before being taken to our room. We were even asked if we needed help taking our luggage up to our room.
We were in the four poster bedroom and found it to be clean and warm.
The bed was very comfortable and I slept well (I am only 5ft 3ins and my hubby found it funny watching me climbing onto the bed the first time as it is quite high).
The food is gorgeous and there is a good choice of wine, Tony (the owner) is the man to speak to if you want advice on which one to choose.
The hotel has an olde charm about it, welcoming, friendly and homely. If you fancy spending some time just sitting and reading, having a coffee or a drink from the bar it's lovely to just take a seat in the lounge area, in front of a lovely fire and relax.
There are some great walks within walking distance from the hotel or a short drive away. Helmsley, Pickering, Malton, York and Castle Howard are just a few places you can visit in the area.
We got chatting with a few people who have been coming to this hotel for years and they only have good things to say about the hotel, food and Tony, Sally and their wonderful team.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and have already rebooked the same room for the 3 night New Year package for this year and our daughters in laws are also hoping to get booked in so they can join us.
Thank you again to Tony, Sally and their team for a wonderful stay.
I’m not an enthusiastic fan but I couldn’t have asked for a better place to watch. We both enjoyed an excellent meal before kick off in friendly surroundings with mainly locals who chatted to us and clearly held the owners and the restaurant in high regard. Once we had finished our meal, there was a big screen and many more people from the village came in.
I hasten to add that had you not wanted to watch, there were other quieter rooms.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and had we not been returning home, would have returned for another meal and the final.
Next time we are in the area, we will definitely return!
"Check which bedroom you will be allocated, all pretty dated but some better than others. Don’t let them put you in room 12 - it’s horrible!"Read full review
