We stayed for two nights at the Four Horseshoes. Being 400 years old, it is full of low beams, so if like me you are tall get used to 'ducking' or ouch! The whole place has a real character and family feel about it. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Our room was of modest size, with sloping ceilings under the thatched roof, with a adequate en-suite bathroom, with a rather small shower. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean, and perfectly adequate for a short stay.

The bed was comfortable, and even though we were at the front of the building, road noise not much of a problem.

We had two dinners during our stay. This is good 'pub' grub, served in decent sized portions. Quality and prestation varied a little, depending on the menu item. Overall not the best pub grub we have ever had, but pretty good all round. The chef was quite flexible and was willing to modify the menu items to suit individual requirements.

The bar has a good selection of beers and wine at sensible prices; table service only during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Breakfast is outstanding, the best English breakfast we have had for a very long time. There is no continental breakfast choice, it's good old fashioned English breakfast cooked to order and well presented.

Overall I thought that the Four Horseshoes was a little expensive compared with other similar venues, in fact the pricing is very similar to many rather nice country house and coastal hotels which have more facilities. However we liked the experience and will be visiting again.

The free Wi-Fi is rather poor, and it can be hard to get a connection depending where you are in the hotel. Hotel blames the rural location, which is probably a fair point. Mobile phone coverage is also very poor in this location.

I stayed for five nights on business. TL:DR is this is an excellent pub with comfy accommodation and welcoming staff which I would recommend without hesitation.

I stayed in room 21 which was large and had a very comfortable bed. Despite lockdown restrictions, every effort was made to make my stay comfortable and Tom and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and eager to help.

The pub is strictly abiding by the COVID-19 restrictions and has many hand gel dispensers and all the tables were sanitised between customers. The staff appear well briefed with the latest guidelines. This made me feel safe and allowed me to relax and enjoy the stay (as much as a business trip allows!)

The food was uniformly excellent. Nothing fancy, but there is a good selection of dishes to choose from. It’s good solid food with generous portions, which was well cooked. Particular highlights was the Sunday Roast (super slow cooked pork) and the cooked breakfast (delicious sausages!). The home made pudding (lemon crunch) I tried (I only had room for pudding on one night) was excellent. As a result of the catering I’m a couple of pounds heavier than before!

Aspall cider on tap with a selection of tasty local beers were on offer. I very much enjoyed the “old man of the sea” porter.

I would not hesitate in recommending this as a place to stay and eat, and will be returning whenever the opportunity arises.

We eat here quite often and recently decided to go for Sunday Lunch. Shown to our table and had to wait a while for our drinks order but maybe they were extra busy? We ordered our meal a bit later and when it arrived it was nice to see the gravy in its own little jug as some of us like to put the gravy on ourselves so far so good. Alas and this is not just the Four Horseshoes but many pubs that I have eaten in the knives are blunt and I could not cut into my roast spuds which were barely roasted anyway and even my Yorkshire pudding which I had to pull apart. Luckily the meat must have been the end of the joint because although it was very tender it came up in chunks not slices . Someone on another table must have finished their meal because they had a toddler with them that had got bored and proceeded to run around and scream spoiling a nice quiet pubs peace. Why do people take toddlers to pubs and then think that we all are prepared to put up with their screaming . I love kids but do not want to put up with them running around spoiling my meal. We will give the Sunday lunch a rest for a while and visit at other times.

Hi Chatty Harry, I'm sorry to hear that it was a bit of a mixed bag on your last visit to us, please do let us know when you are with us if there is something that would make your visit more comfortable, we have steak knives available should you like a sharper knife. We are family friendly restaurant and do ask that, especially in these difficult times, everyone remains at the table as much as possible to avoid unnecessary moving around. Sometimes this can be difficult with a restless little one. We would have happily found you another table in a quieter area had you only asked, so please I reiterate, there is little I can do about these things on TripAdvisor but on the day I can, PLEASE JUST ASK, we're happy to help! I hope we'll see you again soon, and please do let us know if we can make your next visit more comfortable.

I think the recent review expressing a preference for a Weatherspoons & saying staff were rude, says more about the reviewer than this beautiful hostelry which, in my humble opinion, is in a far different class. In fact that review is so inaccurate I think it must either be false or the author has got the wrong place! Even during the current social isolating, staff at The Horseshoes have gone out of their way to help people. They have put together food boxes, butchers' boxes, dry goods, etc. to help locals who are having difficulty getting out and/or getting home deliveries; all of which can be delivered to your door. They are also providing a takeaway menu which is to their usual high standard and exceptional value. This place has been our 'Local' for many years and although I miss not being able to frequent the inside due to the current restrictions, I still always get a warm welcome when ordering & collecting takeaways. I can't wait for The Four Horshoes to reopen fully.

Clean room, comfortable bed, floor creaked a bit but it is a very old building.
Beers good, cider good. Food from the specials board good (i'd rather have chips than fries) to excellent. Staff were ALL very friendly and helpful, as were the locals.
Breakfast was good. The small English breakfast was pretty big but half the size of the big one. The eggs were delicious.
The ladies toilet needs a new hand drier (or better still, paper towels).
The function we attended had good food and plenty for vegetarians/vegans/gluten free. The staff helping at the function were diligent , hard working and friendly. They kept things tidy, brought drinks and food if needed.

We booked a 5-night stay at The Four Horseshoes this week as a base to explore Norfolk during a short break. We have stayed here a few times previously over-night and have returned again because of the warmest of welcomes received and atmosphere from the lovely staff.

Our evening meals and breakfasts were superb.

Thank you specifically to Karen, Terri and Chef, but to all of the staff as well for making our stay special.

Ideally based for days out to the coast or local Woodland Walks with our dog, and of the many Market Towns and attractions.

We will definitely make a return date to stay with you in the future.

The Four Horseshoes is a picturesque pub, in a lovely little village location, not far off the A140.
It has a car park opposite, plenty big enough to cope with a large number of cars and the inside of the pub is deceptively large too, with tables set out leaving plenty of room to manoeuvre.

I had a steak pie with veg and my partner chose the turkey roast both of which were good sized portions and very tasty.

We managed to summon up room for pudding and we both picked the lemon / lime cheesecake which was very tasty.

Friendly staff, good service and we were thanked for our custom and tip.

All in all very good and will return, just wish it was a bit closer to home.

We are just back from a weekend camping in Thornham Magna, the highlight of which was Saturday lunch at the Four Horseshoes. These are such challenging times for pubs and restaurants, and implementing safe distancing regulations while still allowing guests to have an enjoyable and relaxed dining experience is tricky - The Four Horseshoes team did it with aplomb, allowing us to have a wonderful lunch. The food itself was great, but we were more struck by the incredibly friendly and helpful service - nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to the whole team - we will be back as soon as we can.

I visited here at the end of August with my family.
Having driven past the pub previously, I was keen to visit as it’s such a pretty location and looked like a great character filled, traditional old pub.
We weren’t disappointed as the pub itself is really very pretty inside. The beams are very low so watch out if you’re on the taller side!
We were served by different staff during our visit but all were very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and make sure we had everything.
We enjoyed a really lovely meal with our children and will definitely visit again.
Thank you!

My wife and I went to the four horseshoes as a treat during our weeks holiday nearby. We both had the steak and chips. The steak was so tender we did not need the steak knife provided. despite being quiet (due to covid) the atmosphere was nice and the staff really good and attentive. In fact we went back for another meal two days later as other things on the menu looked really good. Worth a visit
